Dominic is an 11 year old Bay Middle School special needs student. Dominic needs a sports “trike” to get around Bay Village. He currently has a regular bike with training wheels. However, it is unsafe because it tips over when he goes around cor-ners.

Rick and Jason from Burns Auto in Bay want to build Dominic a 3-wheel trike that will be safe and balanced. If anyone wants to help towards this bike for this special 5th grader, please drop off donations at Burns Auto, 27205 Wolf Road (corner of Dover Center and Wolf) in Bay Village.

They plan on putting together a 20 inch, 3-wheel trike with a horn and red bell in time for Halloween, Dominics favorite holiday. His favorite character is Dracula. The bike is made in the U.S.A.

by Dr. Louis Malcmacher of The Healthy SmileProtect Those Pearly Whites…It’s a great time of year if you

are a sports fan. We’ve got the Cleveland Indians and the Browns to watch, and the Cavaliers prepar-ing for their pre-season. We’ve got it all going together, so let’s get out there and root for our teams.

Since we are on the topic of sports, nearly every school, starting from early elementary all the way up through college, is well into their season of sports as well. We tell patients of ours to wear some kind of protective device to protect their teeth. As is human nature, people generally think that nothing will ever happen to them. Injuries to the mouth are so com-mon in all kinds of sporting activities. Certainly when you are talking about a sport like football or hockey, a mouth guard is really, really essential. Over the years that I have practiced dentistry, it is so sad to see a young man or wom-an, who has never had a cavity in their life, all of a sudden come in with two broken front teeth that may now need root canals and crowns and will now require a lifetime

worth of dentistry. Wearing a mouth

guard is not just for kids any more as people are liv-ing longer and are health-ier. Lots of people at my age and older certainly are engaging in all kinds of sports, including racquet-ball, tennis, rugby, and everything else that is out there. I have seen people get elbowed in the mouth and break off teeth play-ing racquetball or basket-ball, so it’s not just the real rough sports where people should consider wearing a mouth guard.

The other kind of mouth guard that is used very often is for people who grind their teeth. Approxi-mately 1/3 of the popula-

tion grind their teeth in one form or another. If you are one of those with chipped teeth, easily broken fill-ings, caps or crowns that keep coming off, there is a good chance that you are a grinder. Mouth guards are commonly used in these in-stances as well.

Your teeth are one of your best investments, so it really pays to protect them whenever you are doing any kind of aggressive ac-tivity. We are happy to of-fer you a free consultation to see if you need some kind of mouth guard or if you have any other dental needs. Please feel free to contact us at 440-892-1810. We are here to help you smile.

Breaking news...There is a Presidential election this year. And while it ap-pears that this race will be very closely contested until the end, the result, Obama or Romney, takes just one layer of uncertainty off the table for American inves-tors. Investors still have fears over the European recession and debt crisis, a slowing Chinese economy, and our own Federal Re-serve and Federal Govern-ment doing everything to help the economy, even when it is not really in sound position to do so. Perhaps in consideration of these issues, that is why we have seen more than $65 billion flow out of eq-uity mutual funds through mid September of this year. (Source: Morningstar)

So, why have we seen an equity rally in the face

of these troubling issues? With recent comments out of Europe, it seems more plausible that the Euro-pean Central Bank should be able to avoid a financial panic. In China, monetary and fiscal policies are being introduced in an effort to recharge growth going into 2013. Here in the United States, in spite of our eco-nomic issues, we appear to still be on a slow expan-sion track. In fact, second quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies were the highest on record. with fixed income rates near historic lows, some investors may have turned to equities, particularly div-idend-paying equities, in search of better value.

Looking forward, there is a fear of the pending “fis-cal cliff ” here in the U.S. Basically, the term “fiscal cliff ” is used to describe the challenge that the U.S. gov-ernment will face at the end of 2012. Lawmakers can let current policy go into effect at the beginning of 2013, which means tax increases and spending cuts that are expected to weigh heavily on economic growth. An-other option is to extend some or all of the current tax rates, and cancel spend-ing cuts, which would add to the deficit. It will prob-ably take a little bit of com-promise from our lawmak-ers, which probably means last-minute patches and more arguing. If we do end up with the dangerous com-bination of higher taxes and across the board spending cuts, it could throw the U.S. back into recession in 2013. However, after the election, I expect a plan will be intro-duced to slowly reduce the

deficit, but in a meaningful way.

It may make sense to plan ahead for higher taxes and spending cuts when implementing investment strategies for next year. In the long run, our country will need budget reform so our government can get back to being a competitive advantage rather than the drawback of our economy.

If you would like to discuss investment strate-gies during these uncertain times, please contact me at [email protected] or 440-835-4170.

