In the southernmost part of the Caribbean, along the coast of Venezuela, lies lovely Aruba, which basks in the glory of its many fine attributes – beautiful beaches, a colorful underwater world, lively gaming casinos and cultural diversity.

Throughout much of its history, Aruba was ruled by the Dutch and remained part of the Netherlands Antilles until 1986. Today, the colonial Dutch buildings in the capital city of Oranjestad are a charming reminder of the island’s ancestral ties with Europe, but you’ll find that the fun-loving Arubans are far more Latin in spirit.

Situated just 18 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Aruba is strongly influenced by Latin America. Arubans love to dance and hypnotic rumba rhythms sway them into a festive mood. Aruba is known for its casinos, too; the Alhambra Casino is said to be one of the nicest in the Dutch Antilles.

Aruba also has some of the best stretches of beach to be found anywhere in the Caribbean. And though it is hot and dry (there is no rainy season), the island is cooled by constant trade winds.

The island’s two-mile strip known as Palm Beach is teeming with high-rise hotels, restaurants and

bars, and Latin rhythms waft from the terraces. Palm Beach, also known as Eagle Beach, is the

widest and most breathtaking beach on the island. Clear Caribbean waters and pristine white sand draw visitors, but shaded picnic areas and ample parking keep them there. The beach offers a unique and special attraction a few months a year. Four turtle species – Leatherback, Loggerhead, Green and Hawksbill – choose Eagle Beach as their nesting place. They typically hatch around sunset, so stick around after the day’s sunbathing and water sports come to a close.

One sight in Aruba that can’t be missed is its volcanic formation, which stands in the center of the isle. About 540 feet above sea level, Hooiberg (Dutch

for haystack) provides a sweeping view of the island and beyond. On clear days, Venezuela is visible in the distance. Climbing the Hooiberg is a bit of an adventure – there are about 587 steps to the top of the hill. Although not the highest point on the island, visitors feel like they’re on top of the world from this vantage point.

Upon arriving in Ireland, many travelers expect to immediately recognize stereotypical emerald hued hills and Guinness flowing plentifully. While these notions are somewhat true, visitors who limit their itinerary to exploring the pubs in Dublin and taking day trips to Glendalough or Powerscourt are not experiencing a complete Irish journey. Driving out of Dublin can be tough for inexperienced drivers, therefore be cautious or hire a tour company such as Brendan Vacations or Avanti for safe guidance through Ireland.

Every visitor to Ireland should visit Dublin, though they should not spend their entire holiday in the capital city. Exploring Dublin is necessary to appreciate and understand Irish culture. South of Dublin, lies Kinsale, which is an intimate, coastal town known for its friendly locals and delicious

Enjoy historical accounts and tales of Kinsale shared by a B&B owner as they serve a homemade breakfast. Prior to embarking on a tour of the town, be certain to wear comfortable shoes, as Kinsale’s streets are set on narrow, winding inclines.

If a journey west of Dublin is feasible, traveling to the Aran Islands is a must. Inis Mór is the largest of the islands, yet with a community of only 850 residents, visiting is comparable to stepping back in time. It is here where walls that were built by inhabitants hundreds of years ago still stand and outline parcels of land. Though difficult to navigate, the journey is absolutely worth the effort. This is the place where speaking Gaelic, basket weaving, sheep shearing and knitting are part of daily life.

When Insight Vacations offered a familiarization trip to Croatia, I immediately accepted. Croatia is a small Eastern European country with miles of picturesque coastline on the Adriatic Sea. It is nestled between Slovenia and Montenegro with more than 1,000 islands. Croatia is a land of history, culture and beauty. There are 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in this small country alone.

With a long history as varied as Croatia’s, the land holds so many interesting sites to see. In the capital city of Zagreb, you will see Ban Joip Jelacic Square, built in the 17th century, and many open-air markets. Zagreb’s medieval Upper Town includes 13th century St Marks Church, buildings with red clay roofs, and gas lamps lit each night by the lamp lighter.

Insight Vacations provided a special treat with a scenic drive outside the city to the rural countryside of the Zagorje region where many Croatians live a true farm-to-table lifestyle. After being welcomed at a small family establishment with cornbread and salt, homemade wine and roasted chestnuts, we dined on a traditional Croatian meal of pickled vegetables, beef salad with pumpkin seed oil, roasted duck with noodles and strudel.

