Welcome to A4, Ari’s first supplementary issue. A4 serves as an extension of Ari Magazine, filled with more articles on Art & Creativity. For our cover, and throughout the magazine, we’ve featured beautiful images from Spanish photographer Xavier Comas. The images belong to a series of photos called ‘Derelict’, in which Comas documents a disappearing village of Malay descent in Thailand’s troubled southern province of Narathiwas. Unfortunately, the images of these children from the ‘Scaring Village’ may very well be the last of their generation. Coincidentally, I was introduced to a book by Adam Kahane called Power & Love. His book, inspired by Paul Tillich – an existential philosopher, categorizes human motivation into 2 basic driving forces: Power, which is “the drive of everything to realize itself with increasing intensity”, and Love, which is defined as “the drive towards unity and interconnectedness”. Both these entities exist within all of us, and both can work for or against us. When the drive for power goes bad, it creates oppression, isolation and tyranny. Love itself can become equally harmful by constraining and undermining the individual and those they love. Which brings me back to current concerns with places like the Scaring Village and, most importantly, Thailand’s current situation, where the push and pull of Power and Love seem to have caused major damage. While the various people I spoke to all have differing views on this subject, everyone unanimously agrees on one thing: the need for change. Thailand has been blessed with fertile grounds, natural resources and great weather. There’s been no real need to strive for anything. That’s why we’ve developed such a casual nonchalant ‘sabai sabai’ attitude towards life. But times are changing and, as the world gets smaller, Thailand is struggling to adapt to those changes. We’re witnessing an era of tremendous social, structural and economical awareness. It’s a pivotal time that’s both scary and exciting as Thailand tries to re-identify itself and find its place amongst the rest of the world.

ในขณะเดียวกันก็ได้มีคนแนะนำหนังสือเล่มหนึ่งที่ชื่อว่า Power

ผลักดันอยู่สองประการนั่นคือ พลังอำนาจ และ ความรัก ซึ่ง

ประเทศไทยนั้น ต่างก็เผชิญกับการฉุดเหนี่ยวจากหลายด้าน

จนเกิดปัญหา ที่สร้างความเสียหายอันใหญ่หลวง และถึงแม้ว่า

หลายคนจะมีความคิดเห็นที่ต่างกัน อย่างหนึ่งที่ทุกคนเห็นตรง

THE REINVENTION OF MUSIC

Soon after the release of her second solo album Out of the Woods in 2007, and various collaborations with bands like The Unbending Trees, Tracey Thorn, the lead singer of EBTG, returned to Berlin to work on her third solo album Love and Its Opposite, a beautifully stripped down diary of her personal experiences.Here, Ari talks with her about making this album:

How long did it take you to finish this album; was there a particular theme? I was working on it for about 2 years, but very little of that time was spent recording - I would do a few days of recording, then have a long gap when I’d be writing more songs, or just living my life. Then a few more days recording. And so on. Lyrically, many of the songs are stories of things happening to me, or to people around me – friends or family, and told from the perspective of someone of my age. So the themes are mid-life events - things like divorce, or the difficulties

of keeping relationships alive after a long time, or dealing with teenage kids, or finding yourself unexpectedly single again when you are no longer a teenager yourself. Those kinds of things. Was it a conscious choice between you and Ewan Pearson (the producer) to tone down the electronic beats on this album?

Yes, I wanted it to be more of a real ‘solo’ album, so I played more of the instruments myself - piano and guitars. When I started writing the lyrics I realized that the music needed to be quite simple and minimal so as not to distract from the words.

Who are you listening to these days?

Caribou, Stornoway and MGMT recently. At this exact moment I am sitting in a hotel eating breakfast and Nick Drake is playing in the background, and I’m thinking how amazing he still sounds.

His goal is to inspire today’s youth to know what true R&B sounds like. He’s teamed up with an array of artists ranging from Jamie Hawkins (Lauren Hill, En Vogue) , Bobby Ozuma (Raphael Saadiq, Mary J. Blige), and Ronnie Scott (Goapele).

When you first listen to Tony Towerz’s music you’re instantly struck with something familiar, but you just can’t put your finger on it. With influences ranging from David Bowie to Marvin Gaye, Tony does more than emulate his idols, he mashes them up seamlessly forming what he calls “genre-re-creation”. On his album Plastik Soul, Tony teams up with his friends Scott Chris, Furious & B. Walker, taking you on a kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of 1980s + R&B musical landscapes.

from other artists around him. His voice is reminiscent of a darker and funnier John Legend. His lyrics are emotional, a little twisted and often alarmingly straight forward, which only reinforces the entity that is Yirayah. His inspirations are drawn from personal experiences and various artists like Stevie Wonder, Kurt Coban and Thom York, as well as to what he describes as “that crazy F%$# living in my head”. Yirayah’s album My Socks Hurt is definitely a journey worth following.

