Light is the central word in the readings today. Light for the world, to be more specific. Let's spend some time saying something about darkness, and
also something about what it means to bring light or to illuminate. Darkness refers to the difficulty to discern what we can or can't do: what we should do
and what we shouldn't be doing. It is not a matter of having or not having the strength or the resources to act, but instead, it is a matter of weighing the consequences of our actions. A world in darkness looks like a world in which it seems the same to do good or bad things. There is nothing more discouraging to someone trying to do good in life than to see that the "good luck" of the evil person is as good and sometimes even better than the person who is trying to be just. Another form of darkness is connected with what we know as reality and appearance. When we are in a dark room, any metal may look like gold... In the same way, when the power of appearance takes control of the human heart, it convinces the heart to choose what is false and reject what is true. Accordingly, the immediate pleasure tends to be more attractive than the virtues that require effort and discipline. This situation becomes even more difficult when we find real industries with a lot of money invested in such lies. Much of what we see in publicity through the media has a very specific purpose: "to sell us a lie." A false image of happiness, of what it really means to be a woman, the purpose of life, what love is, what priorities are, etc. Apart from publicity and marketing, we also have unjust and irrational laws. If a country says in its laws that is lawful to kill babies in their mothers’ wombs, that is sending a powerful message to everyone in that country. The message is especially powerful to young people regarding what sexuality means and what respect for the most vulnerable means for that society. As we can see, there are laws that bring and promote darkness.

A Strong Family Story…
Saint Mark’s Youth Group The Saint Mark’s Jr. High Winter Retreat was a fun and grace-filled time. Twenty three students and six adults made the wintery trek to the Schoenstatt Marian Shrine and Retreat Center in Sleepy Eye, MN. Our two-night stay included good food, adoration, capture the flag, presentations by our own St. Mark’s high schoolers, carpet ball (a highlight!), skits, and relays. We were able to visit and pray in the Schoenstatt Shrine, a Marian place of pilgrimage full of rich symbols and history, and we participated in Sunday Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Sleepy Eye, an incredibly beautiful church (a gem!) on southern Minnesota’s plains. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped out and made our retreat possible: Pat Shrake, Jeff Rother, Laura Holupchinski, Keely Wojda, Cathy Bitney, Hannah Mayhew, Nicole Bitney, and Carly Siewert. And to all the retreatants: Thanks for being such a great group of students! As the year continues, stop to remember our theme from the Gospel of John: “In this world you will have trouble…but I have overcome the world” (Jn. 16:33). God is a reality in our lives – and He works all things for good! He truly does.

February 9, 2014 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
All God’s children are welcome to this sacred place and liturgy. The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest.
Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. Pastor of the Church of St. Mark

How Can We Illuminate The World? Jesus calls us to be light. It is an invitation and a commandment; it is a right and a duty. What a task... We understand the greatness of this task immediately, especially when we recall how many dark moments we can find in our own life and how much darkness we can find in our world. To be light means being in the sight of everyone, like a city on top of the mountain. That implies being identified as believers and being subject (if God allows it) to the irony and sarcasm of some people... Or maybe also to be exposed to the sight of someone who is in dire need of changing his or her life. A little detail that can't pass unnoticed: the purpose and goal of all we do is and must be the glory of God, which means that He needs to be known as Lord and the loving source of all good. That being said, everything and everyone that pretends to appropriate or attribute to themselves what only belongs to God (good, beauty, power, pleasure, etc.) is darkness. The first reading gives us hints of this: "Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard," or "bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness." What we get from these texts is what we are trying to explain from the beginning of our meditation: the works of inexplicable generosity that mark the life of the believer (you and me) are the signs of a love that goes beyond selfish interests and personal conveniences, and because of that are signs founded in the Love of God, and have the power to overcome the darkness in the world. Lord, you are the true light that comes into our world and banishes the darkness of our sins. As I humbly kneel before you today, I trust in your mercy and love. Without you I can do nothing. I want this time I spend with you to be the expression of my love for you. I wish only to please you and give you glory in all things. Lord, release me from the shadows of my imperfections and selfishness! Lord, you have given me a mission to banish the darkness of sin in my own life. With your grace, help me to reach out and help others to be children of light at home, in my neighborhood, with my friends and in my place of work. Amen.