Our next stop was the UNESCO Plitvice Lakes National Park. A 300-square-kilometer natural park

for hiking, walking, and enjoying the azure lakes and waterfalls.

The coastal town of Split is a mix of modern culture among ancient architecture. The UNESCO Diocletian Palace still stands as the largest covered area of ancient architecture in the world. Split offers high-end shopping, open-air markets and many places to dine al fresco while viewing the Adriatic coastline.

A drive down the Dalmatian Coast was stunning; every turn showed the beauty of the country. Along the way, Insight Vacations offered a special experience. We met with a local oyster farmer who took us on his boat to harvest oysters and mussels, then we dined on the fresh shellfish with local wine while the sun was setting.

Our final stop was Old Town Dubrovnik. We were educated on the history and current life of the Dubrovniks on a tour within the 14th to 15th century stone-walled city. The stone-paved streets are pedestrian use only. Shops and cafes are plentiful. Residents adorn their windows with plants and still hang their laundry out the windows. We walked on the 1.2 miles of stone walls protecting the city, admiring the city, mountains, sea and islands.

Once every 10 years, in Germany’s small Bavarian village of Oberammergau, a theatrical religious production is performed, known as the Passion Play. This inspiring play, which draws visitors from around the world, is based on the Bible’s account of the final days of Jesus Christ.

The story of the play began in 1633, at which time the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every 10th year, in so far as no one was to die of the ravaging bubonic plague anymore. The villagers were answered by God, and therefore in 1634 the first Passion Play took place. This promise has been kept until today, with performances being held from mid-May to early October.

The five-hour production involves more that 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all residents of the village, who bring the story of Jesus of Nazareth to the impressive open-air stage of the Passion Play Theatre. Almost half of Oberammergau’s population will devotedly act out the story of the man whose tidings for more than 2000 years have brought hope and power of life to an incredible number of people.

In 2020, the 42nd Passion Play will be performed,

and already tickets for the event are in high demand. Spoken dramatic text, music and songs are performed in German, with a printed translation of the script available in English. In addition, visitors can enjoy backstage tours of the Passion Play Theater throughout the year.

The island territory of Bermuda sits all by itself in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, six hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina. This isolation somehow adds to Bermuda’s charm. An overseas territory of the U.K., Bermuda actually comprises some 140 islands, most of which are small and uninhabited. Some of the friendliest people to be found anywhere live in Bermuda, primarily on eight main islands, which are connected by bridges and a causeway.

Bermuda is Britain’s oldest colony, and the British influence is prominent, from the governor’s annual tea party to the powdered wigs the judges in Hamilton might wear. Its proper, civilized culture includes rules banning billboards, neon signs and speed limits over 20 mph.

Few trees exist on this temperate island, but the vegetation is lush. The temperature averages 70 degrees in the winter and anywhere from 75 to 85 in the summer, making it an attractive year-round destination.

Though the Bermudan archipelago covers just 20 square miles, it features 64 gorgeous miles of coastline, including its famed pink-sand beaches. Visit South Shore Park, which stretches from Warwick Long Bay to Horseshoe Bay, for the greatest concentration of pink-sand beaches.

Grand Cayman’s colorful history, shaped by pirates, buccaneers, adventurers and shipwrecked mariners, tells tales of buried treasure. Even today, visitors occasionally find gold coins and other long-forgotten treasures washed upon the island’s white- sand shores. But the true treasure of Grand Cayman won’t be found on its beaches, but beneath the glassy surface of the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

For decades, divers the world over have flocked to the warm Caribbean waters to delve into the ocean’s crystal-clear depths, spectacular coral reefs and interesting marine life. What they have discovered surrounding Grand Cayman are miles of breathtaking sheer coral walls, brilliantly colored tropical fish, canyons, coral tunnels, caves, wrecks and seemingly endless visibility.

Twenty-two-mile-long Grand Cayman is actually one of three exposed summits of a submerged mountain range (the other two are Little Cayman and Cayman Brac). Over eons, the mountainsides below the water have been covered with an unbelievably beautiful coral reef, with water in some spots as shallow as 12 feet, and drop-offs as deep as an estimated 15,000 feet in others. Divided into six dive regions, Grand Cayman boasts more than 70 named boat and beach dive sites.

