A2D architecture is committed to bringing contemporary and unique solutions to every project, providing innovative architectural design to residential, workplace, industrial and retail sectors. We not only see designs through from concept to execution, but also pride ourselves on adding an extra ingredient that turns an average project into a great project.

Founded in 2005, the practice draws on experience from a wide variety of past projects of differing scales and in many different sectors such as : corporate office, aviation, financial services, hospitality, residential, sporting facilities, telecommunications, government, printing plants, multi-storey car parking, master planning, shopping centre design, trade fairs, interior design, landscape design, furniture design, product design & graphic design.

Our career client lists include :ABN AMRO Bank, Arthur Andersen, AOL, Bovis Lendlease, Cakefriends, Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, Eurotel, Fraport, FROS, Global Center, Le Cro, Lehman Brothers, Mercers, Nike, Nokia, P2 Group, PRICOA, Risers, Sixt Car Rental, Springfield & Time Warner. We are particularly proud to be working with Nokia, nominated as their Master Design Agency for Europe and Eurasia & helping them over the last 6 years to execute over 200 different retail installations throughout most of Europe as well as India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Dubai and the United States. In 2007 we were also invited to help undertake a major refurbishment of the NOKIA UK Headquarters, including reception, all communal spaces, meeting rooms and restaurant, completed in December 2008.

P2 Group, a manufacturing company based in the Netherlands with branch offices in each continent, commissioned us to design 2,000 m2 of office, showroom space and their own indoor lake & island in their grade II listed Headquarters.

Over the years we have also had considerable experience in the residential market, receiving commissions from Germany, The Netherlands and the UK, ranging from private interior refurbishments up to large scale mixed use developments.

We take delight in smaller projects such as the glass and steel mezzanine in a London loft, where a motorised steel staircase transforms an office into a bedroom. With an equal measure of focus, we have worked on brand new shopping centers and their infrastructures across Europe. Both ends of the scale have greatly contributed to our knowledge base.Extensive working outside of the UK has led A2D architecture to strong relationships with other architects, interior designers, industrial designers, graphic design agencies, project managers, engineers and contractors, whom we can rely on.

A2D architecture can provide a flexible, tailor-made service for private clients, local businesses and multi-national companies, offering a consistent & dedicated single point of contact from inception to completion, whatever location. All our projects are treated with the highest level of attention to detail – a trait that has become our trademark.

Company ProfileFeasibility After detailed study, analysis of the project requirements and discussions with the client, develop a strategic brief. Identify any constraints within any given building or site. Assist the client in selecting an appropriate building by evaluating the building’s performance criteria to determine its appropriateness for development. Provide analysis of existing space efficiencies for any proposed renovation/relocation work. Identification of procedures, organisation, structure and range of consultants to be engaged for the project.

Design DevelopmentTo create a suitable range of design concept options and develop preliminary feasibility drawings to illustrate spatial relationships and functional requirements. Advise on key building planning and design features, e.g. vertical circulation, structure and building modules, building security and electrical and mechanical systems. Advise on any necessary applications for statutory approvals and review procurement route.

Construction DocumentationProvide working drawings, specifications and other documents necessary for the tender and subsequent construction of the space or building. A CAD database will be formed digitally documenting all existing and eventually ‘as built’ drawings for information purposes.

Services during ConstructionAssist in the tender process and negotiating the construction contract, report on progress against programme and monitor quality; check co-ordination of schedules and review shop drawings for conformance with design intent package and prepare snagging list. Assist the client to make informed decisions at each key stage of the building programme.

Design Standards DevelopmentDevelop tailor-made standards guidelines for acquiring, planning and managing spaces for now and in the future, considering a client’s individual requirements.

Graphic DesignDevelop a corporate identity, signage system, package and exhibit design, web design and other print materials, e.g. stationery, business cards etc.

Landscape ArchitectureDesign sustainable & environmentally considered solutions, congruent with the built works, enhancing site value and performance, whilst sympathetic to existing features, natural habitat and legislation. Define usage, possible traffic type and routing, access and safety, whilst compiling a longer term strategic brief encompassing other potential future uses and maintenance issues.

Master PlanningDevelop plans for long-range growth based on anticipated future requirements for land, buildings and related facilities.

