If you’re reading this, you may already be thinking about your own confirmation class and the big day. I’m sharing my confirmation photo with you, while confessing that we were known as the *worst* class (Sunday School right on to confirmation) at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba, Michigan. Because of that, when I visited my confirmation church in 2013, Jim Jensenthe council president and one of my confirmation classmates, and Ithe second career pastor chuckled together. We got it, though. What God did in our baptisms could not be undone. Faith was given. We received the Holy Spirit. And, when we affirmed our baptisms on that day in 1973, we made promises that we had, in fits and starts, kept. And are trying to keep even now. As I tell the confirmands, confirmation isn’t the end, it’s the beginning! Just as happily married couples hold hands and smile at each other during weddings, so the people of faith who have gathered for worship are encouraged to remember what God has done in their baptisms, and to reflect on the living out of their confirmation promises. And, all who gather are asked, just as they were asked at the baptisms of these young people, to pray for them. That day…and often! It’s October 27 th this year and Braelee, Max, Mason and Austin are affirming their baptisms in worship that day. Here’s what they’ll promise: You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? And this year, as they say We do and we ask God to help and guide us, I’m going to suggest that we all reaffirm our baptisms with them, either silently or aloud. It’s October and in October, a pastor’s thoughts turn to……well, to coffee but that’s year-round! In October, I think about Confirmation. If you’re reading this, you may already be thinking about your own confirmation class and the big day. I’m sharing my confirmation photo with you, while confessing that we were known as the *worst* class (Sunday School right on to confirmation) at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba, Michigan.

It’s October 27th this year and Braelee, Max, Mason and Austin are affirming their baptisms in worship that day. Here’s what they’ll promise:

You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism:

YOUR OUTREACH TEAM: Debbie Kamark, Bob Kolinski, Ron Kuehl, Pastor Jan LaVake, Karen Marone, Jenni Williams

A few weeks ago, a shoe store was closing, and a woman purchased all the inventory and gave it away. Not everyone can afford to give at this capacity. However, there are other ways to give from the heart. Here are a few examples of giving in a unique way I thought was worth sharing:

Donate one of your vacation days to someone at work who is balancing work/life due to an illness

in the family and has no more vacation days or PTO days left to use.

Pick up the slack at work when someone is sick.

If a co-worker has a flat tire at 7am and can’t get to work, offer to go get them.

When the person in front of you in the checkout line must put items back due to lack of funds,

offer to pay the difference.

Your co-worker is having trouble making ends meet, is a single parent, and works 2 jobs. Make a

pizza for lunch and send most of it home with them.

Take advantage of a sale and buy an extra one to give to someone.

If you have something to donate to Goodwill, look at those around you first to see if they could use

it.

If you see someone walking in front of your house with a walker in the summer, offer them a

bottle of water.

When going through a McDonalds drive thru for a quick bite, pay for the car behind you too.

Do you have hotel points accumulating for free lodging? Offer a free night stay to a homeless

person.

You’re at the checkout in a grocery store with a large cart of groceries. If the person behind you

has one item, let him go ahead of you.

Pay for a layaway for a needy family.

Pay for a shampoo and cut for a homeless person.

Remember…you do not need to wait to win big, in order to give!

Blessings, Debbie Karmark Your Outreach Team Member

Women of the ELCA “Mindful that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Divine head of the Church, made use of the service and devotion

of women during the days of His earthly ministry, and desiring likewise to follow and serve Him, we do now with UNITED

EFFORT dedicate ourselves to the furtherance of His kingdom by a stewardship of life and service to the glory of the triune

God.”

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: ... a time to plant and a time to uproot. What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the

burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also

set eternity in the human heart; yet, no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to

end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they

live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of

God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing

taken from it.” Ecclesiastics 3: 2-14. (Excerpted)

Thinking of seasons...this season of harvesting what has been planted... brings to mind our congregation’s current awareness of “stewardship”. We pause to consider the gifts of God, to us and to the earth, that we both may produce good things, and that what God does (through us) endures forever. Thinking in this way naturally makes the work of the Women of Our Savior’s stand out as an example of using God-given time, talent, and treasure to “produce good things”, and manage all gifts our congregation has entrusted to us via the annual fundraisers we sponsor. Here’s a sample of what we do:

Lutheran World Relief: We gather required items for Baby Care Kits, Personal Care Kits, and School Supply Kits AND Quilts! This year’s numbers are upcoming, but over the past few years,we have easily shipped a combined total of over 300 kits. Countless hours go into gathering, sorting, wrapping and packing the kits. (Shipping overseas is expensive..average of $2/kit. That’s why we assign some of your donated $$ to help. Want to know more? Visit lwr.org) Currently, WOOS is seeking a coordinator for the Baby Care Kit ministry…and we need people who can do simple straight stitch sewing.