But there’s more to Grand Cayman than water. Seven Mile Beach is defined by its long stretches of

It was the most renowned two-lane highway in America … the nation’s first tarred transcontinental road. It had a mystique no highway before or since has achieved.

During World War II it was the Army’s transport route for troops and arms. After the war, it became the road to a new life for a whole legion of Midwestern homebodies who had never wandered a hundred miles from home, now tempted by the lure of the open road, the wonders of the West.

Today, if it’s your philosophy that the journey is more important than the destination, you’re ready for Route 66. Just let up on the gas pedal as you cruise the road, ease down an off-ramp marked with a Historic Route 66 marker, and take a look at what America was like before it became generic.

Rambling down the old highway, you get the strange sensation of being suspended between 1940 and 2018, stopping at the same attractions that fascinated travelers so many years ago.

A large part of Route 66’s nostalgic charm comes from its roadside oddities. And none is stranger than Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo, Texas where 10 Cadillacs are angled nose-down in the earth in a straight line. It’s the novel idea of Stanley Marsh III, a Dust Bowl child who grew up to be very wealthy. He called it a monument to the American dream.

Still, despite cozy towns and friendly people,

it’s tough to ignore that a melancholy number of hamlets suffer from decay. In the panhandle town of McLean, Texas, the Route 66 Museum, though small, captures the spirit of the road. It’s crammed with authentic artifacts, photos, scrapbooks, old Burma Shave signs, and a partial replica of a greasy spoon cafe, built from actual parts of a local café of the 1940s.

One thing Route 66 roadies insist on, whether you travel a section or go the full route, it’s that route that puts you in touch with the land, the roads, the people, the way life was before the world shrank. On the Interstate, you watch a scene speeding by. On Route 66, you are there in the scene.

Take in the sights. Look for unique angles such as carefully climbing high above your subjects, or getting the camera low to the ground for a change in viewpoint. Take both video and stills when you do this for more variety.

Have fun. Take some candid photos during the vacation of everyone having fun. You can capture great expressions and moments when your subject isn’t aware that the camera is pointed at them.

Pass the camera around. How will anyone know you were there if you stay behind the camera the entire time? Have others in your group take pictures or shoot video of you having fun too.

In the mid 1970s, AAA found there was a need for, and developed, an automotive repair facility recommendation program called Approved Auto Repair. Since then it has grown to a huge national program of more than 7,400 facilities that includes not only automotive repair shops, but also body shops, specialty repair shops such as transmission repair, and automotive glass installation and repair shops. AAA Northampton County has had an Approved Auto Repair program since the early 1980s and currently has almost 10 shops in an ever-growing number that is constantly expanding to cover the area that makes up AAA Northampton County's club footprint.

What does having an AAR program mean for AAA members? It means you have a reliable method to recognize a reputable auto repair facility that can help you maintain your family vehicle in an efficient and economical fashion. Also, as a AAA member you will receive certain benefits only available to you, which other customers don’t receive. And all shops in the program are continuously monitored to make sure they meet all the requirements of the program. So, what are some of those benefits and requirements that the shops have to offer?

When you present your AAA card, some of the benefits you can receive include a free maintenance inspection when having other paid repair work performed. You will receive a written estimate, if requested by you, of any needed main-tenance or repair work. If the final cost of the work that is recommended exceeds the estimate by more than 10%, you will receive a revised estimate.

Also, on most repairs you will receive a 24-month or 24,000-mile warranty – whichever comes first – for parts and labor, unless you are advised in advance of a different warranty. If at the begin-ning of your repair you request all the old parts back, they will be returned to you, except those that may have a core value on them, in which case they will be retained for you to view.

Finally, AAA will assist in investigating a dispute between an AAA member and an AAR facility if formally requested by the member. AAA’s resolution is binding on the facility, but you are not bound by the decision and may seek other recourse. with the facility as to what they may be.All AAR repair facilities must meet certain

requirements and then be recertified on a yearly basis during an inspection performed by the AAA club’s AAR field representative, who is typically an ASE-certified Master technician with quite a few years of technical experience. Some of those requirements are: AAR facilities must employ either National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified or a manufacturer’s trained technicians. They must also have courteous and efficient reception personnel trained to advise customers regarding vehicle maintenance or repairs, and a supervisor must be available to perform quality control checks.

