This is expected to pre- vent the issuance of multi- ple licences, means usual- ly adopted to beat the su- spension of licence for traffic/criminal offences or for fake identity. The Aadhaar number’s bio- metrics details will help prevent such practices and the new regime should kick off from October, offi- cial sources said. The road transport mi- nistry has started work to roll out the measure by in- corporating the necessary changes to use Aadhaar. Since issuance of a DL is a state subject, the ministry will urge states to adopt this “safe system”, which will almost end the practi- ce of people getting multi- ple licences from different regional transport offices (RTOs) in different states. Since it is not too diffi- cult to get such multiple li- cences at present, even the confiscation of a DL by po- lice doesn’t work as a de- terrent. “Aadhaar will be a sing- le document which will be enough to establish the identity of the applicant. If anyone does not have it, then s/he has to submit several other documents. We are making the neces- sary changes and incorpo- rating provisions to enab- le RTOs to record these de- tails. “All RTOs will have ac- cess to the central databa- se of DLs (known as Sarat- hi) to check whether the applicant has got any other DL issued anywhere in the country,” a source said.
