A band that even Coldplay frontman Chris martin tweeted appreciatively about! four-piece Kensington are the current Dutch pop music success story: the band was formed in Utrecht in 2005, plays bombastic guitar pop with stadium choruses, makes cool videos to accompany their catchy hit singles, and plays sold-out concerts thanks to last year’s album rivals that topped the Dutch charts. the quartet has played in hungary before (at the 2013 sziget festival, on the holland meets hungary stage), and now they’re returning to us. support is provided by local acts hello hurricane and Brussels.

he started as a performer of electronic music, and he turned into a singer-songwriter of tender, semi-acoustic songs. his name is fin greenall aka fink, who is a popular and returning guest to hungary. As a key artist of noted electronic label ninja tune, he was a DJ/producer until he got fed up with electronic music and made a bold move in 2006. Collaborating with his faithful companions tim thornton and guy Whittaker, he has made 5 long-players so far, the latest one being 2014’s excellent hard Believer.

starting out in a noted hip hop formation and then becoming a very important pillar of hungarian electro-rock band Zagar, DJ Bootsie celebrated the tenth anniversary of his landmark solo album the silent partner on the A38 in January. in his music, hip hop is only a stepping point - the rest is totally diverse: soundtrack atmosphere, folk, jazz and contemporary music. the new album, solem Verti (the title of which means ‘being a sun, becoming a man’) is more minimalistic, electronic and cooler than his previous work.

A real cult band to enter the board of the A38 ship. it is almost unnecessary to mention how many great bands have started from se-attle, the rainy northeastern city of the UsA - earth were also founded there. in the past 25 years, their style has ranged from slow-moving drone metal through country to jazz rock. the trio are presenting their latest album primitive And Deadly, released in 2014. support comes from noise duo Black spirituals and former earth member Don mcgeevy who has teamed up with Dutch avantgarde drummer rogier smal.

one of the shiniest stars of Dutch pop is anything but unknown to hungarian audiences. every return of funk-hip-hop-soul act Kraak & smaak is a joyful event and a guarantee for an amazing dance party. they live up to their name and their core is built by founding members/producers oscar de Jong, mark Kneppers and Willem plug - they’re augmented by amazing singer Berenice and zany mC seb in concerts. they’re not only well-known in hungary and their native holland, but also internationally.

A key chapter of the past 25 years of hungarian pop/rock music belongs to Korai Öröm whose style can be best described as psychedelic-folk-metropolitan-tribal-electronic-party music. the band that has been operating in different line-ups in this quarter of a century, started out as an underground collective but they ended up on the main stage of the sziget festival. they have also played a lot of gigs abroad, and they still remain a well-known name on the international concert circuit. they released their debut cassette in 1993 and their latest album came out in 2013, exactly twenty years later. At the birthday party, support comes from psychedelic/electronic post-rock band Dirty Disco rockers, and the event will be closed by the DJ collective of the Korai crew, Korais Banditos.

if tom Waits doesn’t come over, then there’s nothing left to do but covering him. Braindogs was originally supposed to be a one-off project, but the first concert (at the A38) was so successful that it has been annually repeated ever since. the frontman of the band is englishman ian siegal who counts as one of the most acclaimed white blues-soul singers of our time. Another prominent member is Austrian singer-songwriter ripoff raskolnikov, and it’s also very important to mention the local forces: tibor Kiss and líviusz Varga are members of the highly popular hungarian band Quimby, frenk plays the drums in hiperkarma (and also has a remarkable solo career), and szabolcs nagy is perhaps the best blues pianist in the country.

