the opening party of an exciting and fresh festival all the way from Berlin, Kreuzberg. melt! festival is the melting pot of mainstream and underground, today and tomorrow, Ber-lin electronica, hip hop, indie and folk, with a rich lifestyle cavalcade, record stores, coffee shops, design stores. this diversity is previewed by three local electronic performers, plus german electronic dance DJ/producer Kid simius, with a live act.

english DJ/producer duo stanton Warriors (comprising of Dominic Butler and mark yardley) started out from Bristol in the second half of the nineties which now can be called the golden age of Bri-tish electronica. their 2001 album the stanton session is the most successful breakbeat record of all time, and their party series with the same name reached almost every continent. they have made remixes for gorillaz, the streets, the Chemical Brothers and Daft punk, and they know what it takes to fill the dancefloor.

on the A38, we don’t only welcome fresh local talent and the hottest international acts, but also genuine legends. manfred mann’s earth Band presents an important chapter in the pop history books. the group, playing jazz, pop and prog rock as well, was formed in 1971, but mann had already had a successful outfit under his own name from 1962, with such unforgettable evergreens as 5-4-3-2-1, Doo Wah Diddy Diddy, sha-la-la, Come tomorrow, pretty flamingo or mighty Quinn. the earth Band has seen several line-up changes in the past forty-plus years, but now mann & co are returning to the city where they recorded their memorable concert album in 1984.

on the international roma Day, we can welcome aboard the A38 a sort of supergroup comprising of members of four noted roma bands: ro-mano Drom, szilvási gipsy folk Band, Andro Drom and ternipe. of course the 12 musicians will play songs from the repertoires of their own bands. the songs of the setlist have been rearranged by the leader of romano Drom, An-tal Kovács. the performance will be augmented by dancers on the stage, and projections of pictures will add to the atmosphere as well.

prog rock heaven and a double anniversary on the A38! ten years after their first perfor-mance on the ship, we can welcome Arena aboard again - a band that has had several line-up changes and a number of albums, the first of which was released in 1995. the pink floyd style quintet are coming to present their latest long-player the Unique sky (released just a few weeks ago) to their devoted fans.

french and Canadian, boy and girl, nomadic and post-rock and global music - this is Vialka, with two special musicians and personalities: musician/photographer/performer eric Boros with a unique guitar playing technique, and dancer-drummer-architect marylise frecheville, respectively. they don’t only mix styles (folk songs and blues, couplets and free jazz, psychedelic rock and chansons), but while they’re on the road, they like to perform in special venues. on this night, their opening act is local band fauno pera, also playing very unique psychedelic music.

singer-songwriter Victoria hesketh borrowed her pseudonym litt-le Boots from Caligula, but she is a lot more likeable than the late emperor. since 2009 she counts as one of the most popular english female singer-songwriters, playing danceable electro-pop - not in an over-commercialized mainstream style, but in a unique and very personal way. this is her third visit to hungary: first she came here as a DJ, then she performed at the sziget festival, so the A38 gig will be her first real club concert in our country. she’s planning to release a new album this year, so we can surely expect a couple of new tunes we haven’t heard before.

ten years after their first A38 show, new york hardcore veterans sick of it All are returning to the ship. formed nearly thirty years ago, they’ve been led by the Koller brothers lou (vocals) and pete (guitar), augmented by also long-time members Craig setari (bass) and Ar-mand majidi (drums). they’ve released 11 long-players so far, the latest one being 2014’s the last Act of Defiance. on the concert, you can expect several tracks from this output, but nothing can prevent the band from playing some old hC classics either.

the A38 ship celebrates her 12th birthday with a bunch of three concerts. from 20:00, emblematic local indie band the moog turns up the amplifiers on the roof terrace, followed by the danceable indie hits of tesco Disco (this program is free of charge from 22:00). in the Concert hall, Quimby and söndörgő (the latter playing energetic Balkan folk) are performing - concert + dinner tickets are available for this program. Closing the night, also in the Concert hall, Dutch electronic act secret Cinema & egbert take care of filling the dancefloor from midnight. the concerts are separate programs, they can be attended with tickets bought separately

the first person singular name isn’t wrong: Against me! was formed as a one-man anarchist punk project in 1997, in gainsville, florida. it soon grew into a four-piece and became an important participant of the punk scene, and has released several albums, each followed by extensive touring. founding frontman tom gabel went through a sex change in 2012, and since then he’s been performing as laura Jane grace. their latest long-player, released last year, reflects this event in its title: transgender Dysphoria Blues.