Your Donor Advised FundCan be the Answer to

Someone’s Prayers Each of us has the power to answer someone’s prayers. Helping others through philanthropy can take many forms, and whatever your gift – large or small, time or treasure – there is an opportunity to help. A creative way to arrange a gift is through a donor advised fund at Commu-nity West Foundation – an easy, effective tax efficient vehicle that helps you manage and carry out your charitable giving. You may want to give back to the com-munity, share your philanthropic values with your children or create a highly orga-nized center for all your gifting activities. A donor advised fund provides all of this and more so that you can focus your time and energy on making a difference. In 2011, the holders of the 55 Donor Advised Funds at the Community West Foundation showed incredible generosity in making gifts that totaled $2,000,000.00 to 83 agencies. Their commitment and con-cern inspires us all!

North Coast Health Ministry, Youth Chal-lenge and others at the Cleveland Marriott. “There is a connection between hap-piness and health within the Golden Rule,” said Dr. Post.” It is an incredibly powerful notion that extends among all cul-tures.” Dr. Post called the people in-volved in charitable work “the salt of the earth.” “This is a celebration,” said Dr. Post of the meeting. “So many of you are making a difference. “It is your day to day activ-ity that sways the whole balance of your communities with your noble causes.” Dr. Post’s actual title is that of “medical bioethicist.” He is an expert on the ways

good works benefit both givers and their re-cipients. Roots of the Golden Rule (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”) are found in Leviticus 19:18: “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself.” The Golden Rule has parallels in re-ligions as diverse as those in the Far East. Confucius wrote: “If you devote your life to seeking revenge, first dig two graves.” Data from Post’s Institute for Research on Unlimited Love brings strong testimony to the power of love and charitable hearts. Living by The Golden Rule impacts ev-erything from raising children, managing chronic illness, happier retirement years and com-munity values. - Kids: One-third of 300 preteens who called ‘contributing to human-ity as important’ were de-monstrably healthier and happier 50 years later. They were interviewed every 10 years starting in the 1920’s in a study conducted called “In the Course of a Lifetime,” published in 2007. - Retirement: “More frequent volunteering is associated with delayed mortality.” – Journal of Health Psychology, 2005. - Addiction: The best way to help your self is to help someone else with a similar problem. “40 per cent of those who fulfilled the 12th step of AA (‘Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these princi-ples in all our affairs’) were sober one year out.” – Journal of Studies on Alcohol, 2004. - Immune Strength: Mother The-resa’s works shows an increase in pro-

self-awareness, self-esteem, de-pression and role functioning.” – Social Science & Medicine, 1999. - Wound Heal-ing: 42 married couples were fit-ted with devices to create tiny blis-ters on arms and allow fluid extrac-tion. High marital hostility added two days for healing. – Archives of General Psychiatry, 2005.

- Depression: Helping behaviors (vol-unteering) predicted ‘accelerated recov-ery from depressive symptoms’ in the changing lives of older couples. – Social Psychology Bulletin, 2008. - Happier Communities: “Five items contributing most to well-being and lower depression rates include ‘giving to neighbors and communities.’” – Mental Capital, 2008

“This is scientific data related to the urgings of the Nazorean (Jesus), said Dr. Post. “When you are involved with com-passionate care, it literally shuts down pathways to negative emotions.” By focusing on others, emotions shift. It is the path to overcoming anger and grief, and a formula for forgiveness. “High school students who give of themselves enjoy predictably better mental and physical health into late adulthood,” said Dr. Post. It is a thought that not only combats “affluenza,” but a moral principle that cre-ates “a common humanity.” “There is a part of the brain associated with feelings of joy that naturally elevates feelings of happiness when we merely think

of something that can be important or provocative in our life,” said Dr. Post. And those who start early in life with an attitude of helping others can find a calling, a voice. “Some call it the ‘Mother Theresa Effect,’” said Dr. Post. “It is a light that becomes a halo and follows them for the rest of their lives.” A sure cure for “afflu-enza!”

Craig Collins’s Preschool Sports program is a great way for kids to learn the fundamen-tals of sports and sportsman-ship via the leadership of a true professional.

Collins, a Westlake High grad and proven sports education leader, founded Preschool Sports through the Avon Lake United Church of Christ after a lengthy career as a director at both the West Shore and Avon Lake Ys.

His program hosts sports appropriate to the season all year around with

a focus on fitness, taking instruction, and sports-manship.

Fall sports are now in full swing, and Craig’s youth football novices had a blast at Memorial Stadi-um in Avon Lake last week-end.

Craig, who suffered a stroke last March but is rehabbing his way back into action, demonstrate-s with his example the spirit of overcoming that is criti-cal to all life endeavors and learned through sports.

Please contact him at 440-933-3896 or email [email protected] to learn about cur-rent football and soccer programs, and upcoming indoor programs.
