A Tale of Three Cities
City Number One
The Grand International Circus in the City of KarajSeyed Mehdi Hosseini Eshlaghi
During my school years they told us about a Champion who lived a thousand years ago
and was commonly referred to as “the Eagle”. And now he had returned to our city; but
this time not as a wondering champion who tears up metal trays to show off his power but
rather he has started a circus with a group of artists and dexterous foreigners and locals,
entertaining the poor souls of my city, ‘the city of 72 nationalities’. Poor souls of the city of
72 nationalities who seemingly have never been exposed to happiness and entertainment.
However for us, the school kids, whatever it was, it meant peeking from behind the horse tents
watching brawls of the clowns. Large and thick tents which seemed to enclose happiness
inside their colorful walls while on the outside from where we were standing it was all sorrow.
The Eagle flew off and years passed. I grew up to be a childless man, too afraid of having
a child who might die in this miserable place, which would certainly kill me.
Once again the eagles of my happy youth years were flying over our city. May you live
long and healthy my old Eagle. You have gone around the world and have now opened
your wings over the motherland to bring happiness to your compatriots. God only knows
how you were able to achieve this feat.
I do not believe that you will fly again over this city for another thousand years. Lucky you !
you are an eagle who can fly, but don’t be sad for us. Today, while you are gone, the only
ones left are us and the local and international circuses. One better than the other. Today
our ears are filled with the sounds of happiness.
Do not be sad because today our eyes do not need to see the thick and large and colorful tents.
Today our city is filled with colorful lights and ornaments.
Black and moss colored tents. At least they are completely made in the motherland; along
with dexterous Chinese, Uzbek and Tajik people; just like your circus: The Grand Circus
of Iran and Italy in the city of Karaj. Today we have nothing. The strongmen from this land
and from foreign lands mesmerize people. The heroes bask in victory. Victory over copper
trays and iron chains.
And rare and exotic animals from far away lands.
From our friends and brothers in Africa.

City Number Two
“The Sky Is Partly Cloudy”Majid Biglari
And thank God that I have a city. I should really be grateful.Although,
For years it’s skies have not seen the Sun and the stars
and it’s always partly cloudy.
And the nightly news continually announces:
“Tomorrow the skies will be partly cloudy. No heat. No cold. No wind, It will not rain.”
The newspapers also print large headings:
“There are no signs of the morning haze. There is no Sun and no rain either. But the sky is
partly cloudy”.
Nothing to be afraid of.
At least my city has me, it has you and it has us and The Boss - God bless him - it has
anonymous people and soldiers too - both voluntary and involuntary - it used to have
mighty Champions too. Or maybe it still does. Every once in a while they stick their heads
out from behind the walls of Centuries or the walls of imagination because they get home-
sick or maybe they want to comfort and console themselves. Or maybe they kill or get
killed or maybe they get upset and leave.
What was I saying? In short, although our city is always cloudy but at least right in the mid-
dle of the main square there is a statue who believes it can swing forever, if it wishes to.
In the old days,
the kids in my city,
when it came time to play,
would sing: “bicycle...bicycle...”
And now the Uncles with Big Mustaches keep repeating in their conscious:
“Oh Uncle...your Mustache keeps turning and turning and turning” (a childhood riddle)
You see, my city has everything, I swear to God
Only it’s skies are a bit cloudy.
