PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

By Bill O'Connell

$485.00, that's right folks, $485.00 is what wegot at this year's auction! That is nothing short ofamazing! At the January meeting Craig Rosenfeldmade a motion that this year's profit would bedonated to a charity. The motion was passed and atthe Feb exec meeting St. Christopher's Hospital inPhiladelphia was chosen as the benefactor, i'm surethey will be more than pleased. The chiefauctioneer, Bob Russo, outdid himself this year. Wehad a ton of stuff donated by the members rangingfrom used and abused to new and expensive. Someof our advertisers donated some pretty nifty itemsas well, like books, oil. upholstery repair, and bodyparts. The crowd was held spellbound for over anhour while Bob pulled his normal antics, like sellingmy old 944 steering wheel to Don Cox' son thenpulling off the horn button and selling thatseparately to someone else. Bob also brought some"stuff from Al's 962 - always a crowd pleaser. Hemanaged to get a fair buck for things like bolts, plexiglas windows, and suspension parts. All in all Ithink everyone had a good time, especially JanetWeger who opened up the bid for a rusty, dented, spider infested piece of a '67 911 (which is sold andre-sold every year for 25<t or 50<t) for $5.00 - Bobwas so astounded that he immediately declared herthe winner, and went on to the next item. Again, thanks to everyone that donated items, and thosethat donated money and lugged things home -remember though, don't throw that stuff away, much of it has history and is expected back for nextyear's event!

The year continues to shape up. We are going tohave a bunch of events for ail of you to choosefrom, like the famous Louie, Louie parade inPhiladelphia, 4 (or maybe 5) track events, anautoaoss series with spedal categories for novices,an art show/wine tasting/spring social, a seriousconcours perhaps with a parade, etc. etc. In short, there should be something for everyone to attend.

I hope to see a good turnout for the Marchmeeting with Bob Carlson. See you there, right?

"STEP BY STEP" THE FINAL CHAPTER?By AI Anderson

For those of you who have been following myarticles on "Step by Step", project 944, the sagacontinues. This past year has been spent developingthe final step, a GT-Z SCCA race car. I had run manySolo I time trials, and still hold the record for C-improved. while still working my way towards myfinal level with the same car, an SCCA license. Boththe car, and driver have progressed "step by step".It has taken 5 years to prepare both financially andmentally to take that step Into racing.

Now, back to the car...my 944 was furtherstripped of extraweight, short ofa fiberglass body. Iam not running an expensive tube chassis, like DaveFinch's GT-2 national car (too expensive)! Mypresent goal is to run regional competition. I doknow my limits! To run GT-Z you have to outfit thecar and driver with full safisty equipment; a full rollcage, fuel cell, external ignition shut off, and muchmore. At this time I would like to thank PaulJohnston at Johnston Enterprises for all the late nightpreparation of my car. Paul did the fabrication work,of things like fuel cell installation, scatter shield, andmuch aluminum work. Remember, the trick is to belite. Z180 pounds to be exact.

Now the car goes a few blocks away to WestChester Foreign Car Service, for Dave to work hismagic on suspension, "stock" motor, and installationof on-board fire ^stem, and more. Ifyou Intend togo racing, be prepared to spend many nightsworking well beyond midnight In car preparation.

not to mention dollars, dollars, and more dollars. Both Dave and Paul treated me kindly In the latterdepartment. Another thing I will mention is my caris in a constant state of development, bothmechanically and cosmetically. I hold to the theorythat a Ceir can look good, as well as run and handlewell.

With car and driver ready, we head for SummitPoint, wth borrowed van, trailer, and crew...thanksCraig. We checked in and then headed for theFriday night classroom session and written test onthe SCCA Bible, the GCR's. Saturday morning, upbright and early and head to the track. I felt like aproud peacock towing my car through the paddockarea. We unloaded the Ccir and gear and joined in onthe drivers' meeting, just like PCA track events. Wewere told we would be watched very carefully allweekend and graded on our on and off trackbehavior. As things turned out, the weekend wentrather well. Thanks to Dave and his past experiencewith team McLaren, my car was the best handlingcar at the school. I was able to hold my own withthe other race cars, even though my engine wasstock. We passed in all the corners, gave up a littleon the straights, but all in all, the car really"worked".

Practice and qualifying was a lot of work, sortingout mental mistakes, and pushing the car to its

Page 9: aa^HN>B6aas - Porsche Club of America › pdf › derGasser › 80s › 1988 › 1988-03.pdfRIESENTOTER REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA Dougherty Automotive 61 4 Westtown Road West

limits, i rein l!33 to qualiiy 6th on the grid of 32 cars.GT-l, 2, and 3 run together in SCCA. Ii33 Is mypersonal best, but not good enough to becompetitive next year, (more changes In weight, slicks, and more money) remember 1 eim running, and will continue to run, a rather stock engine nextyear! Note...! was the only GT car at the schoolrunning shaved street tires.

