AUGUST 2018 | FINE MUSIC | COVER STORY 封面故事 Leonard Bernstein once said, “I love two things: music and people. I don’t know which I love better, but I love to play with them and play for them, and to communicate with them on this deepest level which is the musical level.” Leonard Bernstein: a larger-than-life American icon and humanitarian, a flamboyant conductor and celebrated pianist, a teacher with pedagogic flair, and a versatile composer noted for his accomplishments in both the concert halls and on Broadway. Appointed the Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic at the age of 25 in 1943, Bernstein was summoned at the last minute to substitute for Bruno Walter for a live broadcast concert at the Carnegie Hall in November that same year, which marked the beginning of an extraordinary career and life in music. His work has touched generations of people, young and old, and his legacy shall live on through his recordings, publications, and his music. It all started when his aunt gave her used upright piano to the Bernstein household when he was ten years old. And the piano quickly became his ‘first love’, and an important part of his musical life. Over a period of four decades, Bernstein had written four sets of short piano pieces, called, Anniversaries, with each one of them affectionately dedicated to a friend. ‘Bernstein Anniversaries’, a tribute recital to celebrate the life and career of Bernstein, explores both his serious work and Broadway hits, and other vignettes in between. Personal letters of his will be read, and myself as pianist and presenter will be joined by clarinettist Andrew Simon and soprano Nancy Yuen.
