WarningPower sources • This equipment should be operated only rom the power source indicated on the product. This

equipment is intended to be used with a main power system with a grounded (neutral) conductor. The third

(grounding) pin is a saety eature, do not attempt to bypass or disable it.

Power disconnection • To remove power rom the equipment saely, remove all power cords rom the rear o

the equipment, or the desktop power module ( i detachable), or rom the power source receptacle (wall plug).

Power cord protection • Power cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be stepped on or pinched

by items placed upon or against them.

Servicing • Reer all servicing to qualifed service personnel. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. To prevent

the risk o shock, do not attempt to service this equipment yoursel because opening or removing covers may

expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards.

Slots and openings • I the equipment has slots or holes in the enclosure, these are provided to preventoverheating o sensitive components inside. These openings must never be blocked by other objects.

Lithium battery • There is a danger o explosion i battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace it only with the

same or equivalent type recommended by the manuacturer. Dispose o used batteries according to the

About this GuideThis guide describes the Extron SW HDMI Series switchers and discusses how to install,

conigure, and operate them.In this guide, the term “SW HDMI Series” refers to both the SW2 HDMI and theSW4 HDMI switchers. “Switcher” and “SW HDMI” are used interchangeably to refer toany single unit.

About the SW HDMI Series SwitchersThe Extron SW HDMI Series are two and four input, one output, High-definitionMultimedia Interface (HDMI) switchers. They allow multiple HDMI signals, including digitalvideo, 3D signals, and embedded multi-channel digital audio, to be switched to onecompatible display. These switchers support all standard single-link HDMI (up to 225 MHz)and DVI 1.0 signal formats. They are compatible at 60 Hz with all HDTV resolutions up

to 1080p and PC resolutions up to 1920x1200, with 12-bit color, and are ully compliantwith High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP).

The SW HDMI switchers can be controlled via the front panel, the RS-232 interface, orthe optional IR 102 Remote Control. You can select inputs by pressing the ront panelbuttons, enabling auto-input switching, entering Simple Instruction Set (SIS™) commandsvia RS-232, or pressing buttons on the IR 102.

Features• HDCP authentication — The SW HDMI switchers check the sources and the display

individually for HDCP compliance. HDCP LEDs for each input and the output indicatesuccessful HDCP authentication.

• Auto-input switching — The SW HDMI Series can be configured to automaticallyswitch to the highest-numbered active input when the switcher detects a signal.

• Signal detection LEDs — Each input and the output are represented by front panelLEDs, which light if a signal is present for the input or output and there is activity onthe Transition Minimized Dierential Signaling (TMDS) lines.

• Rack and furniture mounting — The SW HDMI Series can be mounted on a rackshel or under a desk or podium with an optional mounting kit.

• Remote configuration and control — The switcher can be conigured via an RS-232or USB connection via SIS commands (see “Using Simple Instruction Set (SIS)Commands” in the “Remote Communication and Control” section).

• EDID Minder — A proprietary EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) managementprocess from Extron, the EDID Minder manages the EDID between a digital displaydevice and one or more input sources. By maintaining continuous EDID communication

with all sources, EDID Minder ensures that digital sources power up properly andmaintain their video output, whether or not they are actively connected to the digitaldisplay device.

• EDID modes — Either of the following EDID modes can be selected by SIS commands:

• Automatic, in which the SW HDMI reads the EDID data when a display is connectedand stores the data in memory (deault mode)

• User-assigned, in which you can assign one of 46 factory-provided files of EDIDinormation to each input. Four undeined slots are also provided, to which you cansave the EDID of connected displays as additional EDID files. The assigned EDID doesnot change i a dierent display device is connected. This mode is useul or trouble-shooting purposes.

Each time power is applied to the output device or the display is replaced, the SW HDMIeither reads the EDID information from the display or reloads the user-assigned EDIDinormation. It then writes the inormation to non-volatile memory on the inputs. Theinput devices can read this inormation as they reboot (see “EDID Modes” in the“Operation” section or more inormation).

• Output compatibility correction — The SW HDMI monitors the EDID on theconnected output device to ensure it is compatible with the currently selected inputsignal. The ollowing corrections are made to the signal as necessary each time an inputis selected:

• Interface format: If the connected output device is DVI and the selected source isHDMI, the signal is reformatted for DVI. If the output device is an HDMI device, noreformatting is necessary because HDMI is backwards compatible with DVI.