AAR facilities must maintain a clean, professionally organized appearance, inside and out. Customer areas such as waiting rooms and bathrooms must be safe, clean and comfortable. All AAA-approved facilities must pass a background check from the attorney general’s office, the Better Business Bureau, and a financial rating service. They also must receive

a 90% or better approval rating on a AAA survey of recent customers. Additionally, they must carry a minimum amount of liability insurance to protect customers and their vehicles. Finally, they are continuously monitored throughout the year by numerous field visits, along with an annual recertification inspection in which all the previous year’s inspection is rechecked for compliance. All AAR shops provide minimum service, diagnosis, and repairs in maintenance/light repairs, gasoline engine performance, brake systems, and electrical systems. Other mechanical areas are optional and may not be offered at all AAR locations.

KEEP YOUR CAR BATTERY PURRINGWinter weather isn’t only tough on the outside of

your vehicle, it can be especially tough on what’s inside under the hood – including your battery. These days, the demand for power from your bat-tery is constant, from the moment you turn the key in the ignition until you turn it off, and needs to provide power to more built-in equipment and connected devices than ever before. This includes everything from navigation systems and heated seats to portable music systems and cell phones.

After surviving the winter, it’s good practice to check the health of your battery, and follow a few spring vehicle maintenance tips, before thoughts turn to summer vacations.

Start with your tires, even if you drive on “all season” tires. Heavy, consistent snow and ice require snow tires, which absolutely should be replaced with the non-snow variety. If you drive on all season radials, this is the time to rotate them. By rotating tires seasonally, you extend the life of the set.

Windshield wiper blades also take a beating during winter weather. Cold temperatures are hard on rubber compounds, and they are assailed with slush kicked up by traffic. This slush often carries with it corrosive salt used to melt road ice, which can do a number on your blades. Early spring is a good time to check and replace them if necessary. Check

your windshield fluid as well since there’s a good chance winter’s dirt has exhausted the reservoir.

Clean your vehicle’s underbody. There’s no magic solution to getting rid of the corrosive salt build-up but the best tool is a high-pressure sprayer. Pay special attention to the area around the front and rear bumpers. Once you’ve thoroughly sprayed the underbody, check for signs of rust and take the necessary steps to stop any small rust spots from eating away at your vehicle. We’ve all seen those pillars of snow that form around bumpers and wheel wells. That’s the most likely place for road salt to begin the erosion process. While you’re at it, you might as well wash the whole car. Winter is not conducive to leisurely afternoons spent hosing off your vehicle and chances are it’s been a while.

Examine your brakes. Like wipers, brakes take on a bigger role during wintertime and should be checked to ensure that they’ve survived. Listen for brake noises such as grinding, chatter, or squeals. Even if your brakes aren’t making any distinctive noises, it’s still a good idea for you or your mechanic to determine the amount of wear on the pads or drums. We often become accustomed to the feel of worn brakes, without realizing that what we’re used to is a deteriorated ability to stop.

Check all automotive fluids and top off as necessary. Winter driving conditions require your engine to work harder and condensation can cause moisture build-up in the engine that creates wear. If your car is due for scheduled maintenance, have the oil changes and be sure to use the proper formulation and viscosity recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Many automakers now require special, fuel-conserving low-viscosity semi- or full-synthetic engine oils for year-round use.

Go over the interior of your vehicle. This includes taking out and washing floor liners. Vacuum and clean the carpets, and make sure they are dry before you put the liners back in.

Now you’re ready for warmer temperatures. Of course, soon you will need to prepare your vehicle

for the long hot summer that’s right around the corner.

Inspect your battery. Check the cables and terminals for corrosion/oxidization and clean if necessary. Also, ensure that the battery is not bulging or cracked in any way.

Some other signs your battery may need to be replaced after the long winter are:• Your vehicle cranks slowly when trying to start• You hear a grinding, clicking or buzzing when you turn the ignition on• Your vehicle has stalled• Your headlights dim when you are idling but brighten when you rev the engine

If the battery is older than 3 years, or you feel it may be failing – it’s best to call AAA Mobile Battery Service and have a trained battery technician drive to your home or office to test your battery and charging system; they will even replace your battery on the spot if required.Valid only for AAA Northampton County members.