After gaining so much attention for covering Thai songs from bands like The Richman Toy, Silly Fools and Potato on YouTube, Humuman from Japan are set to perform and debut their original Thai songs at this year’s FAT FEST, which takes places this November in Bangkok.

It’s like opening Thai music to the world. We feel very flattered and thankful.”

Inspired by a book found at the Sang Arun Forest Monastery named A Man Who Can Recall Past Lives, director Apichatpong Weerasethakul creates a poetic dialogue of one man’s path to his final days of life. Diagnosed with acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee moves back to the countryside to be close to his loved ones. He is suddenly reunited with his deceased wife who reappears as a ghost to take care of him whilst his long-lost son returns home in a non-human form. “I have been interested in the destruction and extinction process of cultures and of spices,” he says “Boonmee is an emblem of something that is about to disappear”.

The VitraHaus, by Herzog & de Meuron, was designed to look like a series of houses intersecting and stacked upon each other. While walking through its maze-like structure, visitors can explore inspiring classic works of Charles & Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi, as well as more contemporary offerings from designers such as Maarten Van Severen and Jasper Morrison.

CROSS POLLINATION OF ART

Artists have always been travelling, seeking inspiration and ideas in new places.Ari takes a look 3 artists from 3 different places to see what they have created.

Italian-born Berlin-based artist Monica Bonvicini explores the relationship between space, power and gender. Her work has a strong physical appearance that demands its presence when a viewer enters the room. Sometimes the boundaries between what is private and public are blurred, causing a very uncomfortable voyeuristic approach. In her piece ‘Light Me Black’, she creates a structure with over 148 bright fluorescent lights fixed onto it. The structure itself is almost invisible, creating the impression of a large suspended veil of light which causes a temporary blinding effect to its viewers.

Through her recent travels to India, Pakistan and Baghdad, Tintin Copper has created larger-than-life sized drawings made from charcoal. Drawings such as ‘ Portrait of a Man’ and ‘A Call for Re-elections in Bagdad’ featured here are inspired by current events that deconstruct ideologies of heroism, peace and war.

Born in Israel and educated at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, Nir Segal captures his experiences in a vibrant country like Thailand through forms of shapes and colors. In his recent show ‘Sit-You-Ate’, Segal utilizes all forms of media including installations, paintings, photographs and videos, while a huge wallpaper covers the gallery walls in various patterns showing Nir’s photograph interpretation of the busy city of Bangkok. “I am interested in creating an uncomfortable edge to my work. As a artist I wish to exist in this uncomfortable place. The border between failure and success is where I feel my works live the most,” he says.

THE LITTLE LIGHT PROJECT

With a simple belief that everyone has the power to make things better by helping others, Prae Sunantaraks has set up “The Little Light project”, in which volunteers help visually-impaired children gain skills and confidence through various activi-ties, such as teaching Braille and games that can enhance the children’s sensory skills. Through these activities children can learn that blindness does not have to stop them from developing ideas, getting an education, being independent and, most importantly, being happy.

No matter how much Bangkok tries to accommodate cars and people, it is still a swamp turned into a concrete maze of sirs. Arguably, the motorcycle taxi (or ‘mo’cy’ as locals call it ) is the best form of transportation in Bangkok; reaching your destination in less than five minutes, it is inexpensive, ubiquitous and, unlike regular taxis, even provides a service in uniform. The current motorcycle taxi culture is a beautiful and practical outcome of improvisation; brightly colored vests stating the territory, custom-made wooden benches at the nicely shaded ‘terminal’ at the beginning of the street, trees that serve as a rack, a shelf, a memo board and the large price list for destinations offered. But while it may be the most efficient form of transport in this city, the motorcycle was not designed for the safety, comfort and convenience of passengers. There is no plan to design the streets to accommodate motorbike taxi terminals. These issues are all design opportunities; a way to official accept and create a unique identity for Bangkok, the city of sois. But if we are to seriously include the motorcycle taxi as part of Bangkok’s urban planning and mass transit system, streets need to be designed to accommodate all the currently competing elements: motorbike taxis, food vendors, salengs, cars, pedestrians, buses, taxis and tuk-tuks.

ISSUES

Thai conceptual photographer Kara Yong Kara Choco explores our use of plastic bags. “When people use plastic bags to put things that belong to them in, the bag itself covers up the people.“ Taking this idea, he created a series of photos of models wearing customized dresses made from plastic bags from different stores. Kara Yong Kara Choco’s images were taken both in Thailand and Japan.