• Video color bit depth: I the connected output device does not support the colorbit depth o the selected source signal, it is truncated to the next level down that issupported; for example, 12-bit >10-bit > 8-bit. Bit depth truncation can be forcedvia SIS commands to always downgrade to 8-bit, disabling deep color.

• IR remote control (optional) — The hand-held IR 102 Remote Control can controlthe SW HDMI via infrared signals that it sends to the switcher from a distance of up to30 eet (9 m).

• Front panel security lockout (executive mode) — To prevent unauthorized access tothe switchers, the ront panel controls can be locked via the ront panel buttons or SIScommands (RS-232, USB, and IR control remain available).

• Input cable equalization — Automatic input cable equalization compensates or signal

loss when long cable assemblies are used.• Power supply — An external 12 VDC, 1 A power supply with a 2-pole captive screw

connector accepts 100 to 240 VAC.

Installation

This section describes the installation and setup of the SW HDMI Series switchers. Topicsinclude:

Installation OverviewTo install and set up the SW HDMI switcher:

1. Turn off all equipment and disconnect it rom the power source.

2. (Optional) Mount the switcher on a rack shel or urniture (see “Mounting theSW HDMI” on page 31).

3. Connect HDMI input sources to one or more of the SW HDMI input connectors.

4. Connect an HDMI output device to the output connector.

5. Connect control devices. Connect your computer to one of these SW HDMI portsto configure and control the switcher via SIS commands or the Universal Switcher

Control Program:• RS-232 port — Pins 1, 2, and 3 o the Remote port (d on the rear panel

diagram on the next page) or Serial RS-232 control. (See “Wiring for RS-232Control” on page 7 or connection procedures.)

• Config port — USB mini-B connector (f on the front panel diagram in the“Operation” section) for USB control. (See “Connecting to the USB Port” onpage 8 or connection procedures.)

6. (Optional) Enable auto-input switching. Use a jumper to connect pins 4 and 5 ofthe 5-pole captive screw plug that you plugged into the Remote connector in step 4 (see “Enabling Auto-input Switching” on page 10).

7. Power on the output display.

8. Connect power to the switcher (see “Powering On the Switcher” in the“Operation” section).

9. Power on the source devices.

b  Video input connectors — Connect HDMI video input sources to these Type Afemale single-link HDMI connectors. Data rates of up to 6.75 Gbps are supported.

• LockIt security brackets: LockIt® cable lacing brackets, one for each HDMI input

and the output connector, are provided with the SW HDMI. These brackets canbe used to secure the HDMI cables to the rear panel connectors, reducing stresson the connectors and preventing signal loss due to loose cable connections. Forinormation on attaching the LockIt brackets, see the LockIt HDMI Lacing Bracket Installation Guide card, available on the Extron website at www.extron.com .

• EDID information: By default, EDID is read from the output device and writtento memory on each input, allowing the source to see the EDID information for theoutput device even when the output is switched away rom it.

NOTE: I power is recycled to the display, or i a new display is connected, thesource may need to be rebooted to read the new EDID.

c  Video output connector — Connect an HDMI display device to this female Type AHDMI connector.

The EDID information is read from the connected output device via this connector andis written to memory on each input whenever the output device is connected this portand powered on.

d  Remote and auto-input switching connector — This 5-pole, 3.5 mm captivescrew connector (labeled “Remote”) can be used or RS-232 communication with theswitcher, including irmware updates, and to enable auto-input switching.

• To enable RS-232 control, connect the Tx (transmit), Rx (receive) and G (ground)pins to the serial port o your computer (see “Wiring for RS-232 Control” onpage 7).

• To enable auto-input switching, short pins 4 and 5 o this connector together.In auto-input switch mode, the switcher automatically switches to the highestnumbered active input (see “Enabling Auto-input Switching”on page 10).

Wiring the Power Connector (Optional)A 12 VDC, 1 A desktop power supply is provided with the SW HDMI. Should it becomenecessary to attach a 2-pole captive screw connector to your Extron power supply, followthese instructions:

CAUTIONS:  • The power supply must not be permanently ixed to the building structureor similar structures.

• The power supply must not be located within environmental airhandling spaces or the wall cavity.

