Carl Koch’s belief that he was “just a steward of the finances given by God to

use on His behalf” inspired the commitment he and his wife, Paula, made to

founding the Koch Foundation in 1979. The Foundation’s goals are to strengthen

and to propagate the Roman Catholic faith by providing grant support for a

wide variety of evangelization efforts. In considering applications, major

emphasis is placed on sound but financially needy evangelical programs.

The Koch Foundation is international in scope with no geographical preference.

The Koch Foundation joins with the Holy Father in celebrating 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life! During this special year, we are invited to learn more about the men and women who have dedicated their lives to Christ. We are given an opportunity to journey with our religious brothers and sisters as they reflect on their particular charisms, challenges they face as they live their ministries and as

they answer the Call to live a consecrated life.

Many of us have benefitted directly from the hard work and endless love our religious brothers and sisters give to their missions. We may have been treated in a Catholic hospital, attended Catholic school, received care in one of the many nursing care facilities, or celebrated the sacraments all because of the religious

who have spent their lives serving others.

Today, in many parts of the world, religious are the only faces of the Catholic Church. They live among the less fortunate, providing care and dedication through their ministries. They often face challenges and hardships and for a few, give the ultimate sacrifice, to ensure the Word of God is heard. In other areas they are the only hope for food, education, or healthcare to the poor or those shunned by society. As St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” The religious have taken St. Francis’ words to heart by

teaching the gospel daily and living their lives following in Christ’s footsteps.

Nuns, sisters, brothers, and priests in contemplative communities, apostolic

institutes, and religious orders are a gift to all of us. We are still benefitting from

many new religious orders that educated us, provided healthcare or guided our

spiritual life. At the heart of all this are the lives of women and men who have

given themselves to the Lord. They have chosen to know, love and serve Him.

Through their service, they bring hope and joy of the Catholic faith to all.

In dedicating the year 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life, His Holiness Pope Francis stated that there was a great need for the presence, strength, and commitment of men and women religious in order for the Good News to continue to spread. This year we celebrate the men and women who have embraced an extraordinary calling, serving in a spirit of poverty, not for personal gain, but freely for the sake of the proclamation of the Gospel. Those who consecrate their lives to the Church have been integral throughout the history of Catholicism—teaching, healing, consoling, nurturing, becoming for us in so many ways the hands

and heart and voice of Christ.

To commemorate the Holy Father’s proclamation, many religious institutes are holding special events to help laity learn what it means to live a Consecrated Life. These events are intended to increase awareness of the charisms which guide their ministries and to perhaps offer a glimpse into the lives of those who have chosen to live each day by the lessons of Christ, and who show us by example that serving

others is the greatest demonstration of selfless love.

In the past few years there has been a resurgence of vocations, as new generations of young adults answer His call to lead a religious life; and they have brought with them a renewed passion for evangelizing and spreading the joy of living the Gospel. This growth has allowed the message of His love to be carried to even the most isolated corners of our world, where entire communities have been brought into communion with the Church by receiving the gift of the Sacraments. Celebrating the Sacraments together helps us to remember the past with gratitude,

to embrace the future with hope, and to live in the present with passion.

May all those men and women who have dedicated themselves to the religious life be blessed as they continue to serve the Lord and may we continue to include them in our lives as examples of our Faith. Rejoice and be glad, for their reward will be

great in Heaven!

Religious men and women do the great work of evangelizing to the ends of the world in a spirit of humility rather than an attitude of conquering. They spread the Word of God as humble servants of the Lord, knowledgeable of the faith and

strong in their commitment to Christ.

The Koch Foundation funds Direct Evangelization programs and religious activities that directly support strengthen, and spread the Catholic proclamation of Christ’s

Gospel.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Religious men and women live a life of poverty and rely on God’s province. They serve the poor and those forgotten by society. Many are located in remote, hostile

areas or in slums wherever they have felt a calling, teaching the Word of God.

The Koch Foundation funds the Preparation of Evangelists formation programs and religious activities that prepare individuals and groups to proclaim the Good News

of salvation through the Catholic faith.

Many times Catholic schools are the only symbol of a Catholic presence in the area, and provide not only an education for the local children, but their families as well. Religious men and women throughout the world administer in Catholic School, teaching religious education and conducting spiritual counseling. It is due to their dedication that many children worldwide receive not only a good education but

an introduction into the Catholic faith.

The Koch Foundation provides support to resource poor areas where Catholic Schools are the only means of evangelization. The Foundation also funds

innovative programs that have the potential for providing future Church leaders.

The Church is the voice of the poor, a place to find peace with God. It is often the shelter for not only the celebration of liturgical activities but also religious

education and pastoral meetings. In church, we are all united as children of God.

In many areas, the church is the main gathering place and offers opportunities to local people who may be seeking safety, or to learn more about the Catholic

faith. For some it is a beacon of hope and proof that they are loved.

