Mackenzie Mulligan-Buckmiller has grown up in Manitou Springs, Colorado in a close-knit family of four. As such, she values her relatives above all else and simply treasures the out of doors in her home state. She loves to camp, ski, hike, bike and play any outdoor sport. At Manitou Springs High School, Mackenzie graduated second in her class. She participated in the Memorial Hospital Learning Link Program which allowed students to shadow hospital staff members. She has a passion for nursing and sees this as a possible career path. With her twin sister Maria, she started a community service group called PeaceJam Club. In high school Mackenzie was a member of the swimming team (captain in her senior year) and also went to state with her soccer team. Mackenzie states I am a very active person and cannot wait to attend Colorado College in the fall.

Florita Villagrana was born in Denver, Colorado, but Spanish is her fi rst language. Her parents are from Zacatecas, Mexico, and since she was a little girl, Florita enjoyed visiting her grandparents in Mexico every winter holiday vacation. Florita has only one brother, Fabian, who is ten years younger than her. Florita was elected secretary of the National Honor Society in her senior year and received numerous awards scholastically. She has been involved in food drives and is committed to helping others. She

graduated from Alameda High School as valedictorian and is the fi rst in her family to attend college. Florita writes that many doors have been opened for her and she states that she is very grateful to WES for this scholarship. She is also thankful for her parents, Florita and Jorge, for their unconditional love and support. They are an inspiration to her.

Anniversary Scholar Lauren Meg Simon describes herself as an environmentalist and lover of the arts. She spent her fi rst 18 years situated in the suburbs of Cincinnati, and the last two years in the outskirts of downtown Columbus, Ohio where she attended the Ohio State University as an environmental science major with an art minor. Her tentative goal is to work in water management and/or education, specifi cally womens education. In the summers she escapes the city and enjoys working at Sawbill Canoe Outfi tters, a family owned business bordering the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness in Tofte, Minnesota. She cleans cooklits, washes canoes, and is learning to cook. In her free time she has an eclectic collection of hobbies. She runs regularly, reads indiscriminately, bikes as much as she can, shops for produce, sketches, writes and avoids technology at all costs. Meg writes I am so excited to be moving to the West, something I have been wanting to do for as long as I can remember.

A Warm Welcome To Our New WES Scholars

  • As the 2011-2012 year gets underway, we look forward to new beginnings, while at the same time, we look back at 122 years of fascinating WES history. We salute our talented freshman scholars, we welcome incoming Colorado College President Jill Tiefenthaler, and were thrilled about the Van Briggle Pottery Buildings new look. With traditions dating back to 1889, were combing the WES archives to update Bar-bara Arnests A Quiet Work. Minutes from that fi rst April 20th meeting described a society, whose special purpose should be to aid the young women in attendance upon Colorado College and noted that over 100 ladies assembled in the college chapel. Our focus is still the fi nancial support and mentoring of our scholars. Your memberships are appreciated and funds paid above the $25 dues directly help these students. Mark your calendars--and bring a friend--for fundraising projects and interesting programs ahead. We enjoy working as a team to lead WES, an option begun in 2009 with Co-Presidents Jeanne Stiles and Sally Metzger. Visit our website at www.coloradocollege.edu/WES or contact us at (719) 389-7699.
