For many years, the Bridge nominated and awarded Certificates of Appreciation to our members. This honor is above and beyond the Merit Mark process. Many of the nominees were submitted by multiple Bridge members. Many are Chairs and fulfill significant roles in multiple areas. Here is an alphabetical listing. The actual certificates will be awarded, after dinner, at our December meeting. Congratulations to all recipients. I would urge each and every member of the squadron to sign up for at least one class a year. Most classes have been recently revised with excellent manuals (and CP, AP, JN and ID will soon be) and would be very interesting, even for people who have taken them before.

I have had some inquiries about JN – please let me know if you are interested so I can set up a class.

For more information about each course, you can go to www.usps.org ? site index ? education home page, where you will see the courses listed on the left column. Click on the course you are interested in, including downloads.

We are asking people who wish to take a course to register with me at least three weeks in advance so I can order the correct number of student kits. If people decide after that to take a course, they can still sign up, but I will order the manuals after the fact, so it may be several days into the course before the manuals arrive.

Current activities: ABC started October 2 with 14 students. We started Sail (6 students) (with the help of Jerry Wasserman, a former member and excellent sailor) and Seamanship (8 students) in October. Ron Ziller and Tom Nolan P are conducting our second On the Water Boating class on November 3,4. He is planning to continue these 8 hour classes which include 4 hours on the water on a regular basis, so please let him know if you are interested in taking this course. Engine Maintenance begins December 5. Please let me know if you are interested in taking this class by Jim Sanislo which will teach you how to trouble shoot and fix problems with your motor(s).

We are restarting the two hour seminars we have begun at Marine Max. We are having two types of seminars at Marine Max in Pompano Beach. We are going to repeat our seminars about fun-damentals at 7 pm on Thursday evenings and our more advanced seminars at 10 am on Saturday mornings:

Thursday, November 15, 7 pm. Mastering Rules of the Road Saturday, December 8, 10 am. Basic Weather and Forecasting Saturday, January 26, 10 am. Partner in Command Saturday, April, date to be announced, 10 am. Marine RADAR Thursday, May, date to be announced, 7 pm. How to Read a Chart

If you are interested, please contact Howard Kaufman. We also hope to begin the seminars at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. More to follow.

We would like to do our second annual CPR and first aid class in February, so please let me know if you are interested.

We now have our AED, which is in a box (with an alarm if opened) over the piano in the main room, and we will teach you how to use it.

The schedule is posted on the cork board near the entrance of our building.

By convention, the first class of every course will start at 7:30 pm. The start time of the rest of the classes can be negotiated between the instructor and students.

We do have some prerequisite for courses for grade. You must take ABC before P, you must take P before AP or JN, and you must take JN before N. Otherwise you can take any course at any time.

A glossary of nautical terms is now available on the web site. It should be very helpful if you run across a word you are unfamiliar with. Thanks to Ron Ray for scanning it from the old version of the ABC manual and Bob Garito for posting it.

Ronnie Babin has volunteered to help Scott Cleary set up and take down the main room for the boat-ing classes. His help is much appreciated. These fellows are unsung heroes.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT By Lt/C Thomas Nolan, S

Al Furtado has informed the squadron that, due to other responsibilities, he will no longer be able to be the head of the Vessel Safety Check Depart-ment. He will be missed. He made my job as Executive Officer very easy. The squadron will miss Al. He made vessel safety checks one of the squadron’s strongest points. He had a way to make all examiners feel that their work was

all-important and needed in the community. Good luck, Al.

This is the month that the work towards the change of watch is kicking into high gear. That means it’s time to buy tickets to our gala, sell raffle tickets, and solicit donations for our raffle prizes. If all goes well, we will have a second, special raffle that will be just for a ride in the Goodyear Blimp. We’re keeping our fingers crossed and looking forward to it. All in all, it should be a very festive, gala occasion to thank the outgoing bridge and to welcome in the new bridge. Please get your reservations in early.

The nominating committee has announced their choices for the new bridge. You will have a chance to vote for the slate at the December meeting. Lets give all our support to whoever is elected. The bridge donates a lot of time to the squadron, so let’s all help them by donating time and energy. Even a little will help. This will make each new bridge member’s job easier, and make the squadron a lot stronger. I have been chosen as the nominee for Commander and, if I am elected, I hope to be able to serve the squadron to the best of my ability, but I need everyone’s help because this is everyone’s squadron. The harder we work for the Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron, the better the Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron will be.

Lee and I were saddened to hear that P/C Ken Rice, died after a long illness. He had not come to any meetings lately, so the newer members do not know him, but years ago when a lot of retirees were in the squadron, we had a large group of us who used to go boating a lot. Ken and Vivian were part of that group and we all practiced our boating skills. He was ill for some time and now he is at peace.