Online Prayer Chain: Administration is currently through WOOS...but ALL are invited and welcome to be part of this “Prayer Warriors” ministry.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Shawls & Baptismal blankets are made with love & prayer for anyone to take and give as an expression of care, comfort, celebration or congratulations...a reminder of the loving prayers of the congregation for the receiving individual. Do you knit or crochet...or want to learn? We need you...we’ll teach you!

Quilt Tying & Sewing: “The Ties that Bind” prolifically produces quilts, shipped around the world to wrap cold & tired people in the love of the Creator with a message of “you are loved and not forgotten”. Always needed are donations of blankets (for fillers), thread, yarn, fabric (sheets!), quilt stitch pins with heads,& large safety pins.

Our Savior’s Library: Again, presently administered through WOOS, this ministry invites anyone interested to join the team! They make accessing an enormous variety of books easy, and want all to enjoy! Whether it’s children’s books, inspiration, Christian fiction, history, arts & crafts, movies, music and more...check out the awesome collection.

Funeral Serving Committee: The Women of Our Savior’s are here to support grieving families who gather in our Fellowship Hall, as they celebrate and remember the life of a beloved. Whether it’s setting up and serving food, or making some dessert bars, this team can always use your help.

Bible Study Circles: Small group Bible Study is offered monthly with 4 different offerings of day/time. ALL are welcome to Study the WORD with any of the groups! We especially invite you to participate in the current reading of ”Love Without Limits”. There is a copy in our Library, and we have enough for anyone to read out loud with us...every 3rd Tuesday of the month, 6 pm in Grace Place.

The Giving Tree: Previously called “The Knitten Tree”, this Ministry has expanded from just knitted winter goods to include any and all warm hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, calendars, cards, stationery, personal care items, etc. that are gathered under the Giving Tree on the stage in the Fellowship Hall during the month of October into the first 2 weeks of November. Goods are then sorted and delivered to Christine Anne Center, Salvation Army, and through the local prison ministry. Our “Birdie’s Blessing Box” will most likely need some too! (We need a coordinator for this Giving Tree ministry.)

More Ministries Supported by Women of Our Savior’s and their Mission Pledge: These ministries receive monetary and sometimes “in kind goods”, which the generosity of the congregation makes possible through your annual support of our 3 major fundraising events: Sweetest Day (Feb.), Fair Offer Rummage Sale (May), and The Christmas Cookie Sale (Dec).

We no longer prepare an “Annual Budget”. We simply make a “Mission Pledge” to the Ministries, and then work in faith to do what we believe the gifts of God, the heart of Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit will accomplish. We invite everyone to join us in this work. Contact any team member below to help, or for more info. And thank you again for your support! Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, October, 2019 We are a community of faith drawn together by God’s Love. This year we celebrated a big anniversary—150 years—and big acts of Love (also called ministries!): Feeding Hungry Kids, Birdie’s Box, Loaves and Fishes, Christian Education for many ages, the work of many hands in creating quilts and care kits for people in need and much more---all done with Love. . The gifts of God for God’s people are many—Faith. Hope. Love; Unending Presence in times of hardship and struggle, guidance, encouragement, and communities of faith such as ours who gather for teaching and strengthening faith, worshipping the One who has loved us for all time, and mutual joy in each other. You matter in God’s work here at Our Savior’s. You have given back to God from the abundant love and Grace that God has given you—in the form of your offerings, the work of your hand and your precious time. It is because of these offerings of yourselves that we are able to share and to teach about God’s love….and to follow Jesus’ two rules to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This year we are distributing our Estimate of Giving cards during each Sunday worship service in October and the first week of November. We are asking you to prayerfully consider completing one and returning it in the offering plate or mailing it in. Estimates of giving help us better plan for our ministries, worship, education and coffee (wait, who said that?). All kidding aside, we ask you to give as you are able, and if you are willing, to fill out the form. Thank you for your lives lived in faith, and for the ways that you make it possible for this community to do God’s work with our hands. It reminds us of this great hymn: We are an Offering. Hymn #692 ELW

We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our lives up to you: we are an offering Lord, use our voices, Lord use our hands, Lord use our lives, they are yours, we are an offering

All that we have, all that we are, all that we hope to be, We give to you, we give to you We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our lives up to you We are an offering, we are an offering.

