3. Internship in Family & Community Medicine (x).This is a compulsory rotation for all interns from King Faisal University in Family & Community Medicine. It is an all year round activity .

1. Course MDFM 829: Aspects of Human Relations & Behavior, Ethics, and in the Practice of Medicine, 1 Credit hour (x).

This course seeks to ensure that residents have appropriate knowledge of human behaviorand relationships to apply in their medical practice within the country’s ethical and legalframework. Lectures and seminars are employed. At its end, residents understand thepsychological and social variables affecting health, illness, and attitudes of patients tomedical advice and care; help in the preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and supportivecare of individuals and families, the community and psycho-social disorders, andunderstand and apply the ethical and legal rules in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Contribution: Course Coordinator and main instructor (70%) form 1407H (1987) -present.

2. Course MDFM 826: Geriatrics and Terminal Care, one credit hour (x). By this course the residents are helped to understand the process, problems and management of aging, degenerative disorders, and of terminals illness. In addition to lectures and seminars, there are visits to social services organizations for the elderly. The expected terminal competencies are that residents understand the process, epidemiology and problems of aging; give comprehensive medical and terminal care to elderly patients and involve their families in the management; tap the resources and agencies in the community for the care and support of the aged, as well as plan and implement the community aspects of geriatric care. Contribution: Course Coordinator and main instructor and participate in course instruction and field visits since 1414.

3. Course MDFM 824: Health Management (x).This is one credit hour course which aims at enabling residents to have an understanding of the principles of health management with emphasis on management in PHC.

Contribution: Course Coordinator and main instructor (70%) (1990 – present).

4. Course MDFM 847: Applied Primary Health Care, 8 Credit Hours (Formerly CPC2)(x).The aim of this course is to provide a practical experience in running a primary health care. The resident is allocated to a health center where he is involved in the day to daymanagement decisions, clinical work and preventive programmed under the supervision ofthe Director of the Health Center. At the end of the course, residents list the duties of health team members, analyze the flow of clinical work, review the collecting and collating of health data and the planning and management of a health center, describe optimal systems for equipment maintenance, stock control, and for allocation of duties in a healthcenter, demonstrate quality control and design the system and management procedures of asmall health center serving a defined population. In addition residents visits model PHC setups.

5. Course MDFM 831: Comprehensive Health Care 1 (x) Formerly CPC1).

This is a 14 Credit Hours course which runs for 20 weeks. It aims at giving the residents practical experience and in-service instruction in comprehensive health.

Contribution: This is an all year activity as batches of residents overlap. I coordinate andsupervise activities related to the course in the MCH unit in the family medicine clinic. This includes instruction, 2 weekly sessions of residents clinical supervision, conducting clinical mock exams, participation and guidance in the daily morning session activities and acting as an internal clinical examiner at the end of the course (1988- present).

6. Course MDFM 845: Comprehensive Health Care II (x) (Formerly CPC 3).

This is an 8 credit hours course which rums for 12 weeks. It aims at providing continuing experience in comprehensive primary health care and practical experience in teaching methodology and health education.

Contribution: Share with other colleagues clinical instruction and supervision of residents as well as conducting mock examinations (1989 – present).

7. Course MDFM 826: Educational Methodology (x).

This is a one credit hour course which aims at enabling residents to become effectiveteachers.

Contribution: Two 2-hours sessions, 1991 – present.

8. Course MDFM 828: Research Methodology (x).

This is a 2 credit hours course which aims at offering residents knowledge in basic research.

Contribution: A two hours sessions, 1991-present.

9. Course MDFM 848: Research Project.

This is a 16 credit course which runs for a minimum of 24 weeks. It aims at preparing residents to conduct basic research and write up scientific papers. The dissertation is a partial fulfillment of the Fellowship in Family & Community Medicine.

Contribution: I acted as a principal academic supervisor for 6 residents over the past 10 years. Residents select their supervisors from amongst departmental faculty. I also acted as internal examiner for a number of dissertations (public defense). Please see list of titles of dissertations I supervised and those examined (1988-present).

10. Morning Session (x).

This is a 4 days a week activity throughout the year. It runs from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. is whichall interns, residents, and faculty attend. It includes staff presentation, random case

This is a 4 credit hours course and it runs for 4 weeks. It aims at providing the theoretical and practical experience in priority areas of mother and child health, nutrition and genetics. This course involves field visits.
