recycling the psychedelic beat music of the 60’s in a really exciting way, middlemist red counts as one of the most promising acts of the local guitar pop scene with a great future ahead. the four-piece is presenting their brand new debut album on this night, supported by British band Disraeli gears, who took their name from Cream’s legendary 1967 album.

izhevksi is one of the most prominent figures of russian underground electronic dance music. his musical scale spreads from classic deep house to tech house, and he creates music with another moscow producer, gorje hawek. their first single, nomdetemps, was released in 2012, the latest one, en route, came out this year. Before izhevski, the emblematic DJ of the local electronic scene, isu, will present an amazing set.

the Boxer rebellion is sometimes hailed as the new radiohead, but their inspiration is a lot more varied than that. Although they reside in the UK, they are led by American-born nathan nicholson, and they have released four albums so far, the latest one being last year’s promises (since then they have also made a live album). Discovered ten years ago by the legendary Alan mcgee, the Boxer rebellion plays exciting guitar music and they are especially strong live. opening act is local band We Are rockstars who are on friendly terms with nicholson & co.

the culprit always returns to the scene of the crime! this time, an al-bum material returns to the scene where it was created. Kerekes Band, mixing folk music and dancey funk rock presents the material that was recorded right here, on the A38 ship. there will be plenty of ethno-funk, csango boogie and stadium folk, provided by noted guests such as mégötlövés from Bëlga and roman rapper funkyD. support comes from local band iparkutya.

mount Kimbie is one of the most exciting formations of today’s electronic music playing post-dubstep and ambient, and they are ready to enchant the audience of the A38 ship on this november night. the duo of Kai Campos and Dom maker was formed in london in 2008 and has released two albums so far: both Crooks & lovers (2010) and 2013’s Cold spring fault less youth received universal critical acclaim. their DJ set will be preceded by the performances of amazing local acts.

Bury tomorrow, formed in southampton in 2006, is a metalcore band that is beefy and lyrical at the same time. their debut album portraits came out in 2009, already with great international success. the follow-up arrived three years later, titled the Union of Crowds, and their third album runes was released this year. Don’t miss the concert of Australian group hands like houses either, playing catchy emocore songs, who have made two long players so far (ground Dweller - 2012, Unimagine - 2013). opening act is hungarian band faminehill.

named after the original form of yolo (yel, meaning you enjoy life), french electro-pop trio yelle plays chic and cheerful music. of course it would be hard to imagine them without the influence of the french touch, the frech electronic wave of the 2000s (Daft punk, Justice, Cassius) and ye-ye pop sound of the 60’s. singer Julie Budet sings in french, and her amazing voice has filled three albums so far - the latest one, Completement fou, is quite recent, as it came out this september.

scandinavia has produced a lot of great pop artists, and it seems that this tendency still continues. the latest nordic pop treasure is Karen marie Ørsted aka mø from Denmark. most people probably know her from Avicii’s club anthem Dear Boy, but her solo stuff is more built on soul, tight r&B and wild electro-punk. she released her full-length debut no mythologies to follow this march, and she was scheduled to play on the A38 in may but she had to cancel her performance. she’s making it up now for us which is a very nice gesture.

formed in Australia in 2003, Airbourne is a “proper, decent” hard rock band. they borrow classic elements of the genre but play music that is valid in the 2010’s as well. the group has filled three albums with riff-heavy, classic rock songs. After releasing the latest one, Black Dog Barking, last year, they would have presented its material on the A38 but the gig had to be taken to another venue due to a flood. now they are finally taking the stage of the ship, supported by swedish band Bonafide and local act ozone mama.

eBm fans must not stay at home on this dark but truly uplifting night because it’s a must to see the band that plays industrial rock without almost any guitars! norwegian-born Andy laplegua formed Combichrist in Atlanta in 2003, the group has released seven albums so far, the latest one being this year’s aptly titled We love you. Apart from references to nine inch nails and Johnny Cash, the record’s highlight is the song from my Dead Cold hands, which is the slogan of the much-criticized national rifle Association in America.