palya Bea

After her hugely successful album launch gig last year, Bea palya is ready to enchant us aboard the A38 ship again. this time - basing her program around her popular al-bum of 2014, nŐ (in english: Woman) - she presents us her latest experiences, feelings and inspirations. And to make the event even more complete, we are offering you a two-course meal which can be bought with the concert ticket.

one of the most exciting new performers of local contemporary pop is eszter polyák aka naked Woods. canadian musician Owen pallett has made string arrangements for the likes of arcade Fire, the national, robbie williams, duran duran and Franz Ferdinand among others, been nominated for an Oscar and released some amazing solo work. Before his upcoming concert on the a38, he replied to our questions via email.

in an interview, you mentioned that you’ve been composing music on computer since you were a little kid. so the violin wasn’t the first step for you towards music?Violin was, i started playing when i was three. On your newest album, in conflict, you moved from sci-fi- and rpG-based lyrics to more autobiographical themes. what triggered this change?no reason specifically… but the shift wasn’t that enormous. A fantasy setting was just a way of fudging details. now i can’t fudge the details. You recorded in conflict with a band. why?i was asked to perform heartland in its entirety and in order to do so i needed a band. i got one together and we had so much fun playing those songs we decided to make the new record together. You’ve also said that for you, in conflict is not a form of self-help, you made it with very specific intentions. what were those intentions?in a phrase, it’s “a hand outstretched”. i hope that people might hear their own experiences in my candour. You are very active online and you’ve also said that the feedback you get there helps you shape your next album. what were the reactions to in conflict?Very positive in the queer community, i got a lot of private notes of positivity. it was more bemusedly received in the mainstream press. A lotta magazines don’t want to go to bat for the queer shit. ted Giola’s article in the daily Beast (Music criticism has degenerated into lifestyle reporting), where he argued that it’s a shame that nobody writes about stuff like song structures,

arrangement techniques or harmony in reviews sparked heavy discussions. why do you think it happened so, what was in the article that was so controversial?the article was classist and not representative of the way that people digest music. people don’t need music lessons to appreciate pop, jazz, classical. And pinning a perceived degradation of musical quality on “ignorance of theory” is a sublimation of one’s own personal taste onto other people’s responsibility. furthermore, music theory discussions are generally boring. chilly Gonzales also has a „pop music masterclass”, where he talks about why famous pop songs work so well. do you think that you approach/think about these songs in a different way?Chilly is an amazing pianist. have you heard his solo piano albums? i love them and i buy them for all my relatives every Christmas. You’ve said that the video for the riverbed is about your fear of stagnating financially in your 50s and 60s. You write film scores, orchestral parts for bands like arcade Fire, and you have a successful solo career, yet you’re still pessimistic about your and the music industry’s future?i’m worried about the future, but also the present. i sell enough tickets to survive, for now. But i have to follow the money. i don’t have a secret stash of dollars, i work hard to stay in the black. For which director’s film you would like to write a soundtrack?luca guadagnino is my favourite these days, i’m really hoping we can work on something together soon. You’ve also worked with caribou’s daphni-alterego on two tracks (Julia, tiberius). are you into club music?interestingly enough, yeah, but not because i like to dance. i do dance but pretty unspectacularly. i am more into the emotionally barrenness of club music, it feels like immersing oneself in a pool. Dan snaith has been cool to work with, seeing just how stripped-down the approach needs to be to make the club tracks work. i hope we can work a lot more together.