今号のA４の表紙とグラビアはスペイン人写真家ザビエー・コマスの仕事にフォーカス。観る者の内面に語りかけるこれらの写真は＜ディアリクト＞と名付けられたシリーズの一部だ。ザビエーは紛争の続くタイ南部のナラティワートを旅し＜恐怖の村＞とよばれる消滅間近の集落を取材した。住民はほとんどがマレー系だ。

テングー・サムスディン王の宮 殿 跡＜ルモー・ラジョ（別名：ラジャの家）＞に滞在するため、ザビエーは現地に向かった。地元に伝わる口承によるとシャム王朝がこのエリアを制圧する前、サムスディン王は外部の敵から宮殿を守るための魔術をかけたという。しかし今日では、宮殿は廃墟となりはてている。

写 真 の 子 供 た ち は 、か つ て 花 開 い た文 化 の 最 後 の 継 承 者 と な る だ ろ う 。ほ の ぼ の と し た 光 景 で あ り な が ら 、ど こ か 幻 影 を み て い る よ う で も あ る 。

ヒストグラムに円グラフ、データの視覚化には様々な手段がある。カタログツリーのダニエル・グロスとジョリス・マルサが探求してきたのは、より有機的なアプローチだ。鳥の群れや毎日の交通渋滞などの自己組織化のメカニズムを取り入れた、型破りなデータ表現の手法を提案する。科学者レイ・フィスマンとエドワード・ミギュエルが集積した、ニューヨークの外交官が支払わなかった駐車違反切符の学術調査をベースにしたポスターのシリーズ＜汚職取り締まりの法的執行に対する、様々な国における慣習の基準の調査＞は2008年のダッチ・デザイン・アワードを受賞。ニューヨークのクーパー・ヒューイット国立デザイン博物館の永久収蔵品にも選ばれた。最近取り組んでいるのは自家製３D光システムスキャナを駆使したポスターのシリーズと、犯罪現場の記録係として雇われている法廷写真家が全写真を撮影した、アトリエの展覧会＜オフ・スプリング＞のカタログ制作。

捨てられたモノ達がサヤカ・ガンツの印象的な彫刻で新たな命を授かる。「いろんなピースでパズルを組み立てたいという想いが、私の中にいつもある。ばらばらに見えるようなものを組み合わせて、自分なりのパズルを作るのが好き」。 自然を投影したサヤカの彫刻は複雑で緻密。

「 私 は い ろ ん な 国 で 育 っ た の 。制 作 のプ ロ セ ス は 、ま るで そ の 経 験 に 倣 っ てい る よう 。生 ま れ た 場 所 と の 関 係 性 が希 薄 だ から 、自 分 が 心 地 よくいられ るコミュニ ティを 探 りつ づ け て い る の ね 」。

エストニア出身のエヴェリン・カスコフ。現在はロンドンのグリニッジに住み、印刷の視覚効果を手法に取り入れたクロスステッチを制作している。セント・マーチンの修士課程在籍中にこの表現方法を探求し、今ではワイアード誌やニューヨーク・タイムズ紙で活躍している。

フランスのデザイナー、マティユー・ルアヌーとハーバード大教授のデヴィッド・エドワーズが開発したのは、NASAによる植物の働きの研究を下敷きに考案した空気清浄システム。もともと植物には空気浄化能力があるが、アンドリアには空気を葉と根に通過させる仕組みが取り入れられているので、より高い効果がのぞめる。ホルムアルデヒトなどの屋内の有害な毒素を、普通の空気清浄機より最高4400%も多く取り除くことができる。

現 代 音 楽 家イヴァン・パラッキーのC Dジャケットは、リスナーが 彼の音 楽を通して経 験することを体 現している。考 案したのはチェコのデザイナー、フーボローコロロ。パラッキーの音楽に共鳴する前のリスナーが 、その音 楽をプレーンなもののように捉えるのと同じ様に、開封前のジャケットは真っ白で文 字だけが並ぶ。しかし封をあけると共にシーリングが破れ、CDの中身に合わせた色のインクがカバーにしみ出してくる。

CARLOS TARRATSカーロス・タロッツ

デジタル・デザインと写真を学んだのち、アメリカ最大手の衣料メーカー、アメリカン・アパレルで働き始めたカーロス。彼が影響を受けたのはヨーロッパと日本のデザイン。暇があればタイ映画＜オン・バック（邦題：マッハ!!! ! ! ! ! !）＞を観るのが好きという一面も。

ビニール袋と人間の関係性を巡るコンセプチュアルな作品を作っているタイ人フォトグラファ。「ビニール袋の中身は持ち主を反映する。だから袋には持ち主自身を覆う一面がある」と考えを語る。カラヨン・カラチョコの写真では、モデルが日本やタイから集められたビニール袋でつくられた服をまとう。

60枚の鏡が内蔵された＜リフレクシャス・クロック＞はロシアのデザイン集団アート・レーべデェフの作品。鏡は的確な角度まで回転し、１本のレーザー光線を反射させて時刻を形づくっていく。

