Illinois Street AECOM Project No. 60163572 Dear Ms. Pisterzi: Pursuant to conditions specified in a permit (see attached) issued by the City of Chicago, radiation monitoring was required to be performed at the above referenced site. AECOM provided the required radiation surveillance on September 21, 2010 for the excavation and removal of the existing light pole foundation and its replacement with a new deeper foundation at the same location. The foundation excavation occurred within the sidewalk on the northwest corner of the intersection of E. Illinois Street and N. Peshtigo Court (refer to attached drawing and photo). The excavation was approximately 6 by 8 feet at the surface and extended to a maximum depth of 12 feet. Radiological surveying was performed for the concrete and soil material removed for the excavation. The monitoring revealed no indication of soil material above the clean-up threshold established by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for the Streeterville area of Chicago. The USEPA cleanup threshold for Chicago's Streeterville area is 7.1 picocuries per gram (pCilg total radium (Ra-226 + Ra-228). Gamma radiation count measurements for the project were made using a Ludlum Model 2221 survey meter (Serial #176944) and unshielded 2 x 2 Nal probes (Model 44-10). For the instrument used, the gamma count indicative of the 7.1 pCi/g threshold is 17,522 counts per minute (cpm). Gamma readings and/or background at the surface was approximately 6,500 cpm. Gamma readings for the excavated soil materials ranged from 5,500 to 8,600 cpm with a maximum of 10,240 cpm. Thus, there was no indication of an exceedance of the USEPA cleanup threshold.
