accent can account for the weakening of /1/ in 14.7% of the examples

studied. However, certain tendencies can be observed, That is, this

weakening is most prevalent after a h i g h vowel, and is more frequent

in a word-final syllable (111 examples) than in non-final position

(6 examples). As these correspond to two of the factors that have

been seen to favor palatalisation of other dental consonants

(Section 3.1), it appears that the problem here is two-fold. First,

there is no audible palatalisation even in environments which

appear to favor the palatalisation of dentals. Secondly, there is

evidence of a weakening of the lateral before yod, a phenomenon

which does not occur with other dental consonants in this position.

Influence of yod

Although no palatalisation of /1/ has been perceived in this

data, it is possible that the articulation of the lateral is

influenced by t he presence of a following ~ o d , but not sufficiently

for the modification to be audible ( c f . discussion of [ nj I, p.65 ).

Indeed, schematic representations of the articulation of [ I 1, [ j ]

and [ I j ] (see Fig. 13 a ,b ,c) based on palatograms in E.F. Haden ,

(1938, pp. 80, 84, 85) all taken from the same speaker, show that

the articulation of the sequence [ l j ] differs only slightly from

the combination of [ I ] and [ j ] , each pronounced separately.

(2) a period characterised by a weakness of articulation, as

defined by G. Straka (1964) in the history of French, which does

not appear to be paralleled in the contemporary language.

(3) lack of consistency in the traditional analyses of the

historical data, specifically in the treatment of Latin -dj- and -1j-.

In both cases, based on the tendencies observed in contemporary

pronunciation, the historical facts can be analysed in a way that

eliminates many of the problems while still accounting for the modern

forms.

The suggested evolution of Latin -1j-, in particular, eliminates

the necessity of positing an anticipatory yod to account for the

behavior of the preceding vowel. This anticipatory yod is an integral

part of the traditional analysis of postvocalic sequences of

Consonant + - yod. If the evolution of words containing -lj- can be

accounted for without recourse to this mechanism (which supposedly

produced such phonetic sequences as jlj , 33-j , jpj, jppj , jd_zj, jzj , w

jssj), then it will be worthwhile to re-examine the evolution of

all -Cj- sequences with a view to eliminating altogether the concept

of an anticipatory yod.
