Opening Access to Works in the Public Domain at Yale University John ffrench – Yale University Art Gallery – AAM, Minneapolis MN 2012

description

In May 2011, Yale announced a groundbreaking new policy on open access to digital representations of works in the public domain. Yale’s policy represents a departure from preceding efforts in that no license is required for, nor any limitations imposed upon, the use of digital images of works in the public domain.  This talk will briefly examine how Yale arrived at the current policy, including the institutional climate, the collaboration between collections across the University - from museum to library and archive collections - that gave rise to the policy, as well as the advantages and challenges of implementing the policy since its inception.

What is Yale University’s Open Access Policy?

• General Principle:

The preservation, transmission, and advancement of knowledge in the digital age are promoted by the creative use and reuse of digitized content for research, teaching, learning, and creative activities. The goal of digitization is to enhance access to the collections in Yale’s museums, archives, and libraries for students, faculty, and the world. To this end, Yale will make digital copies of unrestricted public domain collections available for use without limitations through the University’s electronic interfaces.
