AN ASSESSMENT BY HARRY CUNNINGHAM
Moving Up
Media Institutions
Documentary films do not need huge budgetsoften a very good way to tell a story. Anyone
can do itEXAMPLES: MICHAEL MOORE (Fahrenheit
9/11) and the maker of SUPERSIZE ME, Morgan Spurlock. Have both risen to prominence through using the documentary method of story telling
Low budget - More freedom when creating film
Genre
Documentary films go a long way back in history
Grierson – famous for documentary films in the 1930s (Royal Mail train)
Become popular with the rise of mass popular culture from the 1930s onwards.
Interest in ordinary/normal peoples’ lives and experiences continues to this day.
Representation
Offer an opportunity for film-makers to challenge worn out stereotypes.
This is something I attempted to make happen with my project.
Look at a sport that is well known from different view
Audience
The demographic I am attempting to target is:The core audience of males, 16 – 40Readers of newspapers like the Sun, the
Mirror, and other ‘red tops.’Sky Sports fansPeople that are more likely to shop at
Morrison's rather than marks and Spencer'sHow would you use this knowledge to create
an effective marketing strategy
Ideology
Many documentary film makers often come from a left/liberal background.
They attempt to tell the story of the ‘underdog’ or those without a voice.
Shows how odds are stacked against our footballer – loads of young peoples dream is to become a footballer
Narrative
The Hollywood Formula – the hero emerges from the cave
Given a challengeOvercomes obstacles to win the prize. My main character is well on his way to success
– just the beginning I started with the line ‘I have just signed my first
Pro’ further on in the trailer I showed another
player talking about whether harry could make it or not