one of the most emblematic bands of the 1990’s British electronic dance music is still active and irresistible as ever - we can make sure of that on this special event which, apart from the twentieth anniversary of the stereo mCs’ classic album Connected, also celebrates the box set Collected comprising the group’s well known and previously unreleased songs. make sure you’ll be there, and make sure you’re connected - just as it’s heard in the famous stereo mCs hit song.

even if their name doesn’t sound familiar at the first instance, you might remember Belgian band triggerfinger by covering lykke li’s i follow rivers in their own style. formed in 1998, the group is also well-known for their songs in the style of scratchy but elegant rock music, inspired by 1970’s stadium rock, but they have also been influenced by more modern bands, such as Queens of the stone Age. they released their latest album By Absence of the sun this year, and this will be their second hungarian concert this year, after appearing at the sziget festival in August.

You’ve already performed in budapest two times, do you have any special memories about those two concerts?the excitement of playing somewhere new loving the place and then being asked to come over again and again is the best. every time we are in Budapest we have the time of our lives. We have a brilliant crowd, we get great food and nice wine. it is a real treat. what drew you towards opera and how do you think the time you spent in an opera school shaped your approach to music?i guess you learn technique that stays with you...like when people learn ballet as children they always seem to have nice posture, i guess it is the same thing. you learn to get rid of ugly singing habits. for instance in the beginning when i started singing i always did a slide down on the last word of a sentence. that is really ugly, i cringe when i hear singers do that. how has the icelandic music scene changed during the years?A lot. i think now people have more chance to show off their music and there is more interest. now people go to concerts to hear a band play. in my day you had to entertain a drunken crowd with popular songs and sneak your own song in there and hope you did not get an ashtray thrown at you. i sang in restaurants a lot and hotels. when you moved back from brighton to iceland, did you feel like the country is inspiring you in a different way?i do not know as of yet...i am still getting used to being back and adjusting.

You always say that lyrics are very important for you - wouldn’t it be easier to write them in icelandic?not really. i have been speaking english since i was a child, it has been like my second language. i am ashamed to say that i am today better in english then i am in icelandic. how did turning into a mother shaped your latest album, tookah?i suddenly turned into something more. it was an amazing, crazy, overwhelming time. my inner landscape changed quite a bit and you can hear and see´ it in the record. it is important for me to make music..it is the only way to let things out for me, to get order in some way to my thoughts and emotions. my son is a big inspiration to me. he is the most creative creature that i have ever met. he is constantly in the flow. looking back at your body of work, how do you view it?i am very proud of it. for me it has been a huge schooling. i am glad to have been uncompromising with my music and doing it when i feel is right. i do not think it has been very popular for the record company to disappear after every record for a few years. i always have to start from the beginning with every record. it is not great but it is the only way for me. i am glad i have fans that stick so beautifully. You’ve already collaborated with so many artists from gusgus to Kylie minogue, is there anyone who you’ve always wanted to work together with but you haven’t had the chance yet?nick Cave. i would even just do his demos. which are your three favorite icelandic records?i do not really have favorites, they change but these four of icelandic music i seem to play the most: múm - green grass of tunnel; Ásgeir trausti: Dýrð í dauða þögn; Daniel Bjarnasson: processions; megas: Á bleikum náttkjólum.

emilíana torrini (is)

the islandic mistress with enchanting voice, emilíana torrini, performs this year only two-three times on the continent, so her show on the a38 ship will be a truly special one. Performer of the Jungle drum hit single and the famous gollam song, author and producer of Kylie minogue’s slow and former lead singer of gusgus, she answered our questions about how turning into a mother shaped her latest album, which her favourite icelandic records are and what her relation to nick cave is.

An amazing Belgian quartet and an excellent russian duo are taking us on a trippy flight on this night. the former is characterized by impressive forms, crystal clear compositions and meditative atmosphere, while the latter is wild and more improvisational with an instinctive attitude.Belgian formation perch hen Brock & rain consists of four experienced, noted musicians versed in free improvisation, contemporary music and jazz. All four members (Ab Baars, ig henneman, ingrid laubrock and tom rainey) belong to the top league of musicians and they all express themselves perfectly with the help of improvisation. originally, the band was formed when two duos merged (one comprised Baars and henneman, the other laubrock and rainey).

november oFFersWith the arrival of colder weather, we are expecting the guests of our restaurant with meals made of game, and we are looking forward to the ever-special márton-day as well.

