Dog-diggity, it’s a dog washAnd a way to ind them good homes
Photos by Lucie R. Willsie | The News
Not too happy about getting a bath by a volunteer at Satur-day’s dog wash and pet adoption event, Scrappy is just one of around 30 animals normally available for adoption at the Carolina Canine Rescue group. Over the past four years or so, founder of the non-proit, Melanie Morrison, has helped adopt around 3,000 animals.
A second pet adoption group also was at Saturday’s Carolina Canine Rescue dog wash and pet adoption. The group, Save A Mutt Kennel from Ararat, Va., adopts out both dogs and cats and can be reached at 276-698-2956, at [email protected], or at www.saveamuttkennel-va.info. Both organiza-tions not only can always use donations of money, pet food and miscellaneous items, such as towels, crates and bowls, they both also always need more volunteers and foster homes.
This little one just came into the Carolina Canine Rescue pro-gram and doesn’t even have a name yet, said volunteer Adri-enne Deir. In fact, it is the irst time on a leash and the irst time being brushed.
Mom, Brenda Denny, in back, from Mount Airy, and daughter, Staci Fowlkes, stopped by the pet adoption event Saturday while out shopping. Mom said the family has adopted three rescue dogs already and currently might be interested in an-other, but only if it’s a Great Dane.
Bryson Shelton, 2 1/2, was going to be able to take home Bootsy, a border collie and blue heeler mix from the Carolina Canine Rescue pet adoption event Saturday. “I wanted him to grow up with a puppy,” said his mom, Tonya.
In addition to pet adoptions, dog washes were ofered at the recent Carolina Canine Rescue event in front of Petsense.
Sadie, an 11-month-old Bassett hound and lab mix, isn’t real happy about getting a bath at Saturday’s Carolina Canine Rescue event, but “she’s a good girl,” one of the volunteers said and is dealing with it as gracefully as she can.
Sadie is an 11-month-old Bassett hound and lab mix.
But even Sadie has her limits and is ready to get out of the tub as soon as possible.
Jett is a rare dog breed, said “mom” Stephanie (Key) Burris from Mount Airy. He is a lat-coat retriever. For more pictures, see WASH | Page 4
4 SURRY SCENE Thursday, July 11, 2013
For a 100-pound dog, Jett is quite calm and easy to bathe.
Jett may like being given a bath more than most dogs be-cause he is known as one of the most outstanding water dogs there is, according to his “mom,” Stephanie (Key) Burris from Mount Airy. “He loves the water,” Burris said. Burris attend-ed the Carolina Canine Rescue’s dog wash and pet adoption to support the organization and its work, which “is a good cause,” she said.
And after the bath, everyone gets a little shower.
Sue Z also seems to enjoy getting a bath, looking very much like a lady being attended by her court.
Dakota, however, is not so keen on getting a bath, said “dad” Roger Barr. That’s why he brought his Shar Pei to the dog wash Saturday. Just mention the word bath, Barr said, and Dakota is running out the back door.
Despite his protests, the volunteers from the Carolina Canine Rescue organization, together with Dakota’s “dad,” got the job done. “It went about as well as I thought it would,” said “dad” Roger Barr.
Hannah Kilby, 13, and her mom Lisa have been looking for a white cat for quite some time now. They inally adopted one at Satur-day’s Carolina Canine Rescue pet adoption and dog wash. Melanie Morrison, founder of the non-proit organization Carolina Canine Rescue, held this in front of Petsense Sat-urday. Her group ofers a low-cost spaying and neutering program, a puppy adoption program with free spaying for the puppy mom, as well as assistance with pet adop-tion. This organization is always looking not only for donations of money, pet food, and miscellaneous items, such as towels ,crates and bowls, but also in need of volunteers and foster homes. CCR can be reached at 786-5256, [email protected], or www.carolinacaninerescuenc.com.