タイのバンド、リッチマン・トイは２枚目のアルバム＜ルムナム・サディン・ラブ・ユー＞にタイの演 歌ルクトゥンのテイストを取り入れ、見事ブレイク。同アルバムの＜オード・オード＞という曲がヒットし、ハヌマンという日本のバンドにカヴァーされるまでになった。

「僕たちはタイ人のための曲を作ってる。安易に洋楽のまねをしたくないから、自分たちの音にちょっとだけタイ演歌と民謡を加えることにしたんだ」バンドのリードボーカル、ジャップは言う。ユーチューブ上のカヴァー動画に話が及ぶと「他の人が自分達の曲を演奏するのはすごく嬉しい。それが他の国の人ならなおさら。タイの音楽を世界に広げていけるなんて誇らしく思うよ」。

ケイト・マクドーウェルは醜い社会問題を美しい磁器製の彫刻で表す。「自然界への憧憬を表現したわ。美しき自然界と、私たち現代人が自然に与える残酷な仕打ちをロマンティックに表すことでそのコントラストを打ち出したかったの。しかもその関係は、時に邪魔したり困らせあったりするものだってことを」。ケイトはタイ南 部 の パンガン 島 でシュノー ケリング 中 に 間 近 でみてショックを 受けたタコをモチーフに、作 品を制 作 中だ。

エヴリシング・バット・ザ・ガールのリード・ボーカル、トレイシーが３枚目となるソロアルバム＜ラヴ・アンド・イッツ・オポジット＞をリリースした。今 回のアルバムはイワン・ピアソンプロデュースのもと、ベルリンとイギリスで 制 作 。トレイシー がこのアルバムについてアリー・マガジンに語ってくれた。

─ こ の ア ル バ ム に は ど の く ら い の 時間 を か け た ？ 　 ま た テ ー マ の よ うな も の が あ れ ば 教 え て く れ る か な 。

「制作には２年間。といってもレコーディングにかかった時間はほんの少し。最初のレコーディングのあと、しばらくスタジオを離れた期間があったの。曲を書き加えたり、普通に暮らしたりしてたわ。そのあとでまた数日レコーディングって感じ。歌詞には自分や家族、友達の周りで起こった出来事を織り込んだわ。語り手は同世代の女性。だからテーマは＜ミドルエイジの一大事＞ってとこかな。離婚したり、長年のパートナーとの関係が壁にぶちあたったり、思春期の子供がたいへんとか、十代のころみたい に独りぼっちの自分に気づいちゃったとかね」。

MTVやベルヴェデーレなど名だたるクライアントと仕事をしてきたドレス・コードのデザイナーでニューヨーク在 住のアンドレとダンが＜ネバー・スリープ＞と題した本を完成させた。「カレッジを卒 業した時 、学 生から社会人への過渡期について教えてくれる本 が出ていないことに気づいたんだ。この本には僕らの経験をすべて詰め込んだよ」。

ジェズ・バロウズの肩書きはデザイナー、イラストレーターそれでもって森マニア。「僕の作品には自然を扱ったものが多いんだ。仕 事ばかりしていると恋しくなるんだろうね 。森をぬけ、川 沿いを歩く喜びにまさるものはないよ」と彼は言う。クライアントは ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙、モノクル誌など。

常 に私 たちに新 鮮 な 驚きをあたえてくれるヴェルサ ー チ。この 秋 、装 飾 が取りはらわれアシンメトリーに切りぬかれたイヴニング・ドレスが美しい。レザ ー 、伸 縮 素 材 、プリーツシフォンといった 素 材 の 組 み 合 わ せ にも注 目 。

拠点はアメリカのジョージア州アトランタ。ユーラヤーはかっこいい韻の踏み方を知るシンガーだ。彼の音楽はとても個人的で、歌詞はときに衝撃的なほど直球。ブロンド・レッドヘッドのようなロックバンドからリトル・ドラゴンのようなエレクトロ・ソウル、そしてレディオヘッド、テレンス・トレント・ダービーに至るまで幅広く影響を受けた。それが彼の音楽にアトランタ出身の他のミュ ージシャンとは一線を画す深みを与えている。

ドイツのヴァイル・アム・レインにあるヴィトラ・キャンパスに、フランク・ゲーリー の＜ヴィトラ・デ ザイン・ミュージアム＞、ザハ・ハディドの＜消 防 署＞に肩 をならべて、新 たな 建 築 が 登 場 。ヘルツォー ク＆ド・ムートンの 設 計 による＜ヴィトラハウス＞はヴィトラ社 のショール ームだ 。チャールズ＆レイ・イームズ やイサム・ノグ チといった 巨 匠 の 作 品 からマールテン・ヴァン・セーヴェレン、ジャスパ ー・モリソンによる 現 代 的 なものまで 傑 出したデ ザインが 展 示 されている 。