• The installation must be in accordance with the applicable provisionsof the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, Article 725 and theCanadian Electrical Code, Part 1, Section 16.

• The power supply must be located in the same vicinity as the ExtronAV processing equipment in an ordinary location, Pollution Degree 2,secured to a podium, a desk, or an equipment rack within a dedicatedcloset.

• Always use a power supply specified for the SW HDMI by Extron.Use of an unauthorized power supply voids all regulatory compliancecertiication and may cause damage to the supply and the switcher.

1. Cut the DC output cord to the length needed.

2. Strip the jacket to expose 3/16 inch (5 mm) o the conductors.

CAUTIONS:  • Exposing more than 3/16 inch (5 mm) of the copper wirescould allow the stripped wires to touch each other, causing ashort circuit. This could result in the external DC power supplyoverheating and burning.

• Stripping the wires to expose less than the recommended amountmay cause them to slide out o the connector too easily, even ithey are tightly pinched by the captive screws.

• Do not tin the stripped power supply leads beore attaching thecaptive screw plug to them. Tinned wires are not as secure in thecaptive screw connectors and can be easily pulled out. They mayalso break ater being bent several times.

3. Slide the leads into the supplied 2-pole captive screw plug and secure them, using asmall screwdriver.

WARNING: The two power cord wires must be kept separate while the powersupply is plugged in. Remove power beore wiring.

4. To veriy the power cord polarity beore connecting the plug, connect the powersupply with no load and check the output with a voltmeter.

5. Use the supplied tie-wrap to strap the power cord to the extended tail of theconnector.

Wiring for RS-232 Control

The 5-pole, 3.5 mm Remote captive screw connector is used or optional RS-232communication, such as irmware updates, and to enable auto-input switching betweeninputs connected to the switcher.

Use a female 9-pin D to bare wire RS-232 cable or a universal control cable (UC50',UC100', or UC200') to connect your computer or control system to the RS-232 pins of theRemote connector.

1. Wire the unterminated end of the RS-232 cable to the provided 5-pole captive screwplug as described below. Connect the transmit, receive, and ground wires o the cableto the first three pins on the connector, starting at the let:

• Connect the transmit wire to pin 1, which plugs into the Tx (transmit) port.

• Connect the receive wire to pin 2, which plugs into the Rx (receive) port.

• Connect the ground wire to pin 3, which plugs into the G (ground) port.2. Plug the 5-pole connector into the Remote receptacle on the rear panel o the

switcher.

2. If this is the first time you have connected an SW HDMI to this USB port on yourcomputer, the Found New Hardware Wizard opens. On the first screen, specifywhether you want the computer to connect to Windows Update in order to searchthe web for the driver that it needs to communicate with the switcher via the USBport. This is not necessary if the USB driver already exists on your computer.

• Select the Yes, this time only radio button i you want your computer toconnect to Windows Update only this one time.

• Select Yes, now and every time I connect a device i you want the computerto automatically connect to Windows Update to search the web every time theswitcher is connected to this USB port.

• Select No, not this time i you do not want the computer to connect toWindows Update to search the web at this time (for example, if the driver isalready on your computer).

3. Click Next. On the next screen, select the Install the software automatically (Recommended) radio button, then click Next (you do not need to insert a disc).

Your computer locates the driver needed for it to communicate with the SW HDMI viathe USB port and loads it to the computer hard drive.

4. When the Completed screen appears, click Finish to close the wizard.

NOTE: This wizard appears only the first time you connect the SW HDMI toeach USB port. You do not see the wizard again unless you connect theswitcher to a different USB port on your computer.

5. Conigure the switcher as desired using SIS commands (see the RemoteCommunication and Control section, beginning on page 19, or inormation onavailable commands).

Enabling Auto-input SwitchingYou can set up the SW HDMI to automatically select the active, connected input basedon detection o an active video signal. I two or more inputs are active, the input withthe highest number is selected (for example, input 4 on an SW4 HDMI switcher). Whenauto-input switching is in effect, the green Auto Switch LED on the front panel lights andthe ront panel input selection buttons are disabled.

To enable auto-input switching:

1. Cut a small piece o wire to use as a jumper.

2. Insert the ends o the wire into slots 4 and 5 o the provided 5-polecaptive screw plug, connecting pins 4 and 5 together.

