Where Have You Gone,Bob Jenkens?

Submitted by Past AARWBA PresidentRoss R. Olney

Yeah, sometimes you hear it back east occasionally, butnot from real radio and TV racing announcers. Not inthis country. Across the ocean it is quite common, butnot here. Now, from all appearances last year and againthis year in Indy car racing, this kind of announcing isaccepted, But, hey, this is America. We don’t talk thatway. Bob Jenkins would never have talked that silly way. What I mean is, how can you possibly mispronounceOriol Servia’s name, for just one example of many? Hisname is not “Servier.” I have friends who drive Hondas. They even use Hondas inIndy car racing. They are not“Honders.”It really sounds dumb, herein America, for Indy car rac-ing announcers to consis-tently mispronounce words. What ever happened to themarvelous grammar andperfect pronunciation andsmooth voice of Bob Jenkinsin big time auto racing? Hewas a real racing announcer.

Even though they do it all thetime over in Formula One, you never heard Bob callFelipe Massa “Masser.” We just don’t say it that way.But apparently the people who hire announcers for Indycar races think that talking this way makes our racingbetter, or more sophisticated, or more like F/1, or moreexciting, or more something or other.I think his name is Leigh Diffey, and maybe he reallytalks this way, or maybe they told him to talk this way,but the name is Montoya, not “Montoyer,” it is car not“cah” and Power, not “Powah” and hear, not “Heeyah, and on and on. It is warm up, not “wahmup,” and year, not “yeeah.” It is amazing, not “ameyezing.” It should beeasy. For we Americans, who think our racing is the best inthe world, couldn’t they just ask the announcers to pro-nounce words like we use them here in America? LikeBob used to do?Or best of all, bring Bob Jenkins back. Now there was a racing announcer.

Cathy Telaneus Awarded the Grand Prix‘Spirit’ Award at Long Beach.

Cathy Telaneus has volunteered in the Long BeachPress Room on Grand Prix weekend for 40 years. The award is given annually by the Long BeachPress-Telegram to someone for outstanding ser-vice to the Grand Prix. It is named after AARWBAmember Allen Wolfe, the Press-Telegram’s legend-ary auto racing writer who covered the Grand Prixfrom the first race in 1975 to 1998. He died oneweek before the 1999 race.

The Award is especially personal for Telaneus.“I’m honored to receive this award because it’s partof Allen. He was a talented writer and gentlemanthat I had the pleasure of knowing.”

Telaneus, a race fan since her youth, is a lifetimemember of the nonprofit Committee of 300, avolunteer group formed in 1975 that supports theToyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and serves atcommunity events.

Cathy and another Committee 300 member, BudEhiers, are the smiling faces that you see as youenter the Deadline Media Center. Their table is re-splendent with candy for the media all weekend.

Pirelli World Challenge 25th AnniversaryPosters by Hector Cademartori

Professional artist and AARWBA member Hector Cadermartoricreated a beautiful poster commemorating the 25th anniversaryof the World Challenge road racing series. He sent us thesephotos and some background information.

“I worked with Pirelli in the past and when it was time to cele-brate the 25th anniversary of the World Challenge series, RafaelNavarro, head of Communications and Motorsports for Pirellicontacted me. It was a great project. I've been a great fan ofWorld Challenge so I enjoyed every minute of it.

The collage displays images of the early champions such asR.K. Smith and his Dieline Corvette from 1990, the first year ofthe series. Also, Patrick Long (Porsche) who won the GT cham-pionship in 2011, the first year Pirelli served as title sponsor,Galati (Audi), Archer and his Viper and, of course, Peter Cun-ningham and his RealTime Acura. Peter is arguably the mostsuccessful driver in this series with seven championships, I be-lieve.

The rest are the 2013 champions in the four classes plus JamesSofronas' GMG AudiR8, one of the veterans of WC with morethan 150 starts and Randy Pobst and the K-Pack Volvo S60.My only regret is that I had to leave out of the image so manygreat drivers and teams, but for obvious reasons I had to makea selection.

The original was unveiled during the drivers autograph session on Sat-urday and I'm in the photo with Scott Bove, World Challenge Presidentand CEO (left) and Pirelli's Rafael Navarro (Right).

The series also produced posters based on the original painting andthe fans lined up to get their poster signed by the drivers.

Angela Savage To Indy Connection

Photographer member Dave Simpkins read theMarch newsletter about Angela Savage wanting togo to the Indy 500 this year. Dave went to highschool with Swede, and he connected with PaulPowell. Here is his recent letter.

“Thank you so very much for your wonderfulhelpful attitude and for sending Paul Powell’s

address.

“Through a close friend I have made contactwith Angela Savage who lives in Nevada. She

so much wanted to know about her dad’syounger days. I just mailed a couple of race

photos and photos from our high schoolannuals of her dad on campus, in a football

uniform, a band concert, etc.

“I also sent a support check and notes about herdad and grandmother. All of this because of thefabulous AARWBA newsletter article and nowseveral people know of a baby from our youth

and had no contact, but now we do. “