Educational Opportunity Center hosts SCC tour for GED studentsStaf Report
DOBSON — General Education Development (GED) students from across Surry and Yadkin counties were introduced to the Surry Com-munity College campus recently with a campus tour along with in-formation about how to continue their education at SCC.
GED students from The Learning Center in Dobson, The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain, The Elkin Center in Elkin, The Jones Resource Cen-ter in Mount Airy, and The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville attended the event, which was hosted by the Edu-cational Opportunity Center.
Fifty-four students participated in the annual event and received information on college enroll-ment, a spring tour of SCC’s beau-tiful campus, door prizes donated by Wal-Mart, and a delicious lunch at the Knight’s Grill. The students also completed practice admission applications.
“The tour is beneficial to Surry Community College because it is our goal to enroll these GED students in college upon completion of their GED,” said Kasey Martin, Coordina-tor of the Educational Opportunity Center. “By providing the tour, we hope that students, who may oth-erwise be intimidated by a college campus, will see how friendly we are at SCC and how easy we can make the transition for them from GED student to college student.”
The Educational Opportunity Cen-ter provides assistance for transition-ing students who have been in the
GED environment and now want to go college. Martin provides weekly workshops to GED students at each of SCC’s locations.
“During these workshops, I provide information on admissions, financial aid, how to choose a career, personal-ity testing, and the programs offered at SCC. “By providing the tour, stu-dents get to visit the campus, meet some of the wonderful staff, and see where and how all of the things we discuss take place.”
Martin sums up entry from GED
to college enrollment in eight steps: 1) Earn your GED; 2) Determine what you would like to be when you grow up; 3) Choose a program of study; 4) Apply for admissions; 5) Request transcripts; 6) Apply for fi-nancial aid; 7) Complete the place-ment test; and 8) Enroll.
Persons with more questions on the program may contact Martin at (336) 648-0652, (336) 386-3668 or [email protected] or go to www.surryeoc.org for more information.

Pilot Mountain native helps disaster victims
Master Chief Joey Hundley from Pilot Mountain is a member of the crew of the USS Oklahoma City who recently hosted a blood drive to help folks who might be injured in a natural disaster.
The crew of this Los Angeles-class, fast attack submarine (SSN 723) host-ed the blood drive on June 14 in tribute to those who were injured in the recent Oklahoma City tornadoes.
Since the natural disaster in their name-sake city, the submarine crew had been pining for a chance to help with relief efforts. Although the submarine is more than 7,000 miles away from Oklahoma City, the crew organized and executed a blood drive as a way to show they cared.
“The Oklahoma City folks are in our prayers,” said Joey Hundley, the subma-
rine’s chief of the boat (COB) and master chief electronic technican (SS). “While we’re not there physically, we wanted to find a way to support in any way we could. Everyone on the submarine wanted to give blood when they heard there was a chance to help … Everyone on the subma-rine watched the news about the tornado in Oklahoma City. Even though we’re far away, I feel we have a connection with the city … Ultimately, we want to support the community, whether it’s the community in Guam, the military community, or the communities back home, including our namesake city in Oklahoma.”
Hundley is the son of Patricia Reddic and the grandson of the late Carlos and Evelyn Hundley.

The theme was Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory complete with whimsical backdrops created by the creative activities students. The sign language class, sporting green hair, signed tunes and narra-tive for students and their families, as well as SCC faculty and staff.
The early childhood degree pro-gram’s goal is to prepare students for careers in child care centers, develop-ment day programs and public schools. Coursework includes child develop-
ment, the physical and nutritional needs of children, care and guidance of children, and communication skills. The Surry program was accredited by the National Association for the Edu-cation of Young Children in 2011.
Many of the program graduates transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree with partner institutions: Lees-McRae, Winston Salem State University and UNC-G. Lees-McRae will be adding a Birth to Kindergarten program at Sur-ry for the 2013-14 school year.
Mary Olvera, lead instructor for the Early Childhood program, not-ed that the first few years are most critical for preparing children for learning. She is proud of Surry’s program and sends students out with confidence to make a differ-ence in the lives of young children.