Ben Klock, resident DJ of legendary Berlin club Berghain is returning to the stage of the A38. he plays minimal, but still monumental sets, and his production catalogue is also outstanding. his work is released by the most acclaimed electronic labels, thanks to his choice of playing music that sounds underground at first hearing, but those whose taste is a bit closer to the mainstream will not ignore him either. he’s been labelled as the artist who plays democratic un-derground music and who would never sell himself out. opening for Ben Klock, two amazing local DJs, isu and Dork are about to present their hypnotic sets.

taking their name from a south Korean film set in strange rooms with special atmospheres, Bin-Jip is the trio of Veronika harcsa (one of hungary’s best-known and most important female singers), excellent jazz guitar player Bálint gyémánt and creative DJ producer Andrew J. their music is modern, delicate and song-based, their working method is democratic, the instrumentation and the production work involves all three members. Bin-Jip’s first album enter came out in 2010 (not only in hungary but also in Japan), and on this night, the band is presenting their brand new long-player.

the son of legendary jazz bassist Charlie haden, spain frontman Josh haden and his band mix americana, slow monochrome rock, atmospheric indie guitar pop and some inherited jazz in an elegant and cool way. the formation, in which Josh haden remains the only founding member, reformed after a ten-year break in 2012 and has been releasing albums quite frequently since then. on this night they’re presenting their latest record sargent place, support comes from local indie-folk band band margaret island.

this night’s American and British death metalcore guests are as heavy as possible metal-wise. hailing from salt lake City, playing black, progressive and even symphonic metal, Chelsea grin recorded three albums so far (now they’re touring their latest one, Ashes to Ashes). math metal band Veil of maya started out on the remains of a nu metal group, and they are promising their fifth record for this year. further support bands Black tongue and ocean Ate Alaska are ready to prove that the British play metalcore on the same high level as the Americans.

led by incomparable Buster Bloodvessel, legendary Bad manners are a key band of classic British 2tone ska. Although the band has had numerous line-up changes and took sometimes longer, sometimes shorter breaks, they have remained active since 1976. they still count as an amazing band live, and even though there are no new songs in their setlist, legendary club anthems lip Up fatty, my girl lollypop and Can Can still remain fantastic dancefloor anthems.

he’s the guy who is said to be the most morose and speechless interviewee, yet very few musicians in the rock scene have collaborated with more artists than he has - and what artists! he was once a member of Queens Of the stone Age, but he prefers to go his own way. On february 23. Mark lanegan is returning to the A38 ship backed by his amazing band.

When he was here not so long ago, every journalist who tried to interview him came out almost empty-handed. When the Afghan Whigs came to hungary last year, frontman greg Dulli told us that during the press work for their band the gutter twins, he was the one doing all the talking, fellow member mark lanegan was just sitting next to him in complete silence. Dulli admitted that his friend may not be the most extroverted participant of the rock scene, but on one hand, he has an amazing sense of humor, and on the other, he’s a fantastic singer.

it’s a well-known fact that the singer whose voice is quite similar to tom Waits’s (a comparison he’s totally bored with) used to drive combines on the vast fields of Washington state in his twenties, but he had other career ideas and soon found himself part of seattle’s emerging grunge scene. he was a founding member of local band screaming trees which, after four indie releases, signed to a major label - around the same time as nirvana. Despite this move they remained an undergro-

und act at heart and they called it a day in 2000. By this time, lanegan had released four solo albums, and instead of fully concentrating on his own stuff, he joined Queens of the stone Age. on their 2000 al-bum rated r he counted as a kind of guest singer, but on the next record, 2002’s highly-acclaimed songs for the Deaf, he was already an official member.

After its follow-up, lullabies to paralyze he no longer belonged to the line-up but he remained on friendly terms with Josh homme & co: he guested on their latest output, like Clockwork as well.mark lanegan is also famous for his collaborations. so far he has made three albums together with former Belle And sebastian singer isobel Campbell (he claims there won’t be a fourth one), founded the above-mentioned gutter twins with greg Dulli (who says there might be a second album one day) and also worked extensively with British electronic band soulsavers. he has worked with some of the most amazing musicians of our day, too many to mention. After a bit more than two years, we have the honor to welcome him aboard the A38 ship again . he is coming to present his latest mark lanegan Band album titled phantom radio - a record that received rave reviews and showed his more upbeat side. Just like in late 2012, we can be certain that he and his band will perform and an amazing seance - it will definitely be a night to remember.