According to popular belief, you should eat goose on this day, because “if you don’t eat goose on márton-day, you shall starve all year.” our ancestors also thought that the more they’d drink the healthier they’d be. typical dishes for the occasion are goose soup and fried goose with stewed cabbage and bun or potato dumpling. márton is also the judge of new wine. At the end of the classic márton-day goose dinner, you should clink glasses filled with mature new wine - this is called márton’s glass.

our márton-day offer:_smoked goose breast with prune/garlic jam and milk loaf_goose greaves with balmy violet onion and baguette_goose ragout soup with liver_roasted goose liver and potato roasted in its skin with rosemary and stewed quince_Confit goose leg, stewed cabbage with pears, mash potato with chives_goose liver sous-vide, with english celery mousse and vegetable/lime bulgur salad (cold salad)_goose squash with tricolor paprika_ lúdláb (goose leg) cakeA little taster from this month’s game offer_game paté with mango salsa and seared milk loaf_pheasant soup with boiled vegetables, noodles and smoked quail eggs_Deer stew in red wine with cottage cheese dumplings_Wild boar chops sous-vide, with mushroom ragout_seared “tócsni” with julien_Deer ragout filled into sweet cabbage on kouskous cabbage_Vanilla creme bulée with home-made cranberry jam

i boil the deer stew authentically tender and i serve it with salty cottage-cheese dumplings.

i make the wild boar chops sous-vide style, from freshly picked mushrooms i create a quite intensive ragout to go with it, and i serve it with pasta and potatoes.

interview 7

it’s all aboUt energY - JUlie bUdet, Yelleif you think French electonic music is only about daft Punk, cassius and Justice, you might want to re-phrase it, because even though Yelle isn’t as well-known as the aforementioned acts, the trio knows everything about how to transform the energy of joyful electro-pop into a performance you surely won’t forget. before their very fist show in hungary, Julie budet (aka Yelle) told us about her relationship to fashion, disco and her favourite songs. how did you meet and start working together?Jean-françois perrier aka grandmarnier and i met at a party more than ten years ago and we did not decide to work together, it just happened like ahah!

how will the new album be different from the previous ones?it’s been made with many collaborations and it is finally at the end, more pure and efficient! We’ve been working with American producer Dr. luke, and some amazing people in his team, we opened the circle and it was an amazing experience! the songs are spontaneous, very fresh, but still with some external vision, i think it works great. You’ve said in an interview that you are a real rock band on stage; what does it mean?it’s all about energy. We sweat a lot and play loud! which is your favourite song to perform at concerts?i think i love singing Dire qu’on va tous mourir because it’s really different from the other songs. 1’30’’ is a slow song that people don’t expect us to play live and everyone becomes really quiet. it’s cool!

miklós miltenberger miltényi’s exhibition from his latest worksthis is the third exhibition we are arranging for miklós miltenberger miltényi, one of the leading architects of the A38 ship opened in 2003.

miltényi is a narrative artist, each of his pictures tells a story. his characters are well-known to the visitors of the A38, his pictograms have been decorating the walls of the ship since opening. he has been creating works of fine art for twenty years.

A recurring participant of miltényi’s pictures is the lone hero “thrown into existence/exposed to existence”, who feels himself at home in the scariness of solitude, what’s more, he regularly likes to be funny, presents the unbearable as bearable, and so on…the figures, sometimes sketched by just a few lines, often stare back at us from concrete. they have a certain weight.

We have to imagine that sometime in the middle of november, miltenberger miltényi hands out a fallen leaf to us, which falls on our foot in the moment we try to take it, and we are surprised because we weren’t expecting it to have a weight. miltenberber miltényi then smiles from behind his curved glasses, nodding…

At the exhibition, apart from the natural concrete picture and graphics, a few book illustrations will also be displayed.

the exhibition can be attended with registration in advance, 11.00-18.00, every dayplease contact: +36 1 4643940

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