Judy Pinkston is still taking tests, and we are all praying for her. She has a good attitude.Denise Porter is feeling better and we hope she continues that way. If you or anyone you know is ill, please let me know so that I can send a card to them.

I hope you all stay well and happy and stay out of this column!

a nastY scam, esPeciallY at christmas. VERY INTERESTING THING TO WATCH OUT FOR!

By Larry Knight (From the Internet)

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR RECEIPTS - THIS IS IMPORTANT. WITH THE CHRISTMAS SEASON COMING UP, THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG!!!!! CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING ANY CASHIER’S STATION!!!!! THIS COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE. It happened at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston, TX 77037 a month ago. I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her I didn’t request a cash back & to delete it. She said I’d have to take the $40 as she couldn’t delete it. I told her to call a supervisor. Supervisor came & said I’d have to take it! I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover card & I wasn’t paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn’t delete it then they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective. (yeah, right!) Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad wasn’t defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning. Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed? Just to alert everyone. My coworker went to Milford , DE Wal-Mart last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn’t give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My coworker didn’t look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK! My coworker called Wal-Mart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her This is a new scam. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in line. Please, check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards! This is NOT limited to Wal-Mart, although they are the largest retailer so they have the most incidents.

I am adding to this....My husband and I were in Wal-Mart North Salisbury and paying with a credit card. When my husband went to sign the credit card signer, he just happened to notice there was a $20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We didn’t think anything of it until we read this email. I wonder how many “seniors” have been, or will be, “stung” by this one????

THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LOCATION!

DORIS’ DISK & DATA By Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, Editor

2012DEC DiskdataBy Doris

Some people complain to me that time goes by slowly and boringly. There is a reason for that. People who never leave their own houses seem to be plagued by

this dilemma. My friends don’t complain, as they all agree that time goes very fast, and suddenly it is Christmas. My family and friends are all volunteers, one way or another. New ideas and friends end boredom. So, you figure out what to do to end any possible boredom.

It seems as though just yesterday we came down to South Florida to find a house and a berth for the QUICKIE III. One of the first things we did was look up the people we knew in the South Shore Power Squadron, our old squadron in Long Island, NY. We called the Oelrich’s, and they invited us to see their place in Lighthouse Point. It was unusual as it had a swimming pool in their Florida room, half inside the house, and half outside the house. Ella told us where we could find a berth for the boat at a dock facing the Intracoastal. Then we had dinner with the Aboumrads. He was SEO for PBPS, and invited us to join the squadron as he needed George as a teacher.

Whenever George taught a class, I always went as the secretary for the class, grading papers, etc. In no time at all, George and I were part of the squadron, but I only had a Woman’s Certificate. I had never joined up north, even though I had taken classes. I thought it was great to see men doing all their own work at rendezvous and meetings.

Many people at this squadron had been former members of our old squadron, and they were very cordial to us. George was a very knowledgeable sailor, having spent six years at sea on a cruiser, where he had studied the stars and could navigate without instruments, if the need arose. He was also a good mechanic, so others relied on him. He seemed to have built-in radar, and on a trip he could see buoys long before the rest of us. No problem stumped him. His presence always made people feel safe with him.

I volunteered to help Seth Towbis, the Secretary, do the computer work. He helped me learn the big computer we had at the squadron. We did all the jobs of the secretary’s department. Seth had modernized the department by putting it on the computer. Prior to Seth, the work was done by hand, which meant typing, pasting, etc. That included doing the MARINER by that method, then printing it in the office, collating and mailing it. That was a lot of work, and the Post Office always gave us a hard time. We also did membership.

I joined the squadron and took over as Secretary. After a few years, Judy Pinkston became my assistant. She was a better typist than I, so that was a huge help. I had always worked in an accounting department when I worked, so I was familiar with spreadsheets, and had no trouble working with the roster. Since the Post Office gave us a lot of trouble, and Judy and I even had trouble transporting the MARINER to the P. O., it was decided to have a printer do the work of

DECEMBER 2012 PBPS MARINER PAGE 13

printing and mailing. Judy and I did all the work right in the office, and the retired gentlemen who manned the office daily were very impressed with our dedication . Lt Emil Jensen, S, would do-nate $1500.00 every year, and say it was because we were so diligent. Time passed. Other people volunteered to do the Roster, the Calling Committee, Membership and the minutes. During the years, I was lucky enough to get dedicated people take over some of those committees: the Auxiliary Ladies, the Devanes, Jan Furtado, Debbie Knight, Arlene Ziller, Jack Doyle and Barbara Garito. There were others, but they are no longer members.

