Registration of SDFI

It was decided to register SDFI as a ‘Trust’ keeping in mind the pros and cons in consultation with lawyers and well-wishers

4th Feb’ 2009 marks this important date of registration of SDFI with its head office in CHAI unit in Delhi

Mr. Martin Pinto has been appointed as the Auditor

Appointment of Coordinator

For more effective dealing of the activities of the SDFI, Mrs Rabia Mathai suggested appointment of a coodinator

Sr. Susan Joseph MSW of the congregation of the sisters of Mary Mediatrix was appointed as the coordinator from 01.05.2008

Sr. Susan was immediately given the work of bringing out SDFI Directory

Status of SDFI Directory Work Sr. Susan Joseph’s dedication and hard

work resulted in collection of the Directory Data within the record time and bring the proof copy to this AGBM.

SDFI gives a wholehearted big thanks to the Board members and Fr. Mathew Abraham, Exec. Secr. Commission for Health, CBCI for the help and support given to Sr. Susan

Other New Initiatives

SDFI Website & E-Forum: SDFI website has reached it’s final stage

of completion. Don Bosco Institute, Yelligiri, TN is behind the designing of website.

SDFI owes a heartfelt thanks especially to Fr. Mathew Abraham, Executive Secretary, Commission for Health CBCI for his interest and concern to help SDFI realize its dream come true.

Steps towards building Corpus Fund in SDFI

A life time amount of Rs. 3000.00 could be paid in one or three installments by new members.

For those who have paid Rs.2000.00 already, they would have to pay the balance of Rs. 1000.00

XIV AGM of SDFI

Held at St.John’s Medical College Bangalore on 22nd – 24th February 2008

A Royal residence and reception was arranged by Fr. Kalam the Director of St.John’s Medical College, Bangalore.

Arch Bishop Bernard Moras, in his inaugural mass highlighted   the quality of  life and   services which will make the Sister Doctors different from the other doctors- viz. dedication and commitment, seeing Christ in the poor and the sick, fighting for human rights, compassion ,selfless service  without looking for success, and above all remaining faithful to the covenantal love.

The Panel Session on the theme, ‘A Sr. Doctor – A Doctor with a difference’ was very interesting and thought provoking.

This was followed by Strategic planning facilitated by Fr. Alex, Dr. Dominic Misquith and Dr. Ravindran. It was focused on SDFI trying to answer the questions - Who are we? Where were we? Where we want to go?

The CME Programme on the following topics: Common Medico Legal problems, infectious Diseases, Infertility, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases was much appreciated.

The copy of the CME programme has been published in the SDFI Newsletter.

ACTIVITIES IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS

Commission for Health, CBCI: Meeting of Board members with CBCI Health

commission/CMMB representatives: Fr. Mathew Abraham/Rose Mary/Dr. John Tharakan on Nov 8th 2009. Fr. Mathew graciously offered help to bring SDFI to the National Front in the following areas:

Laison with the Government, specifically with involvement in NRHM immediately and launch the SDFI partnership on the national level

Preparation of Anaemia project and reporting and identifying the funders for the same

Management information system which is very important to document the tremendous contribution sister doctors are making towards health and development in the most underserved areas where the Government is unable to make an impact.

Registration of SDFI as a TRUST in Delhi as office head quarters

Training in office management and documentation etc for Sr. Susan if her accommodation is taken care of.

CBCI will offer online subscriptions for journals for SDFI members

Provide internet data card for SDFI members CBCI will help us organize the AGBM in Delhi

considering the opportunity for national visibility and easy availability of National level resource persons. Event management in conducting national level workshop/AGBM

TB Control Collaboration with CBCI/CHAI/Government

The first impact TB programme was officially launched on July 8th 2008 at the Habitat centre in Delhi. Under this programme eleven states have been taken up by CBCI in the first phase.

Andhra Pradesh Assam Bihar Chhattisgarh Jharkand Karnataka Madhya Pradesh Orissa Rajasthan Uttar Pradesh West Bengal Each state has a State TB Program Coordinator

Sr. Drs. Prema Devaraj and Eileen have been appointed as State TB programme coordinators for the States of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand respectively.

The goal: TO INVOLVE ALL Catholic Health Facilities (Health Centres/Hospitals) as per their capacity in the various schemes in the

REVISED NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL PROGRAMME (RNTCP).

In various states the Sr. Drs are collaborating in the Government Programmes namely HIV / AIDS, ICTC, TB and Malaria control, STI clinics and running care and support homes etc.