Product DesignCreate concepts for industrial products on the basis of a marketing brief; develop detailed design through drawings and models as the base of the manufacturers’ own engineering development; assist in the evaluation of mock-ups and pre-production prototypes; assist in the marketing and product launch.

Woollen Residence

The Woollen Residence is a complete refurbishment of an existing 4-bedroom house in Royal Tunbridge Wells. Closely following the client’s desire for modern open-plan living and the adoration & respect for the celebrated modernist architect, Richard Neutra (1892-1970), the solution maximises living space and enhances the visual connection to the external landscaping and separate modernist garage / sculpture studio.

Maddison Residence

The Maddison Residence is a modern, refurbishment of an Edwardian house in a conservation area in central Sevenoaks. Originally built in 1905, the house has a clear & deliberate contrast of styles outside and inside. The kitchen, living and dining rooms have been opened up to form one large open-plan layout and bathrooms repositioned and upgraded. Period details have been replaced by simple modern lines, whilst full-height mirrors dramatically increase the illusion of space. Complete with classic 1920s furniture and commercial-style lighting, the project reflects the modern ideals of its occupiers whilst respecting the otherwise traditional streetscape.

Howie Residence

The Howie Residence is the transformation of a narrow, double-height ancillary space adjoining a 2-bedroom loft apartment in Bermondsey, London. The solution combines guest bedroom, study and relaxing area in one. The steel staircase, which leads to a glass-floor mezzanine covered in oversized cushions and view of a 46” wall-mounted flat-screen TV, is hinged at the top and can be hoisted up by an electric motor enabling enough room for a concealed closet bed to be pulled down. Interestingly the increase in property value having an additional and (most importantly) legal 3rd bedroom more than covered the cost of the installation.

Maddison Residence II

The Maddison Residence II project is a fully refurbished 4-bedroom house in a conservation area in central Sevenoaks, close to Sevenoaks Station. The house has undergone a complete make-over, replacing windows, knocking down walls and Phase II of the project is to sub-divide the plot and build a separate 2-storey, 4-bedroom house with separate driveway and garage. The new project will be inspired in form by the modernist architects of the early twentieth century, whilst surpassing the current building regulations with an aim to be carbon-neutral. Internally the rooms are arranged in such a way to be simple yet highly efficient, whilst maximising natural daylight and views over mature gardens.

Sandle Residence

The Sandle Residence is a new 100m2 extension of an existing family home, built in ca. 1850. The solution incorporates a large over-hanging, green roof over a full-width open-plan lounge, dining area and playroom. With separate first floor guest facilities and adjacent garage and store rooms, the project satisfies all of the client’s spatial requirements. A fully-glazed rear façade enjoys uninterrupted views over the mature garden, whilst a continuous strip of glazed roof lights floods into the heart of the building and respects the division between the old and the new.

Nokia

A2D architecture is proud to be appointed as the Nokia Master Design Agency for Europe and Eurasia. Working since 2005 on over 200 Nokia Stores in 22 different countries, A2D have assisted Nokia on new concept development, marketing displays, trade fairs and UK headquarter design. We have also written the Nokia Store and Nokia Care Design Standards Manual on how to build a store or care point. Nokia either host or enter several large trade fairs every year. A2D have helped design some of the most prominent ones, including 3GSM in Barcelona, CeBIT in Hannover and the inaugural World Retail Congress in Barcelona. A2D continue to design Nokia stores throughout Europe and Eurasia, most prominently in Italy, Russia and Turkey, where Nokia are keen to establish and maintain a firm foothold in market share and customer experience.

Nike

Nike is the world’s leading supplier of athletic shoes and clothing. Immediately prior to founding A2D architecture, Darren worked as in-house architect in the European Headquarters in Hilversum, near Amsterdam. During this time there were 60 projects in 5 different store concepts for shopping centers and high streets all over Europe. The strength of the Nike Retail concept lies within clear, simple, functional furniture placed within instantly recognisable gender-specific layouts. A bold entrance portal and deep suspended ceilings signify the customer’s transcendence into a Nike-branded world, full of heritage, where large images of Nike-sponsored athletes adorn the walls and sporting success is “in the air”.