From late January until mid-February, you can visit the exhibition of musician-writer-painter drMáriás, one of the most exciting artists of the local arts scene, in the exhibition space of the A38. interview.

how should we imagine drMáriás’s Blue danube waltz? is it elegant, passionate? Absurd and grotesque?these all can be said about it. the paintings are elegant in their beauty, passionate in their perception, absurd in their situation, and they carry the imprints of a grotesque world in their message. i chose this title for the exhibition, because on one hand, it refers to the fact the exhibition space of the ship floats on the Danube. one of its walls is the river itself, thus the pictures displayed there start to dance thanks to our imagination, and waltzing with our dreams and nightmares, they’re taking on us onto new waters. on the other hand, it refers to the desired naive wonderworld, in which we definitely want to see ourselves, as the beautiful main characters of an amazing waltz, even if the truth is the total opposite of this, and we realize that at least a thousand times on an average day.

what’s the theme of the exhibition?the enjoyment of beauty and the pleasure of misunderstanding at the same time. We can see the latest pieces of an art diary, where the everyday heroes get mixed with the styles of famous artists. Burnt-out killer Charles manson gets lost in De Chirico’s metaphysical space, gábor Vona turns up at a party where he has to play the fiddle on the roof, Brezhnev discovers America for himself, pope francis receives a smartphone as a present so that he can make a call into heaven for free, a bum’s head gets jammed in the middle of piet mondrian’s vitrage, tito is canonized a freemason in hugó scheiber’s studio, trotsky looks back from the afterworld while doing yoga, george soros is searching for investment possibilities in the mártélyi national park and so on.

how long have you been working on the material of the exhibition and using what method?some of the paintings were made in the spring and in the summer,

plus this January. from early september until late December i couldn’t paint because i devoted all my time to writing a novel about painting.

You play music, you write, you paint, you edit. how do all these different creators live inside you? where does one end and where does the other start? Perhaps in a symbiosis, affecting each other? how’s your agenda, one work follows the other or life dictates it all?playing music is constantly present in my life, that is the most important valve. if we talk about playing concerts, that doesn’t only mean music, but also literature, theater, happening, performance, traveling, making friends and gaining experience in one. i paint a lot, but i suspend it if i’m writing prose, because in my alchemy lab, i can only get absorbed in only one or the other at the same time. the other things are refreshing extras in my days: writing reviews, editing, family, friends, events.

Your band tudósok has released its latest record recently. what’s next for you guys in 2015?the band is going through its amazingly vital phase, in which every concert, rehearsal, recording brings tremendous joy to everyone involved. We’d like to play as often as possible and we’d also like to get across our wild, curious, experimental and cheerfully crazy uplifting musical conception to the young people, the last remnants of which we are, and that is still as fresh, important and credible as before.

which are the last 5 achievements of art/pop culture that had a big effect on you?film: nightcrawler. Book: michel houllebecq - the map and the territory. Album: lydia lunch - retrovirus. theater play: Béla pintér - our secrets. Art: georg Baselitz retrospective exhibition in Vienna.

Your dreams, your nightmares, your secret desires?my dream is to sell more paintings than i have painted. my nightmare is that this comes true and then i lose my inspiration. therefore my secret desire is that everything should remain as it is now.

Josh haden is the son of iconic jazz bassist charlie haden, but more importantly, he is the leader of spain, a band mixing dark eroticism, heartbreaking ballads, blues, country and gospel into something truly unique. A soundtrack for blue moods, neo-noirs, broken dreams – or as Josh puts it, romantic songs about love, sex, time, death and God. in February, they’ll play their first gig in hungary, at A38. so we couldn’t resist asking Josh about his father’s legacy, the current state of the music industry and the best albums of spain.

