A WALKROUND THE OLD TOWN

The salt water came from BadReichenhall via a wooden pipeline.The opening of the railway linesMunich–Innsbruck and Munich –Salzburg (1857–1860) wasRosenheim’s beginning as acommercial and cultural centre ofsouth-east Bavaria with about 60,000inhabitants.

The history of Rosenheim beganwith the Romans who built a bridgeacross the river Inn near their fort»Pons Aeni«. Name and coat of armsof the town come from the white roseof the arms of the Earls of Wasserburgwho, in 1234, built a castle nearRosenheim. Salt trade and navigationon the river Inn were the sourcesof prosperity in the Middle Ages.In 1810 salt works were installed inRosenheim.

The Salingarten in front of the Cultureand Congress Centre has developedinto a sculptur garden since 1987,showing pieces of art in various sizesby famous local sculptors.

The Hl. Geist church was founded bythe citizen Hans Stier in 1449.After 1684 the Gothic church wasdecorated with Baroque elements.The tower – originally crowned witha Gothic top – got a Baroque onion.The picture Volto-Santo (a painting»al-secco« dating from the 15thcentury) up in the chapel St. Wolfgangis worth seeing.

b) The houses in Max-Josefs-Platzwere built after the disastrous fire of1641 (they partly date back to the14th/ 15th century). Former narrowwooden buildings were put togetherto imposing two-storied stone houses.In the 19th century a third storey wasadded to many of the beautifulpatrician houses and the decorationof the façades was altered.c) On the signboard of the inn»Stockhammer« you can see ahistorical convoy of boats.For centuries flat-bottomed woodenbarges – mostly loaded with corn –were pulled up the river Inn by horses.

Pedestrian PrecinctNowadays the Max-Josefs-Platz –in former times the Inner market andmarket place – is the »living room«of Rosenheim. Since 1984 thehistorical market square has beenreserved for pedestrians.a) The Max-Josefs-Platz is surroundedby beautiful »Inn-Salzach« buildings.Typical for this architectural style arethe archways (with pointed, roundand flat arches), vaults inside thehouses, bay-windows and saddle roofsbehind high front walls.

d) The patrician house »Zum Santa«– its Gothic core had already beenaltered in 1642 – was decorated withRococo façade in 1745. In therestaurant the Gothic vaults are wellpreserved.The present façade is a mixture ofthe original rococo façade of 1745and a Neo-Rococo decoration of the19th century.e) From 1641–1878 house No. 22was the town hall of Rosenheim.A relief shows the house with aBaroque gable which was alteredby a reconstruction after 1878.The corn sacks on the relief remindus of the busy trading in themarket place.

f) The house »Bergmeister« with itssplendid corner windows wasRosenheim’s parsonage for a periodof about 100 years.The Rococo door on Hl. Geist-Streetin the Late Gothic arch are worthseeing.g) In front of the house »Bergmeister«there is a fountain with a Late Rococostatue of St. Nepomuk, one of thepatron saints of the river-navigators.

Before 1350 the Mittertor (it is theonly gate still in existence) was theeast gate of Rosenheim. It wassurrounded by two moats.From the 15th century it separatedthe Inner Market from the OuterMarket and was the seat of themunicipal administration. The onion-crowned tower was added after 1641,later the long building was altered.In its core the Mittertor is the oldestbuilding in the town. Today it is hometo the Municipal Museumwith a unique collection beginningwith the Romans up to Rosenheim’shistory in the 20th century.On the façade pointing to Ludwigs-platz you can see on the left the coatof arms of Rosenheim – the whiterose on red background – and on theright the coat of arms of Bavaria.

The Ludwigsplatz was part of the so-called Outer Market that developedin the 15.th century as a result of thegrowth of the town.

The St. Joseph church was foundedin 1618/1619 by the citizen SimonPeer. The church burned down in1641. It was rebuilt by Andreas Peer,the founder’s son. In the middle ofthe 18th century the originalfurnishings were replaced: it wasequipped with a Baroque altar, aRococo pulpit and pictures from thelocal painter Joseph Anton Höttingershowing the life of St. Joseph.

The parish church St. Nikolaus wasbuilt in Late-Gothic style with apointed Gothic tower around 1450.1641 fire damage.1642–1657 rebuilding of the churchand the tower (with a Baroque onion)– nowadays the landmark of Rosen-heim. The furnishings were changedseveral times according to thecontemporary taste in Baroque andlater in Neo-Gothic style.In 1880 the nave was lengthenedby three bays in the direction ofLudwigsplatz. 1960 was thebeginning of redesign works on theinterior.The oldest work of art is the painting»Our Blessed Lady and Her ProtectiveCape« dating from 1514.

Founded in 1935 by the citizen MaxBram, it belongs to the finest galleriesin Bavaria. Every year there are sixart exhibitions ranging from modernart to ancient art plus a wide-rangingfringe programme (concerts, readings,guided tours, educationalprogrammes). The focus is onexhibitions showing regional art.Open:Tuesday–Sunday10 a.m.–5 p.m.(Closed on Monday and holiday)

The town hall has an eventful history:After a construction time of threeyears the building was opened in1858.It was the first railway station inRosenheim. At that time it wasregarded as one of the prettieststation buildings in Bavaria. But assoon as 1878 the building was usedfor another purpose – it becameRosenheim’s town hall. Since thenthe building has been altered severaltimes.

From 1857–1878 the Lokschuppenwas the engine round house nextto the station.The building was renovated in 1988.Since that time it has developedinto the most renowned exhibitioncentre in south-east Bavaria.Every year most attractive andexhaustive cultural as well ascommercial exhibitions are held here.Open during exhibitions:Monday–Friday9 a.m.–6 p.m.Saturday, Sunday, holiday10 a.m.–6 p.m.

The Culture and Congress Centre hasbeen built on the site of a formerCapuchin monastery which existedfrom 1604–1803. This was closedduring the secularization and themonastery buildings with the churchwere demolished.In 1810 salt works were erected onthe spot and in operation up to 1958.The salt works to which the salt waterwas transported by means of awooden pipeline about 110 km longwas one of the foundations for theindustrialisation of Rosenheim. In1967 the buildings were demolishedto be replaced by the culture centre– one of the most importantinstitutions for all kinds of events.It was opened in 1982.1997 it was enlarged by the congresscentre.
