THECOUNSELLOR
Says 25-year old Krutika Nair, “The con-temporary Indian woman is extremely inde-pendent, and capable of making her own de-cisions. Today, apart from handling house-hold chores, she is also capable of financiallyaiding her family.”
Currently based in Canada, Nair took loansto pursue a postgraduate programme in hos-pitality and tourism management at NiagaraCollege, Canada. She now works at FairmontChateau Lake Louise as a Guest ServicesAgent. While taking on sole responsibility topay her loans, she also regularly sends homemoney. Nair’s example only corroborates thefindings of a recent survey by Reuters. Ac-cording to this, women can manage moneybetter, and are more likely to strive harderthan men to become financially independent.
Jolene Simethy 26, moved to Dubai about ayear ago, only to pursue a career in travel andtourism. She says, “I’d been aspiring to be in-dependent for a long time. I moved to Dubai asI wanted to know myself better, as well asgain international exposure.” Ask her to de-scribe the modern day, Indian woman, andshe enumerates, “Open-minded, foresighted, decisive, independent, emotionally strongand unafraid of challenging societal norms.’’
More significantly, while both Nair andSimethy have relatives in Canada and Dubairespectively, they have opted to be independ-ent, living alone.
Also, unlike popular belief, security andstability are not major issues. Says Simethy,“I’m just taking one step at a time. As of now,I’m enjoying my life in Dubai, and have noplans of settling here forever. Let’s see whatthe future holds.”
Though career ranks high onthe list, it does not take prece-dence over their passion.Fatema Jaliwalla, 24, quit awell-paying job as a research an-alyst for an investment bankingfirm, to pursue her desire of be-coming a fashion designer. Shesays, “After one unsuccessful at-tempt, I managed to get into TheNational Institute of Design,Pune.” However, Jaliwalla doesnot fail to mention that she hadto secretly appear for the test atNID, as her parents thought itfoolish to quit a high-paying jobin a reputed firm, to pursue something en-tirely different.
This also highlights the fact that despitesuccess, today’s woman still looks for the ap-proval and support of her parents. Says 23-year old Tania Sachdev who holds the Inter-national Master and Woman Grandmaster ti-tles in chess, “Family is an integral part ofone’s life.’’
THE GLOOMY SIDEHowever, amidst all this positivity, it’s no se-cret that women are constantly eve-teased orexposed to physical abuse, simply becausethey do not conform to the behavioural stan-dards set by others. Only education can
change this regressive attitude. Concurs Jali-walla, “Education opens her mind to newthoughts, ideologies and mindsets. It providesher the knowledge, skill and courage to chal-
lenge existing notions andsystems.” Says Nisha Susan, who initiated the recentPink Chaddi Campaignagainst right wing activistswho beat up two collegegirls in Mangalore, “We stillhave to get our people to ac-cept the plurality of Indianculture. The Mangalore in-cident just demonstratesthat although certain trendsmay be popular among theyouth, some people fail toaccept it. Education shouldencourage people to acceptdiversity. The system shouldalso encourage youth, in-
cluding women, to question societal normsand take part in local governance.”Simethy, too, feels that though the modern-day girl has achieved great success in variousfields, she has still not been able to maximiseher potential. She says, “Women need to makethe most of their ability, and balance it withmaturity and a sense of responsibility. Also, there is still a huge population that is not apart of ‘Modern India’, and the problemsfaced by such women must be addressed im-mediately. Only then can the woman of mod-ern India be truly liberated.’’

All about astrophysics I am doing my BE in mechanical engineering. I have
always been interested in astrophysics/astrometeorology/ astrogeology. Will my BE do or willit cause a hindrance to my career in astrophysics? I dohave a good knowledge of physics, mathematics.
S Kumar Astronomy, the science that deals with the material uni-verse beyond the earth’s atmosphere and sometimes con-sidered a sub-field of physics is further divided into sev-eral branches such as astrophysics, astrometeorology, as-trobiology, astrogeology, astrometry, cosmology etc. All
these branches together help to unravel the mysteriesof the universe.
Astrophysics is the branch ofastronomy that deals with the
physical properties ofcelestial bodies and with
the interactionbetween matter
and radiationin the
interiorof
celestial bodies and in interstellar space.Astrogeology is the science dealing with the structure
and composition of planets and other bodies in the solarsystem.
Astrometeorology is the study of the theoretical effects ofastronomical bodies and forces on the earths atmosphere.
A doctoral degree is the usual educational requirement tobecome an astronomer, since most of the work tends to berelated to research and development.
For a PhD, which is mandatory to do research, one shouldappear for the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)examination.
A number of reputed institutes in the country have cometogether to conduct JEST for enrolment of students in PhD/Integrated MSc - PhD programmes in physics (includingvarious inter-disciplinary research areas in physics) andTheoretical Computer Science. JEST is conducted forselecting candidates to be interviewed for admission to PhDprogrammes in Physics/ Theoretical Computer Science inthese institutions in the country. The participating institutesare:

Eligibility for JEST:For Physics: MSc in Physics or MSc / ME / MTech inrelated disciplines.
Candidates with an MSc in Mathematics will alsobe considered at IIA.
Graduates with a BE or BTech will also beconsidered at IIA, IUCAA, NCRA, JNCASR,RRI, SNBNCBS and IMSc.
At IPR candidates should have a Master’sdegree in Physics, Engineering Physics,Applied Physics, etc. with at least 55%aggregate.
Special Programmes: At HRI, candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will also be
considered for the Integrated MSc-PhD programme inPhysics.
At IMSc, graduates with BSc/ BE/ BTech degree willalso be considered for admission to the MSc (by Research)programme in Theoretical Computer Science / Physics, aspart of an integrated PhD programme in these disciplines.
At SNBNCBS, talented graduates with BSc (Physics)BE/ BTech degree will be considered for the IntegratedMSc-PhD programme.
Integrated MTech-PhD Programme at IIA At Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore,
graduates with an MSc (Physics / Applied Physics) / BE/BTech degree will be considered for the integrated MTech-PhD programme in subject areas mentioned above. Detailsof the programme can be found on the IIA webpage.
