Hello! My name is Maura Garascia and I am very excited to be stepping in as President of the Young Friends board for this year. I have been serving as a board member since 2012 and then as Secretary on our Executive Board for the last two years. We had a very memorable 2014 which kicked off with our Voodoo in the Lou event in January. Our board members continued working hard throughout the year on our other events including our Membership Happy Hour

in July, Mouse Races in September, and Toys and Toddies in December. In addition to planning events, our board members also devoted their time to promoting membership, volunteering for Friends of Kids with Cancer events, providing service to our local hospital partners for children in need, and keeping all board members and volunteers up-to-date on current information with our social media sites. I am truly honored to work with such a gifted group of young professionals as we all continue to dedicate our time to serving both our own mission and supporting Friends of Kids with Cancer. ‘Friends’ Needs YOUR Help!Will you Be a Friend?

My name is Katy Breen and the past two and a half years I served as the Young Friends of Kids with Cancer president. It has been an amazing experience to work with such a dynamic group of young, dedicated professionals. It has been exciting to see our board grow in number and work hard to reach our goals. Our events have been a success and I have confidence they will keep getting better each year. Thank you for allowing me to serve as the president! I will

continue to stay involved with Friends of Kids with Cancer.

Diane Saale has recently joined our team as the Director of Development. She comes to us with more than 20 years of fundraising and grant-writing experience. In her free time, Diane volunteers for other organizations that strive to make a difference, enjoys horseback riding,

coaches cheerleading and gymnastics, as well as being mom to daughter, Taylor and son, Clayton. Her husband, Shawn, is also an active community volunteer as are their two children. Diane’s upbeat and energetic personality lends itself well to our cause of helping children and families. Almost like clockwork, every Tuesday at Friends of Kids with Cancer, we have a tremendous volunteer visit the office and his name is Bob. Bob became part of our family during his daughter’s battle with cancer. After he lost his precious Maddie, he became motivated to get involved in almost every way possible. Witnessing Bob’s tremendous volunteerism for ‘Friends’, it reminds us of the positive impact we were able to make on Bob’s family and on Bob.

It’s tough to explain all that Bob Bayer does and has done for ‘Friends’. He is our regular Tuesday volunteer and we have become very dependent on everything he accomplishes for us in one day. Bob is willing and eager to work any fundraiser or event whenever possible. He even volunteers on his vacation time. But most importantly, Bob started “Maddie’s Wish”, a fund in memory of his daughter. He raises funds to send our patient families to musical productions, whether it’s at a theatre or on ice, all of them were Maddie’s favorites!

You can support Bob and ‘Friends’ by attending the 2nd annual “Maddie’s Wish” Dance and Raffle on March 28. The event will be held at Professional Firefighters of Eastern Missouri (PFEM) Banquet Center from 7-11 pm. Ticket and sponsorship opportunities are available at www.friendsofkids.org.

Caught in the Spotlight!

Ezra Leslie is 8 years-old and his older brother Caleb is a 12 year-old patient at Mercy Hospital St. Louis and the Cardinals Kids Cancer Center. Ezra wanted to honor his older brother’s battle with cancer by organizing a toy drive that would benefit Friends of Kids with Cancer!

After posting an incredibly touching video on Facebook, talking to his school’s administrators, his parent’s business contacts, friends, family and everyone else in the community, the Toy Drive began.

Ezra is a 3rd grade student at Pond Elementary School and worked with school administrators to receive toy donations from students! Additionally, several supporters mailed new toys to the ‘Friends’ office. One group that supported Ezra’s Toy Drive were students from Lindbergh High School and their Sunday Night Lights fundraiser.

After several short weeks promoting his efforts and requesting new toys to donate, Ezra visited the ‘Friends’ office to deliver his final collections. Ezra honored his brother’s battle with cancer by raising more than $1,500 of new toys to fill the Friends of Kids with Cancer Toy Closet!

Thank you to Ezra for organizing such an awesome fundraiser! So many other patients and siblings in the treatment centers will smile because of the toys you collected!

Among our many favorite ways to put smiles on the faces of kids with cancer, our Toy Chest Program is at the top of our list. This program is designed to help ease anxiety, offer distraction and give something to look forward to for a child going through radiation treatment.

Kids would much rather be going to school or being with their friends than having to lie perfectly still under the big, intimidating, and even

scary machine. The Toy Chest Program is a wonderful way to offer a reward. Every time a child has to go in for radiation, there will be a toy waiting that is personalized just for them. We find out exactly what the child likes and send enough toys for everyday of their

treatment. Whether it’s 20, 40 or even more days, we got it covered!

It has been encouraging to hear how survivors look back at radiation treatment and don’t think of it as a “bad thing” because of this program. And

so, we are thrilled at what a huge success this has been. We are truly appreciative of all the amazing toy donations we received this and every year. Thanks to you, we have a wonderful variety of toys to pull from and make sure each of our

special kids get something that will certainly make them smile.

CPC Logistics has been associated with Friends of Kids with Cancer for almost ten years. The relationship started when Hunter Bickel, grandson of John Bickel Sr. and son of John Bickel Jr., was diagnosed with cancer at the tender age of 15 months. CPC was so moved when they witnessed all that Friends of Kids with Cancer did for Hunter, they personally wanted to provide a special opportunity to children dealing with the challenges of having cancer.

Being season ticket holders for the Blues, Cardinals and Rams, the company periodically started donating their unused tickets to Friends. In 2014, these caring men sent 44 kids to the Redbird Club for Cardinals games, 27 kids to the Rams games and several lucky takers to a Blues game. For many of them, this was a “first-time experience” and their generosity made special memories with lots of smiles.

A special mention to Doug Crowell, President & CEO of CPC and Larry Foltz, Vice President of Operations for their generous contributions to our families. Thank you CPC Logistics for helping kids with cancer…be kids and we encourage other companies and individuals to remember Friends of Kids with Cancer for your unused tickets.