The Koch Foundation provides support for the construction, repair, and renovation

of religious structures in the United States, its territories, and Haiti.

The Foundation innvests in various investment seccurities. Investment securities aare exposed to various risks such as interrest rate, market, and credit rissks. (11) Fair Value MMeasurements:

The fair value meaasurement accounting literature pprovides the framework for meaasuring fair value. Thatframework providees a fair value hierarchy that pprioritizes the inputs to valuatioon techniques used to measure fair value.. The hierarchy gives the highestt priority to unadjusted quoted prices in active markets for identical assetss or liabilities (Level 1 measuremments) and the lowest priority tto unobservable inputs (Level 3 measuremments). The three levels of the fairr value hierarchy are described bbelow:

l 1 h l i h d lLevel 1 – IInputs to the valuation methodoloogy are u dj d d i f id i lnadjusted quoted pricess for identical assets orliabilities in active markets that the Founddation has the ability to access aas of the measurement date.

Level 2 – IInputs to the valuation methodoloogy include: (1) quoted market pprices for similar assetsor liabilitiees in active markets, (2) quotedd prices for identical or similar assets or liabilities in inactive maarkets, (3) inputs other than quooted prices that are observable foor the asset or liability, and (4) inpputs that are derived principallyy from or corroborated by obserrvable market data by correlation or other means. If the asset or lliability has a specified (contractual) term, the Level 2 input must be observable for substantially tthe full term of the asset or liabillity.

L l 3 II t t th l ti th d llLevel 3 – IInputs to the valuation methodollogy are u b bl d i iffi t t th f i lnobservable and signifficant to the fair value measuremeent. Unobservable inputs are thhose that reflect the Foundatioon’s own assumptions ffabout the aassumptions that market participaants would use in pricing the assset developed based on the best innformation available. These typpes of amounts due from externnally managed private equity inveestments are determined based onn information provided by the prrivate equity firm.

MARCH 31, 2015 AND 2014

(11) Fair Value MMeasurements: (Continued)

The asset’s fair vallue measurement level within thhe fair value hierarchy is based on the lowest level of any input that is significant to the fair value measuurement. Valuation techniques uused need to maximize the use of observabble inputs and minimize the use oof unobservable inputs.

Following is a desccription of the valuation methoddog p logies used for assets measureed at fair value. Therg e have been no changges to the methodologies used at March 31, 2015 and 2014.

Common sttock and exchange-traded funds – Valued at quoted market pricees.

Private equuity investments – Valued at thee net asset value of the units heldd by the Foundation at year end, aas reported by the investment mannager.

Since the private equity investments are valuedd utilizing unobservable inputss, and do not permit redemption at the mmeasurement date, such investmments are classified within Levell 3. These investments are presented in thhe accompanying financial stateements at fair value, as determinned by the investment manager. The invvestment manager’s determinatiion of fair value is based upoon the best availableinformation providded by the underlying limited paartnership the private equity funnds invest in and mayincorporate managgement assumptions and best eestimates after considering a vaariety of internal and external factors.

The general partneers of the underlying investmentt partnerships generally value thheir investments at fair value. Securities wwith no readily available market aare generally valued according too the market approach, which attempts too apply a fair value standard by referring to meaningful thiird-party transactions, comparable public market valuations and/or the iincome approach. Considerationn is also given to thefinancial conditionn and operating results of the isssuer, the amount that the investtment partnerships can reasonably expect to realize upon the sale of the securities, and any other factorrs deemed relevant. Asecurity can be carrried at acquisition price (cost) iif little has changed since the innitial investment of thecompany and acquuisition price is most representaative of fair value. Securities with a readily availablemarket (listed on aa securities exchange or traded in the over-the-counter market)) are valued at quotedmarket prices or at an appropriate discount from such price if marketability of the securities is restricted.

Investments, other than the underlying diversified iinvestment partnerships, for whicch price quotations are not readily availabble, shall be valued at fair vallue as determined by the Geneeral Partner. For such investments, managgement applies comparable transsaction multiples and/or comparable trading multiples, where such comparrable multiples are available andd appropriate, and/or a discountted cash flow analysis, where appropriate,, to estimate fair value. The GGeneral Partner establishes valluation processes andprocedures to ensurre that the valuation techniques ffor investments are fair, consisteent, and verifiable. The General Partner’s vvaluations are reviewed by the innvestment manager’s valuation ggovernance process on a quarterly basis wwhich includes the investment coommittee. The investment commmittee is comprised of the investment mannager’s management and compliaance members.

The preceding methhods described may produce a ffair value calculation that may nnot be indicative of netrealizable value orr reflective of future fair values. Furthermore, although the Foundation believes itsvaluation methods are appropriate and consistentt with other market participantss, the use of different methodologies or aassumptions to determine the faiir value of certain financial instrruments could result in a different fair valuue measurement at the reporting ddate.
