"It was a slow run on grass and slippery mud," said last year'spro champion Conrad Stoltz from South Africa. "Inside the forestI couldn't believe how slippery it was. I fell on the run inside thishuge big muddy pool, skidded down and lost my glasses in the

bushes somewhere. It was really funny, I enjoyed it."New for this year are the corporate and YMCA branch team challenges so get together with your co-workers and take on

another company! Proceeds from the Scrambles benefit the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee Mentoring Programs.Awards go to the top three in each age group, plus team awards for the largest corporate and YMCA branch teams

XTERRA found an urban jewel of acourse in Milwaukee.

Reminiscent of the James Rivercourse in Richmond, the scene forthis race is the sparkling city ofMilwaukee.

Veterans Park is the compound, transition, and finish site with the 1.5kilometer swim in Lake Michigan atMcKinley beach about 300-metersaway.

The beauty is in the bike course.

Milwaukee County created amagnificent fantastic trail system, theOak Leaf, using a long surrendered

railway bed that literally bisects the city asit travels parallel to the Milwaukee River. While the principal trail is paved or gravel, there are true and technical trails with lotsof ups and downs that will give the bestbikers a hearty challenge.

Out on the run athletes will encountersteep ravines and twisty trails intermixedwith fabulous views of the city center.

On August 6 in Milwaukee some of the world’s best triathletes, mountain bikers, trailrunners, and adventure racers will collide in the consummate individual challenge foroutdoor athletes. MEN’S FAVORITESThe Caveman is Back! After sitting out the first race of the season with injuries, Conrad

“the Caveman” Stoltz returned for race No. 2 and finished 4th in Alabama despite notbeing in top form and a week later won the East Championship in Richmond. If he’shealthy he’s hard to stop, but Stoltz is still chasing the current Points leader BrentMcMahon. The Canadian Olympic triathlete won the first XTERRA championship of theseason in California on May 21 in dominating fashion, followed that with another win inAlabama and fell to second behind Stoltz in Richmond. The 25-year-old is the fastestswimmer in the sport, consistently in the top five off the bike, and runs like the wind -thus, the ultimate threat. Seth Wealing has become America’s best chance at victory.Wealing recently retired from World Cup racing to turn his focus off-road. Wealing isalways at the front of the pack during the swim and has the legs to go fast on the bikeand run as well. It would not be surprising to see him finish on top of the pack thisseason. In this particular race watch out for Mexico’s Francisco Serrano. He wassecond here last year and held the lead through a good portion of the run before gettingchased down by Stoltz. He races well in the heat, and just won the inaugural XTERRAMexico Championship. A very fit looking, 40-year-young XTERRA vet Andrew Noblemade a splash in the opener with a 5th place finish, and got better from there with a 3rdin Alabama and a fourth in Richmond. He’s sitting in 3rd for the Series. Canadian MikeVine - who won the XTERRA Mountain Championship last year and was second only toStoltz in the US Pro Series standings, was slowed by injuries in Temecula and Alabamabut should be much faster and in contention for the overall in Milwaukee. You can also count on strong showings from Americans Dominic Gillen and Justin Thomas, andmountain bike specialist Brian Smith.

WOMEN FAVORITESJamie Whitmore won here last year...by 24 seconds over Melanie McQuaid. In that

race McQuaid took a costly wrong turn on the run that cost her time and the title, asWhitmore chased her down during the last stretch of sand before the finish. McQuaidwill come to this one on a mission to even the Pro series points standings as a victorywould put her back in a tie for the top spot. Whitmore picked up her 30th careerXTERRA victory (all-time record holder for wins) at Mexico in June. Whitmore andMcQuaid are so closely matched up that any little slip could make the difference and itcertainly makes for exciting race day drama. Candy Angle, the 2002 XTERRA WorldChampion, finished 3rd in Temecula, Alabama, and Richmond, and is always in positionto take advantage of mistakes. Melissa Thomas, a perenniel podium perfomer, can becounted on to have a solid race and end up in the top five somewhere. Danelle Kabushhas used a strong run in the last couple races to position herself 4th in the Pro Series.Jennifer Smith, a mountain bike specialist like her husband, is back and a threat.

Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one eventin his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one Nissan XterraChampionship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the NissanXterra Points Series races. There are two points systems:

Nissan Xterra Championship Series:

Nissan Xterra Points Series:

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the Nissan Xterra USAChampionship in Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age groupin each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

THE 11th NISSAN XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Following an action-packed racing season that will span 17 countries with morethan 100 events, XTERRA will host its 11th Nissan Xterra World Championshipin Maui on October 29th. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the WorldChampionship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan,South Africa, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, New Zealand, Austria, Italy,France, Denmark, England, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will

consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Makena Beach, a grueling 30-kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trailrun. Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day.Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage torepeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the mostintimidating in the series.

The maxed-out field is limited to 500 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with oneof the richest pro purses in multisport at $125,000, and it is awarded solely onthe basis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, itoffers a unique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a lessthan stellar season, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn thecoveted title of XTERRA World Champion.

Last year Nicolas LeBrun of France captured the men’s championship andMelanie McQuaid from Canada won her second world championship in threeyears.

A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man andwoman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA WorldChampionship time. Only eight days and a narrow channel of ocean separatethe two events, which each year attract a growing number of endurance athletes. In 2005, Canada’s Peter Reid won the men’s double and Australia’s Kate Majorwon the women’s double.

CBS will be there to televise all the action for a one-hour "CBS SportsSpectacular" which will air on the weekend of the Super Bowl in 2007.

THE WORLD OF XTERRAAt the finish line of the very first race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA wasgoing to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes ofthe competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined tobecome a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructuredthe company to keep it growing. Look at where XTERRA is today…

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 17 countries in a 10-year spanincluding a 50-stop U.S. series for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour.

- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them startedtowards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus thechance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garnerthe attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateurnational champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the Nissan Kids Base Camp. It's a free schedule of events with runningand bike races, clinics on how to be safe, climbing walls, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors andactive.

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over theworld with inspiring images of fun activities in great places.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, withraces in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game sowe selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We recently re-created XTERRAPlanet.com, whichis soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure.

- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profitspecifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Scramble Trail Run Series. Thisyear there are more than 30 5k and 10k fun runs reaching into 18 major metropolitan cities in America - providingmore chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- The movement is growing rapidly, and has extended to events like the Nevada Passage Wide Open (an adventurecompetition and TV show in Nevada created for the everyday warriors.

IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when TomKiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers ofXTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for theWaikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV."First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? - The beaches and the ocean,"explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports andentertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world. The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.Bring those two together in programming, and you've gotsomething big.So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition thatattracted water safety specialists from Australia, NewZealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forgeda relationship with ESPN - the worldwide leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty ofWaikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of thePacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," saysKiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes andTV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TVshows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping thebenefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven HawaiianSports Adventure Shows…multiple segments, differentstories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, goodfun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the OceanChallenge and a few others televised events, including theinaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now themanaging director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The TourO' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists wereallowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders fromevery country kept their amateur status so they could racein the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signedwith Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountainbiking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TVshows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced theHawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-FamerDean Crandall established the rules and held the first-evermountain bike stage race. This is also where many of theXTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in theHawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place atKualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain rangemeets the ocean, and the story goes that after their racesthe mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jumpin the water. It sparked a thought…why not have amountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-roadtriathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now theWailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea fortheir grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau waslooking for a new event that could tell a different story aboutMaui's south shore because all the exposure up to that pointwas golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel andsouth shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beachin front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TVfor the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in themarketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the verysubject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have allthe main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of opportuni-ty and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and VP ofMarketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they werethinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we'reforever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. Iimmediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I'vegot the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."