Every blessing,

The Stewardship Team of Our Savior’s Lutheran Nick Bouche, Shari Englund, Toby Kamark and Pastor Jan

Do you seek a life centered on Jesus? Do you seek to explore and live his Way of Love? Get inspired at the Way of Love Revival by looking at how we all can live the Way of Love.

Come hear the message of Michael Curry, the preacher at the 2018 Royal Wedding, whose clear message of love was, according to the New York Times, "the surprise biggest star of this royal wedding." Bishop Curry said Christianity is “a movement grounded in the unconditional love of God for the world and a movement mandating people to live that love and in so doing to change not only their lives but the very life of the world itself.” His message at the Way of Love Revival will echo that love in ways that can inspire those gathered to go out into the world and share that love, and provide practices for a Jesus-centered life.

Come and be inspired by international speaker Bob Lenz. His humorous, down-to-earth style combined with genuine concern and storytelling combines his personal experience with in-depth biblical knowledge and inspires others to embrace faith in Christ and take the next step closer to God.

Memory Care Respite is Where New Memories are Made

By Colleen Harvot, Director of In-Home Care at Valley VNA Senior Care Posted on Sep 23, 2019 by Amy Putzer

Colleen Harvot, director of in-home care, Valley VNA Senior Care

I am very fortunate to be part of Memory Care Respite Partners, a twice-monthly program in Oshkosh. It’s ironic that a program developed for people and families experiencing memory loss has proven itself so successful at making new memories. Every time I participate in an afternoon session, I see

people discovering community as they come together to support one another.

First, a short explanation of Memory Care Respite Partners: it is a community collaboration to provide free respite care for caregivers to people experiencing memory loss, Alzheimer’s, or dementia. The Oshkosh program is offered by reservation on the third and fourth Tuesdays of the month at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1860 Wisconsin Street, Oshkosh.

The program is a partnership between the Winnebago County Aging and Disability Resource Center, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and Valley VNA Senior Care. These partners saw a crucial unmet need for caregiver support, many of whom are spouses or children of aging parents. The Oshkosh Area Community Foundation supported our desire to come together to start the Oshkosh Memory Care Respite program with a $4,000 Community Impact grant. Together we have created a safe, nonjudgmental, and respectful space for people with memory loss.

I participate in each session as the respite care coordinator and work alongside Courtnie, a Valley VNA-employed professional caregiver who is available to help up to 10 participants with personal cares and behavioral assistance during our time together. The rest of the energy and enthusiasm is provided by an incredible volunteer corps from Our Savior’s. These men and women step forward to engage with our respite clients in genuine companionship. The men tend to gather together as menfolk often do, and the ladies enjoy lively visits with one another. We honor one another’s humanity, treat one another as we would wish to be treated, share some music while we play bingo, make a craft, or create a simple culinary masterpiece in one of our most popular activities, “Cooking with Courtnie.”

Carol Kossel is a full-time caregiver to her husband Jim, 78, and she especially loves the volunteers from Our Savior’s. “They are so kind and so welcoming to Jim,” she said. “I never see any hesitation from him, despite the fact that he doesn’t speak much anymore.” She treasures her monthly breaks from caregiving and the chance for Jim to interact with other people besides herself. “I am really, really thankful. I don’t know what we would do without regular outings, to only be at home 24 hours a day.” ~ Carol Kossel

I have worked in senior care for more than 30 years and still marvel at the commitment of caregiving spouses and children who work 24/7 to keep their husband, wife, or parent healthy, safe, and content in the midst of life-altering memory loss. In a world of uncertainty, it is a privilege to be part of a team whose sole purpose is to be present to one another.

Participants in Memory Care Respite Partners must call ahead to Vickie at Our Savior’s at (920) 235-4850 to make a reservation. This is a free program. This was published by Oshkosh Community Foundation and reproduced with their permission.

Collection for Birdie’s Box Every 3rd Sunday of Each Month

We are collecting canned goods for our Birdie's Box on the third Sunday of each month. You may bring the items with you to your seat, and our children will come with their little red shopping carts to collect them. A list of the most useful items can be found in the little

red shopping carts the kids use to collect the food on Sunday. Thank you for supporting this vital hunger ministry to our community!

Upcoming Collection Sundays: October 20th / November 17th / December15th

Here’s the update on the FEEDING HUNGRY KIDS program which offered free lunch during the month of August.