Every student at Mountain Park Elementary recently produced their own multi-media presentations. The presentations were preceded by planning, research, experiments, and learning new computer skills. Students later invited their parents to come to school and view their inished products. Ambassador Scholars program honors studentsStaf Report
DOBSON —The Surry Community College Ambassa-dor Scholars program has recognized students who serve as public relations representatives hosting visitors, con-ducting tours, supporting special events and setting an example for Surry students.
The Ambassadors program was established in 1993 by the SCC Foundation. Ambassadors for the 2012-13 year who graduated in May were:
- Olivia McAuley, a fifth year Surry Early College student who came to the program from the Surry County School Sys-tem. She was inspired when her sister’s class of early college students came to her middle school to explain the early col-lege concept. As ambassador, Olivia enjoyed the opportunity to speak to Elkin High School students about Surry Com-munity College and its programs. She will transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill entering as a freshman with junior class status majoring in physics with a concentration in astronomy;
- Norma Goins, who came to Surry as the result of a lo-cal textile mill closing, where she had worked for 22 years. A Surry representative met with the employees who were losing their jobs and presented educational opportuni-ties. Norma regards that meeting as the rainbow after the storm. She particularly enjoyed conducting campus tours during the Advanced Manufacturing Day event. Norma hopes to reenter the workforce in the field of education;
- Sommer McHone, a graduate of Mount Airy High School, who followed in the footsteps of her mom as a Surry student. She saw benefit in the scholarship pro-gram and her ability to maintain her part-time job while attending school. Sommer especially appreciated the op-portunity to speak with Mount Airy High School students and their advisors regarding her experience at Surry and the advantages Surry affords. She will transfer to Appala-chian State University where she will pursue a degree in Hospitality Management and Tourism;
- Jamison Boles, a graduate of Starmount High School, who said he knew little about community colleges as he began choosing his educational path but his dad was an advocate. He has learned that Surry is a great place to begin your college education and establish a firm founda-tion for the future. He shared that he has been inspired through his work with Continuing Education students and hopes that more students will take advantage of the programming provided at the college’s Yadkin Center lo-cated in Yadkinville. He has been accepted at Appalachian State University and Winston-Salem State University. He plans to pursue a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science to prepare for a career in medical testing;
- Rubi Ocampo took a year off after graduating from For-bush High School. She had heard positive comments about Surry’s faculty and staff who work hard to create a great at-mosphere for learning by offering guidance and support. She has been active in the Student Government Association and enjoyed working with the campus voter registration initia-tive. She was especially appreciative for the opportunity the ambassadors had to meet informally with college President Dr. David Shockley, to discuss his vision for Surry. Rubi will transfer to Western Carolina University or Gardner Webb University to pursue a human services degree;
- Scott Wilson, an advisor for the Ambassadors program, applauded the ambassadors on their leadership develop-ment, faithful service, top notch performance, cooperative spirit and the amazing fact that the group had perfect at-tendance for ambassador events. In addition, Wilson noted that the Ambassadors have supported high school student programs focused on career planning, Surry’s Advanced Manufacturing Day, the Yadkin Center 10th Anniversary celebration, planning for enhanced student services, and the registration process including spring semester student orientation. The 2012-13 Surry Ambassador Scholars have been invaluable to the college serving as advocates for fu-ture generations of Surry students.

Piney Grove holds country fairThe Piney Grove Baptist
Church created a country fair during its Vacation Bi-ble School this year.
“You really felt like being at the country fair,” said Nor-ma Sprinkle of the church.
The sanctuary looked like a big tent, like a red a white background. A 14-foot Ferris wheel, with six seats filled with large stuffed animals, surprised all in attendance when it actually spun around. Craig and Norma Sprinkle, mem-bers of the church, created the working Ferris wheel.
A large balloon was set up for all the children to enjoy.
Brother Hood served grilled hot dogs and ham-burgers with all the trim-mings. Snow cones were also available.
“The children will re-member this Vacation Bible School for a long time to come,” she said,.
Every Sunday School class provided the meal each night.
Many worked on this year’s project, including Gay Riggan, Vacation Bible School director, Mark Reece Jr., pastor, the teachers and all who helped decorate.

Staf Report
DOBSON — Surry Community College Com-puter Information Technol-ogy sophomores worked on interactive projects during the spring semes-ter which were showcased during the Special Projects Expo recently. The expo highlighted the capstone projects for CTS-289 or System Support Project .
“The goal of the expo is for the students to show-case the work they have completed this semes-ter. This gives them the chance to reflect on their projects and to determine if they met their goals
from the beginning of the semester. The expo also gives students a chance to share their accom-plishments,” said Shelia Martin, who is SCC’s chairperson of Computer Information Technology. “By participating in the expo, students also have the opportunity to com-municate with folks who are not in the computer field and answer their questions.”
Students set up displays to showcase their projects for the expo, which is in its fourth year. Most of the students worked in teams, which simulated a work environment and
will provide beneficial ex-perience for them. Some of the students’ projects will benefit the Surry County Wildlife Rehabili-tation; LP Corp.; Surry-Yadkin Electric Member-ship Corp., as well as departments on the SCC campus.
Projects included de-signing and implementing an inventory system and testing components; creat-ing a procedures manual for software installation; creating a sign-in/report-ing program for computer lab usage; designing a web-site; and installing, testing and documenting network equipment.
