A TO Z OF NEWS “If you can't understand it without an explanation, you can't understand it with an explanation.” -HARUKI MURAKAMI 05 News...To The Today, in order to comment, debate or even opinionate, one needs to dig deep and know the A TO Z of news. Starting with letter A, TIMES NIE takes you on a news-ical journey, explaining every name, place and context associated with it Hurricane Dorian strikes Bahamas In the news for H urricane Dorian’s un- relenting assault on the Grand Bahamas and Abaco Islands last week caused “extreme destruc- tion” as storm surges rose 12 to 18 feet above normal tide levels and at least 30 people were confirmed dead. Dorian is the fourth named storm of the 2019 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov 30. The low-pressure system that became Dorian formed on Aug 23, strengthened to a tropical storm on Aug 25, and became a hurricane on Aug 28. In an average season, there are 12 named storms, including six hurricanes, with about half of them be- ing major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or greater. Dorian could cost the Bahamas alone at least $7 billion in insured and uninsured losses. DORIAN How they are formed Tropical cyclones are like giant en- gines that use warm, moist air as fuel. That is why they form only over warm ocean wa- ters near the equator. The warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from near the sur- face. Because this air moves up and away from the sur- face, there is less air left near the sur- face. Another way to say the same thing is that the warm air rises, causing an area of lower air pres- sure below. Air from sur- rounding areas with higher air pressure pushes in to the low pressure area. Then that “new” air be- comes warm and moist and rises, too. As the warm air continues to rise, the sur- rounding air swirls in to take its place. As the warmed, moist air rises and cools off, the wa- ter in the air forms clouds. The whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, fed by the ocean's heat and water evap- orating from the surface. Storms that form north of the equator spin coun- terclockwise. Storms south of the equator spin clock- wise. This difference is be- cause of Earth's rotation on its axis. As the storm sys- tem rotates faster and faster, an eye forms in the centre. It is very calm and clear in the eye, with very low air pressure. Higher pressure air from above flows down into the eye. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TROPICAL STORM AND A HURRICANE? Documentary on Maradona on Oct 1 In the news for: A documentary on Ar- gentine soccer star Diego Maradona will be ready for US launch by Sep- tember end. The film released in the United Kingdom; it has been directed by Academy Award-winner Asif Kapadia and will have a limited release in US theaters. It features 500 hours of never-before-seen footage of Maradona's time with Italian football club – Napoli, from 1984-1992. Why he is a hero In Argentina, however, Maradona was always more than just a sports hero — he has been a divine figure. It was the Houston Chronicle that described Maradona perfectly: he was the combination of Michael Jordan's athleticism, Babe Ruth's power and Mike Tyson's human fallibility. In a country that sur- vived many social frus- trations and several mili- tary dictatorships, El Diego became a symbol of hope and an idol to millions. The nickname, ‘El Pibe de Oro’, have an Argen- tine tradition associated with it. EARLY SIGNS OF GREATNESS Diego Maradona was born 30 October, 1960, and grew up under difficult conditions near Buenos Aires as the fourth child of Tota and Chitori Maradona. The different categories of hurricanes are also based on wind speed. Categories 1 and 2 have wind speed of 74 to 95 mph and 96 to 110 mph respectively. Categories 3 and above produce even higher wind speed and cata- strophic damage. These are major hurricanes. SCIENTIFIC TERMS The scientific term for all these storms is tropical cyclone. DHANOA What’s common between Dhanoa and Varthaman Dhanoa and Varthaman are amongst the few IAF pilots who have flown com- bat missions against Pakistan - Dhanoa during the 1999 Kargil conflict and Varthaman on February 27, the day after the IAF strike on Balakot in Pak- istan. Both pilots have experi- enced ejection by parachute from their MiG-21s. Dhanoa is the 25th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. He as- sumed the post on 31 December 2016. During his tenure as IAF chief, Dhanoa — who is regarded as a ‘flyer’s flyer’ — has flown sev- eral sorties in the MiG-21, to bolster confidence in the IAF’s oldest fighter. While it is not un- known for senior Air Marshals to fly cere- monial sorties as co-pilots in the rear seat of fighters, with the aircraft actually being flown by a younger front line pilot, Dhanoa often captains the sortie himself. Birender Singh Dhanoa was born in Deoghar, Jharkhand. He has completed a part of his schooling from St Xavier's School, Ranchi. He is an alumnus of St. George's Col- lege, Mus- soorie, where he studied from 1968 to 1969. He there on joined Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, and later graduated from National Defence Academy, Pune. Dhanoa was Commanding Officer of a front line ground attack fighter squadron during the Kargil Conflict, 1995. Under his leadership, the squadron devised innovative methods of night bombing at high altitudes that had never been attempted before. His squadron was adjudged best fighter of HQ WAC (Western Air Command). According to a study conducted by UnearthInsight, it is predicted that the market for commercial end-use of drones in India might hit the $1 billion mark by 2020. In India, drones-based solutions are being explored across industries – for commercial applications, as well as by the government to be leveraged in the defence space. In a first, a drone successfully trans- ported a single unit of blood from a remote primary health center in Uttarakhand's Tehri district to a hospital's blood bank 32 km away. The drone made the journey in 18 minutes compared to 50-60 minutes via road. India's Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has also developed its own domestic UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) program. The project aims to develop a domestic arsenal to replace the existing fleet of vehicles. For example, DRDO Lakshya is a target drone used for discreet aerial reconnaissance and tar- get acquisition.