We are pleased to announce there was a total of 6597 lunches provided, split between 6 sites. First English Lutheran, Oshkosh (The Lunch Bunch), provided 2700 over 7 weeks, St. Andrews and Our Saviors Lutheran, Oshkosh provided 3897, over a 5 week period. Besides the three church locations, the Lunch Bus was at Oaklawn School Mon-Thursday and at Pollock Pool on Fridays. The Dragon Wagon was at Evans and Gruenwald five Mondays. (Later they move one block South) Our Savior’s also went to Pollock Pool . Our time there was cut short, as one day a huge storm hit, and the last Friday the pool was closed. However, we had between 47 and 79 attendees on the remaining 3 days.

The Dragon Wagon (St Andrew’s pickup truck) and the Lunch Bus (Kobussen Bus operated by OSLC) drew the largest crowds. In addition to lunches, the churches offered activities and healthy eating options with Americorps volunteers as leaders combined with our own volunteers. One of the churches gave out backpacks with school supplies, water bottles and socks. Another gave out shoes and underwear for 50 kiddos. Another offered canned goods to take home. Two churches offered take home lunches. A few tables with clothing were offered to anyone that could use them.

As you can see, the program was much more then feeding lunches. As sense of community developed during the month. Our Saviors Lutheran Church was able to offer the items at the Lunch Bus thanks to Miravida Living. They prepared many of the items and charged us their cost of product only. Children were welcomed by people of all ages, since volunteers from five more churches along with employees of Miravida Living as well as residents of Simeanna Apartments.

And, of course, we could not have achieved all of this without the use of the Kobussen bus for the month along with our volunteer who drives for Kobussen part time.

Thank you to everyone at OSLC who participated, gave, prayed and supported this important ministry this summer!!!!

It's a New Day. Make it Amazing!

Please help us spread the word…if you know someone who might benefit from this program, please share this information!

Active Minds Community is an engaging experience available to all seniors in the Fox Valley, specializing in memory care, dementia and Alzheimer's. Our clients come to us with amazingly diverse life experiences. Some are dealing with mild memory loss or Alzheimer's. Some struggle with loneliness or depression. Some are simply looking for an opportunity to interact. All share one characteristic: the unquenchable desire to rediscover the joy in their lives.

Through multiple hands-on activities combined with stimulating conversations in a group setting, Active Minds provides the connection that many of our clients feel is missing. Designed with care and love, our classes bring people back to themselves, creating joyous moments and forging precious friendships along the way. And the respite care we provide caregivers is rejuvenating. This is in addition to the Respite Care offered twice monthly. Active Minds is a different sort of program from the respite care, offering education experiences presented by two retired educators. Onsite Classes (at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church – Grace Place) We will be hosting this important community program in our Grace Place. This is in addition to the Respite Care offered twice monthly. Active Minds is a different sort of program from the respite care, offering education experiences presented by two retired educators.

Active Minds registration is still underway for classes. Once it starts, classes will be held on Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00pm to 3:30pm at OSLC Grace Place!

We will be training a 2nd team

of Stephen Ministers in the Fall.

If you are interested, please let

Linda or Pastor Jan know!!!

STEPHEN MINISTRY You may be experiencing any number of difficulties that are causing pain or sadness. If so – you may find a Stephen Minister helpful. We will meet with you for 1 hour a week to listen and care. Stephen Ministry is a confidential one-to-one lay caring

ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Ministry Series system.

Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

The AFTER People……

▪ After the phone call you hoped you’d never get

▪ After the funeral when everyone has left ▪ After the relationship falls apart ▪ After the doctor says “I’m sorry” ▪ After the nursing home director says “welcome to your new home” ▪ After the last child waves and drives away ▪ After the gavel comes down and handcuffs go on ▪ After the baby arrives demanding more than possible ▪ After you find the pink slip in your final paycheck ▪ After your family and friends have heard your story too many times

We are having another training class this Fall! If you would like a Stephen Minister or would like to become a Stephen Minister Contact Pastor Jan or Linda Tedlie at 920-410-0745 / [email protected] Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions!

Midweek Worship Service with Holy Communion

We are continuing our once-monthly midweek service is on the second Wednesday of

each month. The Fall theme is Seeing with eyes of faith. As always, the service is short—

about 30 minutes. It includes communion and special music by Dave Bayer on guitar.

The next service is Wednesday, October 16th at 6:30pm.

Come and see!

Sunday, November 3rd is All Saints Day

We remember those people of our faith community who have died since last All Saints Day by reading their names aloud and ringing a chime. We can also read the names of anyone you would like remembered this day.

Please notify Vickie in the church office or write their names clearly (with pronunciation help if needed) on this form. Please turn this form in to Vickie by Sunday, October 27th.

Blessings, Pr. Jan
