Hello AAA Members,
I hope you all have had a chance to see the photos of the AAA Spring Classic online. It was
such a fun show and an amazing experience to see the Silver Lining Program work with their horses.
We were so pleased to award a portion of the proceeds to this program to help them with their goal of
getting to the Special Olympics Equestrian Team Events in Flagstaff Arizona this summer. Thank you
to everyone who came out and we wish all the Silver Lining competitors best of luck in their summer
competition.
Summer is upon us and local shows will be slowing down. Please don’t forget about the August
3-4th show in cool Flagstaff Arizona. Our judges will be Dave Parlier and Andrea Simons. This was
such a fun show last year that it was referred to as a “not to miss” show. Our exhibitors came from
Colorado, New Mexico & California. We know that number will grow this year. We have had several
sponsors step up and this year there will be multiple special class awards announced as well as the
jackpot classes and a Champion of Champion Halter Class. I believe the egg and spoon class was
requested again too! Premiums will be online soon so watch for further announcements on Facebook.
Lastly, we are less than two months away from ApHC Nationals and Youth World. If you are
going please let us know – there is a group trying to get stalls for all the AZ people. Stall reservations
are due May 30th. We will be participating in the Youth Team events again and are in search of
additional youth members. This is the 75th Anniversary of ApHC and a show you will not want to miss.

2013 Board of Directors Meeting Schedule
From The Desk Of The President
In 2006, the ApHC started a reward program that recognized the regional clubs’ promotion of the Appaloosa horse and Youth events. The AAA Board of Directors decided to run for the award. While the AAA did not win that year, they did receive a certificate of merit: The very first regional club award went to Magnolia States ApHC from Territory V. After that, Calizona, being the oldest regional club in existence, was bound and determined to win and they did just that for the years 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. When the 2011 AAA President, Mary Ann Page, saw the consistent winning Calizona achieved, she thought, “Hey, we are a good club too!” She approached the BOD and asked if everyone thought we should strive for this award, and, hands down, all agreed. The AAA planned throughout the year, setting up many events, hoping to be recognized for their promotion of the Appaloosa horse. The ApHC provides set criteria and scoring to obtain the regional exemplary club status and BOD members looked to see how they might fare. Surprisingly, the AAA found the club was doing most of the events on the list. There were a few items the club was not doing that the club felt they could incorporate. Towards the end of the year, members met several times to put together the scrapbook. The group thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of it all. It was a thrilling day when the AAA found out that their hard work paid off and we had won the award for 2011.
AAA is the 2012 ApHC Exemplary Regional Club!

In 2012, the AAA BOD planned on applying for the award from the get go. Trail rides, more shows, stallion auctions, a clinic, a youth scholarship, a Youth World team and more were planned. The AAA’s number one priority is to establish a club where all are welcome, feel valued, endorse service to others, and collectively, enjoy the wonderful Appaloosa. Sportsmanship is an idea and commitment AAA members fully embrace. At the 2012 AAA banquet, Mary Ann asked all members to submit their own definition on Sportsmanship.
What we did not count on is that our Youth World team would win the 2012 Youth Team Sportsmanship award, and at the October 2012 World show, member Karin Wendell won the Non-Pro Sportsmanship award. We are honored to have won this prestigious award. Our members are an exceptional group of people, and we invite you to come out for one of our events and check us out!

Arizona Appaloosa Association is ready for an
updated look and in search of a new logo. We are
looking for members to submit their ideas for this
new design. Designs must be submitted with
considerations made to ease of embroidery and
screen printing. Ashley Worthington of
Worthington Graphics sent these two examples.
One in full color, great for print and banners. The
other in black in white, for screen printing and
embroidery.
If you are artistic or great with graphic design we hope you will send in your ideas and possibly be the new face of AAA. The selections will be narrowed down by the BOD and then selected by the members. Please e-mail your submissions to [email protected] by October 1, 2013.

AAA Youth Excel at Arizona 4-H County Finals!
Katie Hefner & “Surely A Vision MMR”
On April 19th, 20th and 21st, the Maricopa County 4H Club held
their annual County Finals Championships. This is a highly
competitive, fun filled weekend for 4H members and their
families with more than 100 participants over the 3 day event
in English, Jumping, Western, Gymkhana, Roping and Team
Sorting. Youth are divided into 4 divisions in 4H, beginner
riders, intermediate riders, Junior Advanced and Senior
Advanced. This year the event was held at the South Buckeye
Equestrian Center, a huge facility with 2 covered arenas, 3
uncovered arenas, a bunkhouse, many barns and other
amenities. This year there were many Appaloosa riders in
attendance. On Friday there were five Appaloosa’s competing
in English, Saturday there were two Appaloosas in roping and
two different Appaloosas participating in the gymkhana
event. On Sunday there were 5 Appaloosas in Western and
one Appaloosa competing in Team Sorting.
Among these Appaloosa owners were 3 members of the
Arizona Appaloosa Association, Nikki McNatt, and siblings
Katie Hefner and Michael Hefner. The Hefner family owns
two Appaloosas, “Surely a Vision MMR” (Surely) and “She’s All Dolled
Up” (Georgia). Katie and “Surely” had a fabulous weekend. They
competed in Intermediate English and received a 1st in English
Showmanship and a 1st in English Equitation. Then, two days later
Katie and “Surely” tied for high point in Intermediate Champion
Western Horse, receiving a beautiful new belt buckle.
Saturday, Nikki McNatt, owner of Hershey’s Special Kid, “Scooter”,
received an 8th in Cloverleaf Barrels with the top ten times all being
less than half a second apart. In Washington poles the pair had the
2nd fastest time of the day but unfortunately a 5 second penalty for a
downed pole put them out of the ribbons.
On Sunday riding against over 20 teams, Nikki , with Hershey’s Special
Kid and Michael Hefner, riding his Quarter Horse Cowboy, were
partnered in Senior Advanced Team Sorting. The two were able to
pull off two beautiful runs which netted them the championship and
two new belt buckles. Nikki and Hershey’s Special Kid had an
awesome day sorting as they also won the Reserve Senior Advanced
Team Sorting title and a new breast collar with their other team
member, Marie, riding her Quarter Horse, Willie.
Congratulations to all of our members. Your hard work and practice
really paid off! We are proud of you and all you do to promote the
Appaloosa horse.

Nikki McNattNikki McNattNikki McNatt———Graduate!Graduate!Graduate!
Congratulations to Nikki McNatt who is graduating from
Arizona Agribusiness and Equine High School on May 16,
2013. Nikki will be off to the University of Arizona in the fall
to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science with a
minor in Business. Nikki has worked hard during her high
school career and has already achieved 60 college credits
through Red Mountain Community College. She will be going
down to U of A as a transfer student with only two years left
to complete her Bachelor’s Degree. After that she is hoping to
attend Colorado State University or the newly opening
Midwestern University Veterinary program opening next year
in Glendale. Nikki set her goals high many years ago to be a
large animal vet and is continuing to pursue this dream. She
currently works for a local lab collecting samples at our local
dairies to test for harmful bacteria in their milk cows, as well
as interning with her mentor, Dr. Dean Rice at both his small
animal vet practice and assisting him with equine care. Nikki
and her Appaloosa, Hershey's Special Kid, have been great
promoters of the Appaloosa breed competing at local
gymkhanas, breed shows, 4H, many parades and traveling
and performing with a drill team at rodeos in Arizona, Nevada