3. Use a small screwdriver to tighten the two screws above pin slots 4 and5 o the plug, so that the jumper wire ends remain securely in place (seethe illustration at right).

4. Insert the plug into the 5-pole Auto-SW captive screw connector on therear panel.

NOTE: Auto-input switching utilizes the +5 V signal (pin 18 of the HDMI inputconnector) to detect an active source (see figure 5 on page 7). This+5 V signal should be present only when the input source is poweredon. However, some sources may also provide this signal while in standbymode.

Figure 9 shows an SW4 HDMI with a jumper connecting pins 4 and 5 to enable auto-inputswitching.

c  Input Selection buttons and LEDs — Press these buttons to select inputs 1 and 2or 1 through 4, depending on your model. The LED at the right of each button lightswhen the corresponding input is selected. These buttons are disabled i auto-inputswitching is in effect; however, the LEDs continue to light to indicate the selectedinput.

The input buttons are also used or enabling ront panel lockout (executive mode) and

to initiate a system reset (see “Locking and Unlocking the Front Panel (ExecutiveMode)” on page 15 and “Resetting” on the next page).

d  Signal status LEDs —

• Inputs: Each input has a corresponding numbered Signal LED, which illuminateswhen a source is connected to the input connector and TMDS clock activity isdetected on it.

NOTE: If the source device connected to the selected input is HDCPencrypted (requires HDCP authentication), the corresponding signalLED may not light unless HDCP has been authenticated.

• Output: The Output Signal LED lights when a TMDS signal is being transmitted tothe connected output device.

e HDCP status LEDs —

• Inputs: Each input has a corresponding numbered HDCP LED. If the connectedsource requires HDCP, the corresponding LED illuminates when authentication issuccessul.

NOTE: HDCP is pre-authenticated on each input regardless of the currentlyselected source.

• Output: The Output HDCP LED lights if the currently selected input requires HDCPand the connected output device has been successully authenticated.

NOTE: HDCP is re-authenticated on the output whenever a new input isselected.

f  Config port — Connect a USB cable (USB A to mini B) between your computer andthis female USB mini B port to configure and control the switcher via SIS commands orthe Universal Switcher Control Program and to update the firmware.

Operations

Powering on the Switcher

To power on the SW HDMI:

1. Connect all input and output devices to the rear panel connectors on the switcher (see

“Rear Panel Features” on page 5 or the rear panel connections).2. Power on the display.

3. Plug the power supply into the 2-pole captive screw power connector on the rearpanel. Ater approximately 4 seconds, the ollowing takes place:

• The unit perorms a sel-test, during which the ront panel Auto Switch, Input,Signal, and HDCP LEDs each blink once in sequence from left to right. If theself-test completes with no errors, the LED for the most recently selected inputremains lit.

• The switcher reads the available EDID information from the connected outputdevice and writes it to memory on each input. When power is removed, thesesettings remain in memory and are in eect when power is reapplied.

NOTE: If EDID Minder is in automatic mode, the settings revert to the defaultEDID unless a display is connected to the HDMI output (see “EDIDModes” on page 15).

4. Power on the input devices.

Selecting an Input

To switch (tie) an input to the output, press the desired input button on the ront panel(ensure that auto-input switching is not enabled). The LED corresponding to the selectedinput button lights.

• To determine the current configuration, check the front panel input LEDs. The one that

is lit indicates the selected input. The LED remains lit until a new input is selected.• Only one input can be switched to the output at a time.

Other ways to select an input include using SIS commands (see the Input Selection commands in the “Remote Communication and Control” section) or optional IR remotecontrol (see “Using the Optional IR 102 Remote Control” on the next page).

Resetting

To reset the switcher to its actory deault settings:

1. Press and hold the Input 1 button while power is being applied to the unit.

2. Continue holding the Input 1 button until the power-up sequence completes.

Using the Optional IR 102 Remote Control

The optional hand-held IR 102 Remote Control (part #70-224-10) lets you remotelyperorm unctions that are also available through the ront panel buttons and SIScommands.

The IR receiver port on the front panel is located to the right of the Auto Switch LED. Itreceives signals rom the remote control i they are sent rom within a 40-degree arc to theright or let o direct line o sight between the remote control and the switcher receiver,and rom no more than 30 eet (9 m) away (see igure 12).