The moment of truth, the mini-race Sundayafternoon. They gave us 2 practice starts and calledus into the tin shed for another drivers' meeting. They told us to be aggressive but not to "tradepaint". Remember we are being graded on ourperformance, if you are not aggressive or cause aproblem on the track, you don't get a license. Alldrivers are required to do at least 2 schools, unlessyou apply for a waiver, in which case they watchyou like a hawk, (i applied for a waiver.) 1 felt mypast experience with PG\ track events and timetrials would be enough to get me my license in 1school...Back to the track, the warm-up lap. 1 hadnoticed a lot of oil dry on the track in the chute froma car blowing its motor in the previous race, thisworked to my advantage. While the other driverswere working out the jitters (I knew they weregoing to take the chute as fast as they could) 1planned my passing off the oil line on the first lap...The green flag came out, 32 cars all storming intoturn 1 flat out. i moved inside and got a good linethrough turn 1 and 2 passing 3 cars. Then it

happend, my motor sputtered, I lost a position. Upthe short straight and through wagon bend. 1 tookthe chute as fast as I could, off line, avoiding the oil,and passed 2 more cars, while the l«ist Gr-2 car inmy class (Don Webb's 914-6) spun in the oil. 1tookthe left hcinder at the bottom of the chute into thecarosel behind the GT-l Camaro that was on thepole. I was on his bumper int othe esses, and then ithappened. My motor sputtered again, and again. My mirrors instantly filled with cars breathing on myrear bumper while I cocisted through turn eight.Panic struck, I pulled off line cind limped up the hillthrough 9 and into the pits. This was "the PITS".Knowing we were being watched very carefully onour sense of not causing an incident on the track, ifelt discression is the better part of valor. 1watchedthe rest of the race from the sidelines. The GT-lCamaro went on to win the race.

It turned out I burned up one of the dual fuelpumps I'm running, but as they say "that's racing." idid get my SCCA license, so all was not lost. Nomore schools, and off to a season of SCCA regionalracing next year. Most of this was made possiblethrough all the valuable track time cind excellentinstruction gained through our PCA track events.Keep up the good work instructors.

AUTOCROSS '88

By Betsi Leidy

With the arrival of the new year, the mantle ofleadership within Riesentoter has again changed, bringing you none other than me as your autocrosschairperson. For those of you who may not knowwho "me" is, I'm Betsi March Leidy, a PCA memberfor about 4 years. I've been an avid autocrossersince even before acquiring my 911, so I feel verystrongly about maintaining an active autocrossprogram within my club (if you don't believe me.Just ask Al Anderson about my kitchen counter). Ihope you v\dll support what I anticipate will be anexciting autocross season.

I want to thank Jim and Lisa Confer for anexcellent Job as last year's autocross chairpersons. They gave autocrossing a much needed shot in thearm and attracted record numbers of drivers to the

events. I hope I can do as well. This year, i plan tostart the season with our traditional autocrossschool. In Riesentoter, we have some incrediblygood drivers cind the school is a not-to-be missedopportunity to learn from these individuals how tomake your Porsche really perform. Once you've alllearned how to autocross, I want to follow theschool with 4 more autoaosses in a championshipseries to encourage repeat attendence. Hopefully Ican find a sponsor for the series (anyoneinterested?) and award overall trophies at the endof the season in addition to the Broken OankshaftAward. I'm also going to separate the novice andexperienced drivers so that newcomers can have ashot at the event and championship trophies. Lastbut not least will be the annual Porsche/CorvetteChallenge, where we show the Chevy owners howto drive. Due to populeir request, this event will bescheduled before the winter snows set in!

These ideas are in the planning stages, so if youhave comments/suggestions, I'll be glad to listen(855-0360). The program will only be as good asyou make it with your partidpation.

Watch future Der Gassers and mailings for datesand details on the Riesentoter autoaoss program asthey become finalized. In the meantime, mark yourcalenders for the following autocross dates:

As a newcomer to the Porsche world, I canobserve the car, the people who own them, and theactivities both engage in with more detachmentthan the long time Porsche devotee. Let me sharesome observations by lightheartedly comparingimpressions of my first few Riesentoter activitieswith Corvette activities. (I am a long time fan ofeciriy and mid-year Corvettes.)

The Beer Factor. Porsche owners like to drink a

beer or two when they get together. Corvetteowners get together so that they can drink beer.

The Conversation Factor. Porsche owners lovetheir cars and their families, business, etc. Theyenjoy discussing all subjects, and not confining theconversation to cars and car events. Corvette

owners talk about cars, car shows, and beer.

The Grease Factor. No one needs 1/8 inch ofgrease buried under every finger nail to enjoy aPorsche. Many owners know their cars and how todrive them, without the least concern that theydon't know how to drop the engine or to performsome other mechanical gymnastics. Corvetteowners, on the other hand, relish telling how theybust a gut performing a task such as pulling the rearwheel bearings. They show a fair amount of greaseunder their nails.

