AHEAD OF THE CURVE _For more than three decades, we’ve been at the leading edge of space-based communications technology. Set up by the International Maritime Organization back in 1979 to provide communications and safety services for seafarers sailing beyond the reach of land-based radio, we went on to form the satellite cornerstone of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in the 1990s. Since then, we’ve grown to support global connectivity in aviation, military and civilian government organisations, as well as a wide variety of businesses – from banking to media and mining.

With our experience and ability to innovate, we can provide a service that functions like no other. And at the nucleus of it all is the understanding that security, reliability and affordability are of paramount importance – that connectivity must be not just powerful, but trusted – because lives depend on it.

AviationToday, the aviation community represents the fastest growing sector for Inmarsat satellite communications, with over 16,000 aircraft already equipped. For passengers, we enable them to make phone calls and access the Internet in the air, just as they would on the ground. For Europe specifically, we have plans to introduce advanced passenger connectivity via a new satellite being built to operate in the S-band frequency. We ensure pilots can stay in contact with air traffic control, receive real-time weather information, access the most fuel-efficient oceanic flight paths, and send the aircraft’s position and maintenance status to ground staff.

Inmarsat was the first operator to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s requirements for global safety communications. We have also offered ICAO a free global airline tracking service over our network. And today, most of the world’s leading airlines rely on Inmarsat for aviation safety.