Locking IR remote access

The SW HDMI can be set to lock out users from using theIR 102 Remote Control to control the switcher. Remote

access can be enabled and disabled via SIS commands(see the Front Panel IR Receiver Enable and Disable commands on page 22 in the Command and Response Table or SIS Commands). Whenremote access is set to Off, all switcher controls remain available through the SW HDMIront panel.

Locking and Unlocking the Front Panel (Executive Mode)

Front panel lock mode disables all ront panel controls, locking out users rom thosefunctions (RS-232, USB, and IR control remain available). Putting the switcher in lock modeenhances security by protecting against inappropriate or accidental changes to settings. Ia front panel button is pressed during lock mode, all front panel LEDs blink once.

To lock or unlock the ront panel, press and hold Input buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously or3 seconds, then release. The front panel LEDs blink three times, indicating that executivemode has been enabled or disabled (see igure 13).

EDID Modes

The SW HDMI switchers utilize the EDID Minder, which maintains EDID communication toall connected sources, whether or not any of the sources are selected. EDID informationconsists o the display resolution, reresh rate, data rate, supported audio ormats, andother features. By factory default, the EDID stored on all inputs contains information for anative resolution of 720p @ 60 Hz, 2-channel audio.

EDID Minder can be configured in two modes: automatic and user-assigned.

Automatic EDID mode

In automatic mode, the switcher automatically stores EDID from the connected display andcommunicates it to the inputs; no other coniguration is required. This is the deault mode.

• Reading and storage process — Each time a display is connected to the HDMI

output while the power is connected, the SW HDMI reads the EDID from the displaydevice and stores it at each input. This inormation is retained ater the display isdisconnected; however, it is overwritten i a new display is connected or a userassigned EDID file is selected.

• Default EDID — When the switcher is in automatic mode, the default EDID(720p @ 60 Hz) is stored at each input until a display is connected, at which time it isoverwritten.

User-assigned EDID mode

In this mode, you can select an EDID file that is stored on the switcher at the factory.The selected EDID is stored at the inputs and is not overwritten; the switcher does notautomatically obtain EDID information from the display.

You may want to use this mode i there is a problem with automatic communication o

the EDID information from the attached display, and you want to ensure that the correctinformation is stored on the inputs. Also, because this mode disables automatic EDIDreading and storage, you can retain one set of EDID information on the inputs and nothave it changed when another display is connected.

• Factory-loaded EDID files — You can select from a list of 46 EDID files that areloaded on the switcher at the factory. Each EDID file contains a unique nativeresolution and audio support (i applicable). The EDID table on the next page showsthe EDID files that are provided with the switcher.

• User-loaded EDID file — In addition to the 46 EDID files provided with the switcher,our empty locations (47 through 50) are provided. To these slots you can save theEDID of the display that is currently connected to the output port of the switcher. Anyof these four files can then be selected as one of the user-assigned EDID files.

Changing the EDID mode

EDID modes can be switched only by SIS command. By default, the SW HDMI is inautomatic EDID mode. To change between automatic and user-assigned modes, enter theollowing SIS command:

where X% is 0 (automatic mode) or the number of the user-assigned EDID file that youwant to select (1 through 50) (see the “Remote Communication and Control” sectionfor instructions for entering SIS commands via RS-232 or USB).

NOTE: The switcher remains in the selected EDID mode after power is recycled. If theunit is reset to actory deaults, it reverts to automatic mode.

This section describes remote operation of the SW HDMI switchers. Topics include:

• Using Simple Instruction Set (SIS) Commands

• Updating Firmware Using Firmware Loader

Using Simple Instruction Set (SIS) CommandsThe SW HDMI can be remotely set up and controlled via Extron SIS commands that areissued rom a host computer or other device, such as a control system. SIS commands canbe issued via RS-232 rom the computer serial port to the rear panel Remote port, or viaUSB from the computer USB port to the front panel Config port. (See “Wiring for RS-232Control” on page 7 or “Connecting to the USB Port” on page 8 to connect to theseports.)

Host-to-switcher Communications

SIS commands consist o one or more characters per ield. No special characters arerequired to begin or end a command sequence. You can enter these commands rom

your computer using a communication software program such as Extron DataViewer orHyperTerminal. When the switcher determines that a command is valid, it executes thecommand and sends a response to the host device.

Most responses from the SW HDMI to the host computer end with a carriage return anda line eed (CR/LF = ]), which signals the end o the response character string. A string isone or more characters.