You’ve said that spain went on a hiatus in 2001 because of the music industry. could you tell a bit more about that? how did the industry change during the years, according to you?i always think it’s funny when i hear the words “music” and “industry” in the same sentence. there is certainly an “industriousness” or “work ethic” involved when creating music. But music, which is born from heaven, and money, which represents the material, or that which is born from earth, simply cannot be reconciled. there are not enough Jay Z-s or taylor swifts to convince god otherwise.

when the rich man asked Jesus how to reach spiritual enlightenment, Jesus told the rich man to give away all his possessions. the rich man turned away disappointed, gnashing his teeth.how has the music industry changed since i was coming up in the 1990s? it hasn’t changed. there are still the wandering shamisen players. their plectrums scoop up the spirit and their coffee mugs collect the pennies. they are satisfied. And there are still the people in charge of the manufacturing and distribution of music, who more often than not see music in terms of dollar signs, who in their obsession for material wealth take advantage of the musicians. And they too are satisfied.

how the idea to return with a crowdfunded 7” record came?the idea for the Kickstarter 7” came from wanting to reconnect with fans and to find a way to create an act.

what was it like to work with Gus seyffert on sargent Place? i’ve heard that the strange instruments on the record, like the pandero drum was his idea.gus is a mad djinni. What is it like to work with a mad djinni. you give him your soul and your spirit, your creativity and your baby, temporarily, and you trust him. then he mixes everything up, according to his vision, like a sympathetic father listening to advice from the little music writers, a little apprehensive, with a smile on his face, he says “presto” and there is your creation. And it’s more beautiful than the music creators could ever imagine.

You And i is the first song on which your dad plays too. how come that he has never played on a spain record before?that is a very good question. i suppose only god could answer it.

what is your father’s bigest legacy, what did you learn from him?i can’t answer the first part of this question. i think everyone, at least everyone who is aware of beauty in the world and of them, those who have heard of my dad and his music, has a different idea of what his biggest legacy is. so i will leave the answer to them individually.

What did i learn from him. i learned how to be a good person. i learned how to laugh. i learned how to care about others, how to have compassion. i learned how to listen to music, and how to write music. i learned about the importance of giving something meaningful to the world. i learned how important it is to live every moment as if it were my last.

what do you think, with a background like yours, is it easier or harder to form a band and start writing songs?the kid of madonna, or of James Dean (if he’d had kids), i feel a little bad for them. those are legacies to struggle with. there probably isn’t a single living individual who wouldn’t recognize madonna or James Dean. those two are ingrained in mass culture. But if you were to show a picture of my dad to an average person, they wouldn’t know who he is.

there’s this great quote from the writer Charles Bukowski. he said that he was happy with what the gods gave him. A little fame, but not too much. he could make a living with his art, and people wouldn’t stop him on the street and ask for his autograph. i love that quote.

You usually say that until sargent Place, the Blue Moods of spain was the best album you’ve ever recorded. why? didn’t it feel strange that your first album was also the best?that’s just my opinion. A lot of people think she haunts my Dreams was our best album, same with i Believe and soul of spain. from my perspective Blue moods was the most pure. i went into the studio with very little experience, handed over my keys to the producer norm Kerner and what happened was like a complete all-encompassing magical and spiritual experience, like communicating with god for 24 hours a day. it was something else. i will never match that experience. so it doesn’t seem strange to me. the recording process for sargent place came pretty close to Blue moods, because norm and gus have similar personalities, probably they have the same astrological signs. i don’t know.

spain’s music has a film noir-ish quality to it, would you agree? if yes, which noir would you write a soundtrack for?i can’t agree with you, although i know what you mean. the music of film noir, if you are talking about film noir as a genre from a certain time period, is the music of Adolph Deutsch, miklos rózsa, max steiner. Composers who, by the way, my dad loved so much. my music is dark, but not “noir” dark. maybe i’m wrong. i might make a good score for a more contemporary neo-noir film like to live And Die in l.A., but i’m not sure any existing spain music is as good as Wang Chung.

“A little fame, but not too much” - Josh haden, spain
