Sarah, a 31 year old of ce manager, has three y ears experience in a further education colleg e. She is a sing le parent with a 14 y ear old son. Sarah had no saving s and, althoug h she had missed two mortg ag e pay ments, had little other debt. She was very  concerned about covering her mortg ag e and every day  expenses f or her and her son. Our specialist money advisor helped her to identify  way s to make saving s and advised she completed a g rants application. We were able to award Sarah with a g rant to cover two month’s mortg ag e and council tax pay ments which prevented her g etting into serious debt and establish a new budg et plan.

Martin is a university lecturer and has worked at the same university f or the last 5 y ears. Martin wasref erred to Recourse throug h the UCU as he had recently  been off work following his teenag e son’s suicide.

He explained to our counsellor that neither he nor his wif e had realised that their son was experiencing any problems and that his suicide had come as a complete shock. Martin was strug gling to cope and desperate to see if there was anything  he could have done to prevent it. Our counsellor had considerable experience of dealing with

the aftermath of suicides, so the sessions really helped Martin to come to terms with his g rief and learn how to support his wif e and daug hter.  Martin was also directed towards other org anisations who could provide support and therapy for him and his family  over the long er term.