“Music theory discussions are generally boring”

sprinG OFFersApril’s here, which means that spring has finally and undeniably arrived. As the weather is turning pleasant, we can have lunch on the sunlit terrace of the A38 ship at noon or in the early afternoon. We can also have a coffee or taste the dessert wonders of the A38 restaurant. everybody’s warmly welcome!

in the sunny spring weather we prefer to eat lighter dishes, therefore it can be a great idea to choose one of the favorites on our fresh spring menu: the gambas pil-pil (hot shrimp with tomatoes). if you long for richer food, you can choose the sous Vide chicken breast on italian risotto with gorgonzola.

if you have a sweet tooth, try our raspberry cake which we serve with mascapone mousse, and it can also accompany a glass of rosé very well.

in April, we are starting to work out and fine draw our next monthly selection. our new offer will be a more mediterranean type of selection, which will include dishes made in italian and spanish style.

We recommend a combined concert+dinner ticket for the palya Bea concerts on April 17 and 18. it includes the following dishes:

Mediterranean tomato soup with mozzarella beads

Sous Vide chicken breast on Italian risotto with gorgonzola

if there are transgender rock stars, the frontwoman of against Me!, lau-ra Jane Grace is surely one of them. the band will rock the boat on april 16, but before that, laura took her time and answered our questions. whose reaction surprised you the most when you came out?i’m not sure „surprised” is the right word, more like „humbled.” i couldn’t believe, i still can’t believe the amount of support i’ve received from both friends, family and fans. what does femininity mean to you? would you consider yourself a feminist?i don’t have an answer to that question, „what does femininity mean to you”, it’s too abstract. But of course i consider myself a feminist. i hope you do as well! Most of transgender dysphoria Blues’ lyrics are centered around suicide, dysphoria, transgender people – but all of them are written in second or third person. did you intentionally try to keep a distance? All of the experiences on the album are autobiographical. sometimes it’s just easier to project those experiences onto a made up character. i needed the distance, especially when i first started writing. i was terrified by what i was coming up with. did your usual songwriting process also change with this album? what was it like to work with Fat Mike?there wasn’t any real change to the process. most of the time i start with the lyrics and then put the words to music on an acoustic guitar,

then bring it to the band. that’s never really changed. getting fat mike involved was a lot of fun and i really appreciate him being involved, playing on the album and letting us use his studio for some of the recording. mike’s always been a friend to me. You’ve said in an interview, that one of the things that attracted you to the punk scene was the idea of smashing gender roles. which was interesting for me, as many people view the scene as a very masculine thing. who were your punk icons, back in the day?the punk bands that really shaped my politics and attracted me to punk rock as a realistic force for change in the world, something more than just music, were bands like Crass, poison girls, the mob, health hazard, Doom, Destroy, Civil Disobedience, Bikini Kill, Contropotere, Chumbawamba, the Clash, Billy Bragg, scum of toytown, team Dresch, the Apostles and so many more. All those bands spoke messages of equality and inclusion, thinking for yourself and about punk rock not just being a microcosm mirror image of mainstream society. sure, there are some punk bands that aren’t about those things, but let’s not let them ruin it for everyone else.

lászló felugossy creates with the neverending experimental desire of the figures of Bouvard and péchucet conceived memorably by flaubert. he researches playfully in his workshop in sárospatak, just like the really great explorers. it is worth noting that he does all this with a self reflexion that includes a good amount of humor as well, which wasn’t too typical of the novel’s heroes.

the accidental, the temporary impression is included in all his compositions. he composes the incidental into and he expels the intentional out of his paintings, objects, photos, videos, lyrics, performances. the occasional things find their unique and one-off places in his works. felugossy constantly writes the world apart, and thus creates a new one, which is unrepeatable and distinctive.

on one of the works at the exhibition, we can see laca’s shoes, among them cheap bracelets and a crossed-out caption saying home-ost-asis.

homeostasis means similar condition in greek; in life studies it is a concept that is used for the dynamic constancy of the inner environment. the second hand shoe, just like an antique death mask, or life mask, is a completed form. it lacks its wearer, yet it’s still present.

At the exhibition titled the last Buffalo (didn’t win!), we present a slice of the artist’s moderately gloomy, or sometimes (if not always) cheerful moods, we show something from the thought-provoking is/isn’t condition, which currently transpierces the now 68-year-old artist (the last buffalo): “how do i change or how do i change less?”, as he puts it.

the exhibition can be attended with registration in advance, 11.00-18.00, every dayplease contact: +36 1 4643940

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