HIV/AIDS Coalition with other Agencies

SDFI is one of the founder member of All India Catholic Coalition of AIDS and Related Diseases (AICCARD), which was launched also on July 8th at Habitat Centre, Delhi. It will be registered as a Society, an independent unit of CBCI. The membership would include all the Catholic Health Organizations. SDFI was represented by Sr. Drs Lina and Prema Devaraj.

Dr. Lina had attended several meetings and she had been called to read the citation and gave the blessed Mother teresa International humantarian award to UN ambassador Mark Dybul, in Feb’ 2008.

TALMIL NADU July 12-13 ’08 Human Universal Energy:

Sr. Dr. Hermina Through correct breathing exercise, the

Chakras are opened up allowing free flow of energy to heal oneself and others. HUE – HEALING IS A MEANS TO ACHIEVE THE KINGDOM OF GOD IN OUR HEARTS AND LIVE IN HARMONY AND PEACE.

A certificate of completion of the HUE levels 1- 5 was given to the participants.

ANDHRA PRADESH: 14 Sister Doctors attended regional meeting 25th, 26th Oct

In CHAI, Secunderabad. Sharing:

Most involved in significant contribution in the service of HIV/AIDS patients.

Sr. Dr. Francis JMJ shared about her experience in serving the victims of Orissa carnage.

CME Topics: Management of post partum collapse, Dr. Balamba Maternal mortality and medico legal aspects, Dr. Jamuna Devi Stem cell therapy, Sr. Dr. Susheela Gayam Positive attitude and hard work, Dr. Gurunath

ACTIVITIES AT THE REGIONAL LEVELS WESTERN REGION 15 SISTERS ATTENDED THE CME HELD AT st. joseph’s

convent , Bandra on Participatory Rapid appraisal by Fr. Brian D’Silva SJEach member spoke about their vision and Objectives, Which were prioritized through pair wise ranking.

CENTRAL REGION: Nine sisters attended the reg. meet on Nov 9th 2008 in Navjyoti

Niketan, Patna, Bihar. Members shared their activities: HIV/AIDS awareness programe Community Care Centres Blindness prevention program through regular cataract surgery School Health Social action through women’s empowerment: SHGs Regular hospital work Flood relief in Madhepura, Shapur in BiharAction Plan for 2009: Awareness on Anaemia prevention and

treatment in a target group, by first doing baseline HB survey followed by worm treatment and iron supplementation

The CME on the previous day was on Anaemia scientifically presented by Sr. Dr. Lucy SND, attended by 7 Board members, Fr. Mathew Abraham, Dr. Tharakan and Rose Mary.

NORTHERN REGION 18 Sr. Drs attended the regional meeting held at

Chetnalya, Delhi on March 1st 2009

CME: RNTCP by Dr. John Tharakan. Importance of collaboration

Sr. Dr. Prema Devaraj shared her experiences of working as state coordinator in RNTCP in C.G and also gave a brief session on Opportunities presented by Georgetown University and benefits in collaborating with them.

Capacity Building of SDFI In collaboration with CBCI and Georgetown University, Washington DC Annual get together regionally and nationally on a

regular basis (access to CMEs and workshops) Access to Tele medicine, e- learning, and creating

volunteer corps. Increase SDFI capacity to support sister doctors Expenses related to quick travel Strengthen SDFI’s organizational capacities Suggest other mechanisms to sustain efforts through

collaboration.

Establish a National Office with a full time Coordinator

Identify local catholic organizations and medical institutions that could support local sister doctors

Foster and establish institutional linkages: CBCI, CHAI, IMA etc ( to provide access to medical education programs, access to potentially useful networks of experts.

• Strengthen Information Technology for better access to

reference and educational materials

• Creating volunteer corps (Surgical, Ortho…)

• Temporary replacement program– St. John’s and other Catholic Medical Colleges by doctors on rural

service for two years – will help the sister doctors who are burnt out.

WE ARE GRATEFUL

Our Congregrations for nurturing us and helping us to became what we are today, spiritual leaders, counsellors, professionals, Risk takers and Committed Selfless Healers.

SJMC for holding our hand and guiding us during our toddler days

CHAI for giving us an office room and adminstrative help CBCI for love, concern and constant support in different

ways. CMMB which is genuinely interested in SDFIs welfare

and furthering its growth by financially supporting us DON BOSCO, YELIGIRI for the excellent website of SDFI Mr. Anthony LLB (Sr. Dr. Hermina’s brother) who

initiated the process for the registration of SDFI as a TRUST. He made the first draft and later on completed by Mr. Martin Pinto by registering SDFI in Delhi.
