The Advent Season has begun We have a number of activities which will take place during Advent, including Advent reflections after the 9:00 Mass on Friday mornings, the Advent Penitential Service (December 16), St. Mark’s 3rd Annual Christmas Celebration of Love (December 20) and the decorating of the church for Christmas after the 11:00 Mass on December 21. Please mark these dates in your calendars.

What is Advent? The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event. (This description is taken from the EWTN Web site). Advent reflection booklets and discussion group We have ordered a booklet of daily reflections for Advent by Fr. Ron Rolheiser. These will be available for purchase at the entrances to the church for $2 each. Fr. Dan will be leading a weekly discussion group on Friday mornings throughout Advent (starting, Friday Dec. 5) right after the 9:00 Mass. All are welcome!

Advent candles and reading material available at the main entrance It takes a deliberate effort to keep the focus on Advent. One way to do this is to have an Advent wreath in your home. If you already have an Advent wreath, we will have sets of four Advent Candles available for the next two Sundays at $10 per set. At the entrances to the church, you will also find prayer and reflection materials to help you experience the richness of Advent. Operation Christmas Child A big thank you to our Parishioners for the wonderful response making shoe boxes for this year’s project. A total of 139 boxes were collected!!! Sunday Missals and the Missals for Young Catholics The Church year begins every year with the first Sunday of Advent. You can pick up your Sunday missals for the upcoming church year at the entrance of the church for $5. We also have a missal for children. Some families use these children’s missals to read the upcoming Scripture passages to their children during the week. What a wonderful way to help children become more engaged in the Mass! The cost of the children’s missals is $8. Our Advent Giving Tree During Advent, we are invited to make the crooked paths straight - to think of people who have less than we do. The Giving Tree is our attempt to reach out to those who are in need. The items collected will be given out to the guests at our Christmas Celebration of Love (see below for more information on the dinner). We will be collecting gift cards for the adults and gifts for the children. How it works: The angels on the tree were made by the families who participated in the Advent Event. Choose an angel from the tree. On it you will find a list of items for you to choose from. Bring your donation back to St. Mark’s by December 20th and we will prepare to hand them out at the dinner or through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Thank-you! Monday, December 8: Feast of the Immaculate Conception Please join us for a Liturgy of the Word with Scripture and song to celebrate together the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. St. Mark’s Third Annual Christmas Celebration of Love For the past two years, some generous friends of Fr. Dan’s offered to provide most of the food for a Christmas dinner for the people in our community who otherwise might not be able to have such a meal or fellowship at Christmas. It is a beautiful sign of love in our community! We are now organizing the 3rd Annual Christmas Celebration of Love and are looking for people to help. To find out how you can help out, please contact Diane Burns at (819) 684-0527. Guignolée: Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 7 The Mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is to feed the hungry and care for the homeless. Its mission is to meet with the needy in our community and provide material, emotional and spiritual support. Every year, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul organizes a Guignolée to collect donations and canned goods to prepare its Christmas baskets. All

parishioners are invited to participate in a light lunch after the 11:00 a.m. Mass, and to join one of the many groups which leave from here to go door to door to collect money and food. If you are interested in leading a group with your friends and family members, please call Charles Gutta at (819) 682-5822.

Stars on the Christmas tree: is there one for your family? After the 11:00 Mass on the last Sunday of Advent (December 21), we will be decorating the church for Christmas. We will put up a big Christmas tree at the entrance to the church, which will be decorated with many gold stars. Each star has the name of one of the families in our parish. Please note that the names on the tree are those of registered parishioners only – another good reason to pick up a parishioner registration form at the back of the church and return it to a hospitality minister or to Fr. Dan. Envelopes for the collection Collection envelopes will be available for pick-up after all the Masses on December 13-14. Christmas Mass times Please note that the Mass times for Christmas will be different this year as we add a Mass on Christmas Eve.