Switcher-initiated Messages

When a local event such as a front panel selection or a change in signal status takes place,the switcher responds by sending a message to the host, indicating what selection wasentered. No response is required rom the host.

The ollowing switcher-initiated message is displayed:(C) Copyright 20nn, Extron Electronics HDMI Switcher Series, Vn.nn,60-641-nn

The switcher sends the copyright message when it first powers on. Vn.nn is the irmwareversion number; 60-641-nn is the switcher part number.

NOTE: This message is displayed only at power-up with an RS-232 connection.

Error Responses

I the switcher is unable to execute a command it receives because the command is invalidor contains invalid parameters, the switcher returns an error response to the host. Theollowing error response codes can be sent:

E01 – Invalid input channel number (out o range)E06 – Invalid input selection during auto-input switchingE10 – Invalid commandE13 – Invalid value (out o range)

Updating Firmware Using Firmware LoaderUpdates to the SW HDMI Series firmware are made available periodically via the Extronwebsite. You can ind out what version o irmware is currently loaded on your switcherby entering the SIS Q command via the RS-232 or USB interface (see “Using SimpleInstruction Set (SIS) Commands”on page 19 or the procedure or entering SIScommands).

Downloading and Installing Firmware Loader

Extron recommends using the Firmware Loader software to update the firmware onthe SW HDMI. If you do not already have Firmware Loader installed on your computer,download it as ollows:

1. Go to the Extron website at www.extron.com and click the Download tab.

2. On the Download Center screen, click the Software link on the let sidebar menu.

3. On the next Download Center screen, locate Firmware Loader and click its Download link.

4. On the next screen, enter the requested inormation, then click theDownload fw_loader_v nx nx n.exe button (where n is the Firmware Loader versionnumber).

5. Follow the instructions on the rest o the download screens to save the executableFirmware Loader installer ile to your computer. Note the older to which the ile wassaved.

6. In Windows Explorer or another file browser, locate the downloaded executableinstaller ile and double-click it to open it.

7. Follow the instructions on the Installation Wizard screens to install Firmware Loaderon your computer. Unless you specify otherwise, the installer program places theFirmware Loader file, FWLoader.exe, at c:\Program Files\Extron\FWLoader.

To load a new version o irmware to the switcher using Firmware Loader, connect yourcomputer serial port to the irst three pins o the switcher Remote port (see “Wiring forRS-232 Control” in the “Installation” section or inormation on connecting to the serialport).

1. I you have not already done so, download and install the Firmware Loader executableinstaller ile to your computer (see “Downloading and Installing FirmwareLoader” on the previous page).

2. If necessary, download the latest version of SW HDMI firmware and install it on yourcomputer (see “Downloading the SW HDMI Firmware” on the previous page).

3. Open the Firmware Loader via your desktop Start menu by making the ollowingselections:

Start >  All Programs > Extron Electronics > Firmware Loader > Firmware 

Loader

The Firmware Loader window opens with the Add Device window displayed in ronto it.

4. On the Add Device window, select SW  HDMI Series rom the Device Names drop-down menu.

5. From the Connection Method drop-down menu, select either RS-232 or USB.

6. Depending on the connection method that you selected, additional options appear.Make the appropriate selections or your connection method.

• RS-232: Select the appropriate options rom the Com Port and Baud Rate menus(this inormation is provided by your system administrator).

• USB: Only the Extron USB Device_0 option is available on the Available Devices menu. Make sure that it is selected.

7. Click Connect. I the connection is successul, SW  HDMI Series is displayed in green inthe Connected Device section, ollowed by a green check mark.

8. Click the Browse button in the New Firmware File (Optional) section.

9. On the Open window, navigate to the new irmware ile, which has an S19 extension,and double-click it.

CAUTION: Valid firmware files must have the file extension S19. A ile with anyother extension is not a irmware upgrade or this product and couldcause the switcher to stop unctioning.

NOTES:  • The original actory-installed irmware is permanently available on theSW HDMI. If the attempted firmware upload fails for any reason, theswitcher reverts to the actory version.

