New Delhi: In a move tocheck multiple driving li-cences under one name, the Centre will ask statesto make Aadhaar identifi-cation necessary for a newlicence as well as for thoseseeking renewal.
This is expected to pre-vent the issuance of multi-ple licences, means usual-ly adopted to beat the su-spension of licence fortraffic/criminal offencesor for fake identity. TheAadhaar number’s bio-metrics details will helpprevent such practices andthe new regime shouldkick off from October, offi-cial sources said.
The road transport mi-nistry has started work toroll out the measure by in-corporating the necessarychanges to use Aadhaar.Since issuance of a DL is astate subject, the ministrywill urge states to adoptthis “safe system”, whichwill almost end the practi-ce of people getting multi-ple licences from differentregional transport offices(RTOs) in different states.
Since it is not too diffi-cult to get such multiple li-cences at present, even theconfiscation of a DL by po-
lice doesn’t work as a de-terrent.
“Aadhaar will be a sing-le document which will beenough to establish theidentity of the applicant. Ifanyone does not have it,then s/he has to submit several other documents. We are making the neces-sary changes and incorpo-rating provisions to enab-le RTOs to record these de-tails.
“All RTOs will have ac-cess to the central databa-se of DLs (known as Sarat-hi) to check whether theapplicant has got anyother DL issued anywherein the country,” a sourcesaid.
Till recently, RTOs fol-lowed a manual systemand in the absence of ac-cess to real time data of allRTOs, they couldn’t checkif an applicant already hadanother driving licence.

Ahmedabad: In timeswhen the din over ‘love-ji-had’ is getting louder, bo-dies of a star-crossed in-ter-faith couple in Amerlidistrict were found in a fo-rest near Liliya, less than100 km from Gir sanctuarylast December.
Unfortunately, the ill-fated couple’s love endedin death despite Gujarathigh court’s directive tothe state government toensure the girl’s safetywith the court itself moni-toring the case.
The bond of love betwe-en Muslim boy SohilBambhaniya (21) and Hin-du girl Sejal Shiroliya
(17.5), both residents of Li-liya, was met with furioushostility from both famili-es. When they eloped thefirst time, an FIR was filedagainst Sohil for abduc-ting a minor girl for forcib-le marriage. As the famili-es settled the differences, the high court quashed cri-minal charges against theboy.
During the quashinghearing in October last,Sejal told the HC that she
was scared she will be for-cibly married to a personof her family's choice. Shealso categorically statedshe feared her life was indanger. Following this, thehigh court made her fami-ly members promise thatthey would not harm thegirl and force her into mar-riage before she turned 18.
Skeptic about the fami-ly’s behaviour, the HC alsoordered police to ensurethe girl’s safety. It orderedthat a protection officer vi-sit the girl every week toascertain her safety.
While the HC quashedthe FIR, it kept the matterpending expressing con-cern over safety of the girl.Justice JB Pardiwala, whowas hearing the case, as-ked advocate Kruti Shah toremain in touch with thegirl so that the minor couldconfide in her.