The Original Factor. Corvette owners clamor fororiginality on something piddling like the chalkmarks on the frame. Moreover, these are peopledriving their cars daily, not pure concoursenthusiasts. Woe is the owner who has an incorrectmanifold bolt! Even counterfeit engine numbermanufacturing systems have developed , so that areplacement engine block can be made the "original"block. 1 don't know yet how fus^ Porsche ownersare about the originality of every nut and bolt. Isense they would generally prefer a beautifullooking and correctly equiped car over a virgin carthat Is worn and tired.

The Performance Factor. Porsche owners speak ofhow their cars performed in an event. Corvetteowners speak of how they performed in an event.Porsche owners enjoy autocrossing, rallying, andhigh speed track driving. Corvette owners enjoylaying rubber, and seeing how quickly a car movesfrom standstill to 60 MPH.

Corvettes excite many people—especially whenthey dip their toe into all those foot pounds oftorque or they speak of the history of America's onlytrue spor ts car. However, the above factorscomparing Corvettes and Porsches, and theirrespective owners, have contributed to mydisinterest in Corvette related activities, in contrast,Riesentoter activities observed so suggest thatPorschin' will be a lot of fun!

SEAT BELTS

By Bob Patten

All new Porsches come factory equipped withthree-point inertia reei seat belts, as they have since1968. These belts provide adequate protectionunder normal circumstances, but don't really holdthe driver in position under hard driving.

To better hold the driver down in the seat, a sbc-point harness is needed. These are especially usefulat autocrosses or track events. The 3-inch lap beltholds you to the seat, while the two shoulder beltskeep you from moving from side to side. Thesubmarine belt is not there to keep you from"submarining" or sliding under the lap belt (thatwould be impossible while seated in an uprightposition), but is there to keep the lap belt fromriding up above the hips.

A properly fitted lap belt or three-point inertiareel belt alone shouldn't cause problems. But if asix-point heirness is worn without the submarinebelt, the shoulder straps will bull up the lap belt. This is because the shoulder belts on a six-point

harness attach to the center of the lap belt, wliilethe shoulder belt on a three-point heirness attachesat an end mounting point. The hipbone canwlthsteind quite a loading from a seat belt but thedriver cind passenger are subject to internal injuriesif the seat belt is lifted over the flips.

in the early 911 's and 912's befbre the tfiree-pointinertia reel belt was introduced, there was a pair ofseat belts installed. For some unknown reason,Porsche installed the belt mounting points way toohigh. These belts could actually cause severeinternal injuries if worn during an accident. Therefore, anyone with an early 911 or 912 isstrongly advised to relocate the seat belt mountingpoints to the floor of the vehicle, just befiind thefront seat. If you have <iny doubt where the newmounting points should be located, ask someone ata tech session or at any other event.

LIFE DURING THE DEAD MONTHSBy Jim Confer

December, January, and February can be the mostdepressing months of the year. The car is saltedaway for the duration and the female tenant at myplace expects me to do house projects. I find It's agood time for a little technical research followed bya few car projects. Time, money, and that Marchjourney to Lime Rock are the limiting factors.

After I target the project, I need to acquire thenecessary parts. Then I research and plan theactivities required with since it always seems totake two, four, or six times as long as 1 think itshould. The research activity generally results in thepurchase of more tools. Buying tools is one of thepleasures of working on you Ccir because no matterhow meiny you own there eire always a few moreyou need.

I'm a firm believer in the clean start approach. Thebasement, garage, toolboxes, and car must start theproject In a clean and well organized manner. Afterthat, things go down hill fast which oftennecessitates a mid-project re-organization (just likeat the office).

The learning curve is really a staircase with littleor no progress followed by a sudden improvementin methodology that moves things ahead quickly tothe next roadblock. I also find myself distracted as Iexamine other unrelated components of the car. Ican't really justify the time and cost to do it myselfbut I find it rewarding.

I do have a helper, my dog Louie, he'll spendhours under the car and following me in my neverending search for tools. Since he's a Lab you wouldthink I could teach him to retrieve them, but Ihaven't had any luck (...yet).

I sometimes venture into the house to search for

food even though this is a risky activity. If I'm notcareful, I hear voices mumbling something aboutfloor tile installation or the Honda's squeaky doors. Then I know it's time to crank-up the space heateranother notch and hurry back to the peace andsolitude of the Porsche's underbelly with my palLouie.

After all, that Lime Rock trip is almost here.Maybe I should pay somebody to install that tile. No, I'll have time any day now...

RIESENTOTER SOONERS

I think a few of you must be from Oklahoma.Several Pocono event applications arrived in mymailbox PRIOR to the event open date. The reasonwe have an entry date is to give everyone equalaccess to the event. Early entries must be returnedand the resulting mail delays could cause the entryto miss the opening date. Please check the entrydate before mailing your entry.