• When downloaded from the Extron website, by default theirmware is placed in a older at C:\Program Files\Extron\Firmware\SW  HDMI (Windows XP) or C:\Program Files (x86)\

If you will be uploading the firmware to multiple SW HDMI switchers that areconnected to your computer, do the ollowing:

a. Click Add Next. Your irst device is added to the Devices section o FirmwareLoader window, and the Add Device window remains open.

b. For each additional device you want to add to the Firmware Loader window,

repeat steps 5 through 9, then click  Add Next.

c. For the last device, click Add (instead o Add Next) to add the device and to closethe Add Device window.

11. I you want to remove a device rom the Devices section, do the ollowing:

a. Click on the names o the devices to be deleted, to highlight them.

b. Select Remove Selected Device(s) rom the Edit menu.

c. On the Remove Device(s) window, select or deselect any devices on the list asdesired, then click Remove.

To remove all devices, select Remove  All Devices rom the Edit menu.

12. Click Begin. The ollowing indicators show the progress o the update:

• The Transer Time section shows the amounts o remaining and elapsed time orthe update.

• The Total Progress section displays a progress bar with Uploading... above it.

• In the Devices section, the Progress column displays an incrementing percentageand another progress bar. The Status column displays Uploading.

Mounting the SW HDMIThe SW HDMI switcher can be set on a table, mounted on a rack shelf, or mounted undera desk, podium, or table.

Tabletop Use

Four self-adhesive rubber feet are included with the SW HDMI. For tabletop use, attachone oot at each corner on the bottom o the unit, and place the switcher where desired.

Rack Mounting

UL rack mounting guidelines

The following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) guidelines pertain to the safe installation ofthe equipment in a rack.

1. Elevated operating ambient temperature — I the equipment is installed in aclosed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature o the rackenvironment may be greater than room ambient temperature. Thereore, install theequipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature

(Tma = +122 °F, +50 °C) specified by Extron.

2. Reduced air flow — Install the equipment in a rack so that the amount o air lowrequired or sae operation o the equipment is not compromised.

3. Mechanical loading — When mounting the equipment in the rack, ensure thatuneven mechanical loading does not cause a hazardous condition.

4. Circuit overloading — When connecting the equipment to the supply circuit,consider the eect that circuit overloading might have on overcurrent protection andsupply wiring. Consider equipment nameplate ratings when addressing this concern.

5. Reliable earthing (grounding) — Maintain reliable grounding o rack-mountedequipment. Pay particular attention to supply connections other than directconnections to the branch circuit (or example, use o power strips).

Rack mounting procedures

See the Accessories table on page 30 or the available rack shel kits and their partnumbers.

Mounting on a rack shelf 

1. I eet were previously attached to the bottom o the unit, remove them.

2. Mount the switcher on the rack shel, using two 4-40 x 3/16 inch screws in opposite(diagonal) corners to secure the unit to the shel (see figure 23 on the next page).

3. Install blank panels or other units on the rack shel as desired.

4. Install the shel in the rack.

Back of the rack mounting 

The SW HDMI can also be mounted vertically to the front or rear rack supports, using theoptional MBB 100 Back of the Rack Mounting Kit (part number 70-367-01) as follows:

1. If rubber feet were previously attached to the bottom of the unit, remove them.

2. Remove the two screws from each side of the switcher. Retain the screws for possiblelater reassembly.

3. Attach the brackets to the sides of the unit, using the longer screws included in themounting kit (see figure 24).

Furniture Mounting

To mount an SW HDMI switcher under a desk, table, or podium, use the optionalMBU 123 Mini Under-Desk Mounting Kit (part number 70-212-01) as follows:

1. If rubber feet were previously attached to the bottom of the unit, remove them.

2. Remove the two screws from each side of the switcher. Retain the screws for possiblelater reassembly.

3. Attach the brackets to the sides of the unit, using the provided machine screws.

4. Hold the unit with the attached brackets against the underside of the table or otherfurniture. On the mounting surface, mark the location of the screw holes of thebrackets.

5. Drill 3/32 inch (2 mm) diameter pilot holes, 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) deep, into the mountingsurface at the marked screw locations.

6. Insert #8 wood screws into the four pilot holes. Tighten each screw into the mountingsurface until slightly less than 1/4 inch of the screw head protrudes.

7. Align the centers of the slots in the brackets with the mounting screws and place theunit against the surface, with the screw heads through the bracket slots.

8. Slide the unit slightly forward or back, then tighten all four screws to secure it inplace.