During my long association with the Squadron, I made many good friends and did a lot of work, but I truly enjoyed my time with all of you. This has been a wonderful Squadron and I am always proud to be a part of it.

WHAT NOT TO DO WITH YOUR CELL PHONESBy P/Lt /C Doris Garner, AP

Cell phones were a great invention. For thousands of years, there was no such thing as a cell phone and then it was invented! Great. It served a real need in many ways, but it also had a dangerous side. Cell phones have never been tested for radiation safety, only for their impact on temperature. Phones are tested to see how much heat they emit in two positions: held ten millimeters from the ear, or carried in a holster on the hip and held nearly an inch off the body. However both the skull and hip have thick bones, which don’t absorb radiation well. In contrast, fat does absorb radiation. The study recommended that you keep your phone off as much as possible, so it is not sending or receiving signals, as it is emitting radiation. Especially limit cell phone use in areas with weak signals. Cell phones are programmed to work harder, which means they are emitting more radia-tion when signal strength is low. Carry your phone in a purse or hip holster, preferably in a pouch with radiation blocking diffusing material. But whatever you do, keep that phone out of your bra, which some young girls do when they don’t have a pocket!

Are you close to a college degree or just want to learn some Ocean Engineering? Then consider enrolling for one of the following on-line courses through the University of Massachusetts Lowell:

22.486 ocean engineering (undergraduate), or 22.584 ocean engineering (graduate)

Both are three credit college courses offered through the Mech. Eng. Dept. You should have the prerequi-sites of two semesters Calculus and a course in Physics or Fluid Mechanics, but you can tackle it without these if you want. The course runs from Jan 22 – May 13, 2013. To obtain a syllabus, please email Gene Niemi, P; member Pompano Power Squadron at [email protected] or call me at 978-337-4415. Special student registration and fees run about $1500. Ken was a Korean War veteran who was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1953. He met and married Vivian DeBord in 1955 in Ohio.

They moved to Florida in 1972 where he and Vivian owned and operated their own company, K. F. Rice & Son Plumbing Co., in Pompano Beach.

He earned a Service Award for 55 years in the Plumber’s Union. He also served as President of the South Florida Plumbers’ Association.

He served on the bridge and became Commander of the Pompano Beach Power Squadron in 1990. Other memberships include the American Legion, Elks and YMCA.

He was an avid sailor and a certified scuba diver. He trained for the Boston Marathon. His hob-bies were gourmet cooking and wood working. An animal lover, his pet charity is listed below.

He had many friends and was known for his sharp intellect, humor, kindness, generosity and hard work.

That part was copied from his obituary on the internet. We knew him as a man who worked for the squadron and was well liked. He and Vivian joined in all the events and were part of the boating crowd and were very congenial people.

They got along very well with everyone and were devoted to each other. We saw a lot of them both at the squadron and at all the boating events until Vivian passed away on November 18, 2006.

He met Karen Julius, who has been a devoted and loving companion since 2007. His was a life well-loved and well-lived.

He is survived by his daughter Pam Wilson, son Scott and his wife Kara, grandchildren Gregory, Ethan, Grace and Owen, Ken’s sister Patricia Rice-Savage and her husband Frank of Colorado, and his companion, Karen Julius.

A memorial service is at 4:30 PM on Monday 03 Dec 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church aka (The Pink Church.)

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Broward County, 2070 Grif-fin Road, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33312

Vessel safety check cornerBy d/lt allan B. furtado, sn

As the boating season comes to an end, and the Holidays are upon us I would like to take just a moment to think back on the past 8 years. I have been given the honor to chair the VSC program for Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron. I cannot tell you how many of these articles for the Mariner I have given to dear Doris to publish. During the past years we have had as many as 19 Vessel Examiners

and they have all put out a tremendous effort in promoting Boating Safety via the program. Do you realize that Pompano Beach has performed 1,339 VSCs during that period? That is an average of 167 VSCs per year. Each and every examiner deserves a grand “Thank You” for all your work.

Today we have 14 Vessel Examiners. Members have come into the pro-gram and over a period of time decided that they wanted to go in another direction. That was all well and good for during their service we all did some outstanding work.

Today, I would like to announce my decision to remove myself as the VSC Chair. I have served for 8 years and I feel it is time that I should step aside and let someone else take over as Chairperson. I will be available to instruct the new chair in the over job responsibilities. Also I will not stop performing VSCs because I feel it is still the best program we have for introducing boaters to safety.

I would like to again thank everyone that has participated in the program for all their hard work and support and I wish you all the best in the future.

Before I put the By-line and Tag-Line to bed, Just remember one thing;

“have you had your free Vessel safety check yet?” “if not, why not?”