BDP

BDP is a large interdisciplinary practice of over 900 architects, interior designers, engineers and urbanists, based in studios all around the world and with experience in all major building sectors. Prior to founding A2D both Darren and Olivia worked in BDP’s largest UK office, London. Our projects at that time included major extensions, refurbishments and brand new shopping centers through UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Beirut and Germany (often mixed development projects with major changes to road infrastructures). Working in medium to large size teams our roles included concept & feasibility studies, master planning, preparing detailed design packages and construction drawing sets.

Nokia

In 2008 Nokia underwent a major refurbishment of their UK Headquarters in Southwood, nr. Farnborough, UK. A2D re-designed all communal areas, including reception, concierge, atrium, café, lounge, restaurant and meeting rooms. The design included : a Nokia Flagship retail installation; a circular reception desk made from black and white corian; bespoke meeting tables and benches; 2 enormous suspended light sculptures in the quadruple height atrium (previously part of the Nokia-sponsored Regent Street Christmas Lights); previously land-locked meeting rooms converted into a Media Lounge; and the refurbishment of an existing café and restaurant. The building was awarded Gold certification under LEED CI 2.0, one of the first ever in UK in this category.

Corporate Offices

Prior to founding A2D both Darren and Olivia worked with some major corporate brands, designing their office environments. Typical projects would include bespoke receptions, meeting rooms, tea points, canteens, copy centers, toilets, as well as office layouts. Each project required detailed questionnaires, benchmarking, adjacency analysis, as well as corporate identity related materials selection and furniture specifications. Wherever possible new ways of working policies would be applied, creating hot desking, satellite working and flexible environments.

The P2 Group is a manufacturing company, based in the Netherlands, China and USA, specialising in custom retail fixturing and POS solutions. Their clients include global brands such as Barclays, Honda, Nike, Miele and Nokia. A2D were invited to redesign part of their Dutch Headquarters. Housed in a former bulb warehouse in an Amsterdam School style (J. Zietstra 1928), our solution incorporates open-plan office space, customer showrooms and meeting rooms all around the perimeter of an indoor lake. Four oversized, hollow, suspended “beehives” delineate and illuminate the office area, whilst allowing free movement in between. The glass and steel showrooms are designed to be flexible frameworks of raised floors and suspended ceiling grids to accommodate any possible retail interior design. The meeting room has 3 walls of full-height polarized glass, which can be turned opaque at the flick of a switch. The central feature is an indoor lake with its own island of palm trees and mini waterfall, placed directly under a massive 8 x 8m rooflight.

The Art Fund Pavilion architecture competition requested a design for a new, free-standing exhibition space for pieces of art, whilst also offering possibilities for party and lecture spaces for 30 or more people. Set within a strict area schedule, the pavilion must be constructed in a modular system, able to be easily deconstructed and moved elsewhere. After a brief exhibition tour, the proposed pavilion is to be sited directly adjacent to the Lightbox Art Gallery in Woking. Our solution is Oculus, the Latin word for eye, and is designed to be a uniform backdrop and means to viewing the arts, whether 2D or 3D pieces or performance. Oculus is a continuous occupied wall, featuring stairs and upper gallery and retractable seating and sun canopies.

The competition organised by Arquitectum is set on a piece of land adjacent to the Museum of Contemporary Art by Richard Meier (1995) in the Gothic Quarter part of central Barcelona. Its purpose is to provide a new youth hostel for bohemian travellers and a new interruption on Barcelona’s skyline. Our solution is Bohome, a 100m tall glass and steel tower, containing 50 individual accommodation pods, suspended in animation. Each pod, although linked to its neighbour, maintains its own sense of identity and space and has commanding views of the city.

Close the Gap

The challenge in the international competition to ‘Close the Gap’ of the East Coast Greenway, New York, is not just an exercise to complete an existing transport circuit, but also an opportunity to create a destination rather than a transition.

The key goals of our proposal are : 1. Create a safe and quick way to commute to and from work. 2. Create a place for recreational use and exercise. 3. Reduce pollution and congestion in the city. 4. Create a facility for everyone - young and old, infirm and able-bodied. 5. Create a platform to encourage local enterprise and employment.

6. Promote and educate visitors on alternative transport and low energy solutions. 7. Build in flexibility to accommodate future alternative transport solutions. 8. Improve and extend the rest of the Greenway to the same high standards. 9. Create excitement and pleasure through good design. 10. Create a world class example of how well these goals can be met.
