I don’t know if everyone has the same feeling, but it sure seems to be flying by. I hope it has been as good of start for all of you as it has been for me. The kids, parents, board members, community, and staff have been great to work with. One of the major projects the School Board has been working on is the gym room. I am not sure how long the gym roof has been leaking, but I know the first summer I started it has been leaking. Thankfully, the board understands that we cannot just let our school go by the wayside. After carefully exploring the options, the board has come to a conclusion to install a new roof. One reason that the board had a hard time making this decision was also due to the fact that cur- rently all state funding is looking at a 5-10% budget cut this next biennium with education currently being the only exception. After talking with a few different lobbies that have been watching this issue for education, it is sounding like education is going to soon follow the other stated funded entities. My question of the day, does anyone

know where August and September have

gone? I don’t know if everyone has the same feeling, but it sure seems to be flying by. I hope it

has been as good of start for all of you as it has been for me. The kids, parents, board members,

community, and staff have been great to work with.

One of the major projects the School Board has been working on is the gym room. I am not sure

how long the gym roof has been leaking, but I know the first summer I started it has been leaking.

When helping with the Candisc there was a rain storm and I remember searching the school for

ey. Thankfully, the board understands that we cannot just let our school go by the wayside. After

carefully exploring the options, the board has come to a conclusion to install a new roof.

One reason that the board had a hard time making this decision was also due to the fact that cur-

rently all state funding is looking at a 5-10% budget cut this next biennium with education currently

being the only exception. After talking with a few different lobbies that have been watching this

issue for education, it is sounding like education is going to soon follow the other stated funded

entities. The cost to continue K12 public education state aid at the levels of the 2015-2017 bienni-

Hello October! Fall is my favorite time of year with all the beautiful colors of leaves and cool, crisp air. We are

all settling in to our classroom routines and procedures and it is evident there is a lot of learning going on. The

teachers are dedicated and passionate about enhancing your child’s learning experience at Wing School.

I have been co-teaching writing with Miss Kuhn in 3rd & 4th Grade. They students now have an office 365 email

account, which also provides free Microsoft Office programs. We have incorporated technology into our writing

pieces by using Storybird and Haiku Deck. Ask your child to present their fine masterpieces to you! I am work-

ing with Mrs. Fox in 5th & 6th grade math as well as Mrs. Witt in 2nd Grade Science & Social Studies. Look out

Mrs. Quale and Mrs. Schill, I’m on my way to your classroom next!

We will begin NWEA MAP testing to measure the progress of student achievement. Our elementary team will

be meeting to analyze the data results. We did a STAR Reading and Math assessment in the beginning of

September and the results are fantastic! We look forward to sharing all of your child’s growth at Parent-

Teacher Conferences on October 19th from 2:00-8:00.

Reminder…as the weather is getting cooler, please make sure your child has the necessary attire to stay warm.

It is better to have extra clothing, coats, gloves than to be without and be cold. Here’s to another great month!

1st Grade News ~ Mrs. Schill

I just love fall in the classroom! The air is crisp and students seem to be refreshed on their learning

from the year before. We will NWEA Map test this month and have a better picture of the learning

goals we need to set in the coming months.

Our students are rewarded monthly with a behavior party and the theme is cho-

sen by the student that has earned the most incentive stickers. This month Bri-

anna chose the tea party theme after hearing about the tea party the second

graders had last year. We invited a few of her family members, her sisters, the

principal, and a few staff members.

Fall art in the 1st grade classroom has varied from a sketch drawing using lines and

curves to oil pastels and paint. We even used real pepper to represent the seeds

on the sunflower paintings.

In science we grew our own version of the Chia Pet. We shower

them daily and cut their hair to our liking once a week.

1st graders have started to implement a school wide program called, The

Zones of Regulation. Each of the four zones represents emotions and stu-

dents identify the circumstances that influence our reactions or emotions.

The point is to make students aware that there are appropriate reactions to

various circumstances. A “little problem” may make us feel like we are in the yellow zone

while a “large problem” may send us reeling into the red zone. A restless night of sleep

may send us into the blue zone. While looking through magazines we found that

most pictures were taken of people while in the green zone.

Thanks to all of the parents and students who participated in the

Southern McLean Roughrider Homecoming activities!

Greetings & Kindergarten Happenings ~ Mrs. Quale

Another few weeks have come and gone! We have been having a great time and

have been very busy. Here are a few things we have been up to.

We went to a tea party in the 1st grade this week. We talked about manners we use

at home when we are eating, and at school and were given the chance to practice putting those manners

to use.

The kids had a math test. The test consisted of them counting as high as they could. They did great!

They also had a test in social studies the unit was about communities.

Each child has brought home a few books this week the books were called “We Can”. They are doing

great reading the words. Please continue to practice reading these stories with them. At school once we

get to a story we first read it together, then they read the story to each other, and then they are allowed

to read the story to one other person in the building.

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions, or concerns you have with your child or

things at school.

We're already approaching the end of the first quarter of the school year. It's been going by fast! In early October, students will be finishing up on major projects relating to the book they have been reading in class and reading skills that they have been learning about. The 7th grade stu-dents are writing children's stories and letters to fictional characters, the 8th and 10th grade stu-dents have been working on reading logs, the 9th grade students are writing reviews, juniors and seniors are writing a critical analysis paper, and students in business English are finishing up on business proposals. These assignments are worth a substantial part of their quarter and semester grades, so it is important that students put extra effort into these projects. The end of the first quarter also means that students will need to wrap up the necessary reading points for these first few weeks. Students received an informational handout detailing the expec-tations for their independent reading points, and if parents or students have questions on the ex-pectations for this, please let Mr. Schock know as soon as possible. Reading points are an im-portant part of the English class grade, because the best way to become a better reader is to read more. Parents should be aware that half of the students' quarter grade is determined by complet-ed reading points and success with major projects. The class website continues to be updated regularly with due dates, important documents, and online resources. In addition to using a class planner, students should refer to the class website as necessary to plan ahead. Mr. Schock's email address is also located on the website. Please email any questions you might have! This year's drama club has decided to perform the one-act play "The Velocity of Sin." The one-act play revolves around a group of people who, for some unknown reason, are all moving at differ-ent speeds and face difficulty communicating with one another. We will be performing "The Ve-locity of Sin" for the Wing community at a to be determined date. Students participating in drama will begin morning practices in October. We're excited to get started! Drama is a team activity, so each individual member is vital. Parents should know that students in drama need to maintain good academic standing and should attend as many morning meetings as possible. Here's to a second great month of learning in English class! : ) I look forward to seeing you at par-

ent-teacher conferences, coming up in just a few weeks!
