A STUDY OF THE OLD GRANT CEMETERY

ALSO KNOWN AS THE TRUESDELL CEMETERY

TOWN BROOK ROAD, HOBART, NEW YORK

COMPILED BY JANE CRAIG SULLIVAN AND EDWARD S. CRAIG

OCTOBER 1, 2014

INTRODUCTION

Several years ago my brother and I became perplexed by the conflicting information found in three different lists made for the Truesdale/Truesdell Cemetery on Town Brook Road in Hobart, New York. One list was done by Don McPherson in 1931. In 1934 Grace Brush compiled a list which she took from the original Don McPherson List. In 1981 another list of the burials in this cemetery was complied through the CETA Project. We decided that we would do a comparison of the information in all three liststo the actual readings that we could obtain from the existing grave stones. Once we had completed our study of the burials in the cemetery, we decided to produce a paper with our findings which includes someobvious errors and some misinterpretations from all three lists. We thought that other researchers might benefit from our work and that led us to produce the following document. We have attempted to make this information as correct as possible considering the condition of many of the stones. We would appreciate any information that other researchers may wish to contribute. The majority of our photos were taken in July 2012 unless otherwise indicated.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to locate the burials of several of our Grant ancestors, although we believe they were most probably buried in the Truesdell aka Grant Cemetery. Their stones are either lost or were never there. When Don McPherson did his list of this cemetery he mentioned that there wereseveral unmarked field stones. It is possible that some of those field stones were for our relatives. Unfortunately McPherson did not indicate the locations of these field stones. The following is a list of our relatives which we have found in this cemetery or for which there are no stones but there are funeral records that indicate the location of the burial.

Row #1 Grave #10

[In]Memory ofRobert Grant McLaughlinWho died [date unreadable]

This stone is a smaller version of Robert and Catherine Grant’s stones. We believe this to be Robert Grant McLaughlin a son of William McLaughlin and Margaret Grant, daughter of Robert and Catharine Grant. He was baptized July 15, 1832 at the South Kortright Presbyterian Church. His date of birth wasgiven as June 20, 1830. He probably died before 1840 as he is not on the 1840 census with his parents.

McPherson List: Not listed as far as we can tell.Brush List: Not listed.CETA List: Not listed.

Row #2: This row begins about 6 or 7 feet north of the first row. There are six weathered field stones each one being about 2 feet high. Most of these stones have nothing readable on them. There is a small monument that sits on the easterly side of this row of stones. It has the names of Alexander Cumming, Helen Grant wife of Alexander and daughters Margery Cumming and Elizabeth Cumming. At the very bottom of this monument are the dates 186[3] and 1884. These dates are most likely the death dates for Margery and Elizabeth. They are on the census together through 1860. Margery must die in 1863. She is not on the 1870 census. Elizabeth is on the 1870 census but not on the 1880. Did she die before 1880 or was she missed on the 1880 and really died in 1884?

Note: The word “years” is not clear. The word “IN” is not clear. Age 56 is clear. McPherson has him as age 67 based on 1747 birth date and 1814 death date. The age of 67 on the McPherson list is incorrect as the stone clearly reads age 56. Year of death has to be 1804, not 1814, as his will was probated January 26, 1804. The year definitely looks like 1814. We have no idea why. Was this an error made by the carver or has the 1804 weathered to look like 1814? The photo below is from www.findagrave.com.

Row 5 Grave 1

A small stone with A. C. carved on it. There is no other information. The next stone is William McLaughlin. This would appear to be a foot stone. Our guess is that this footstone goes with the Alexander Cumming stone, Row 3 Grave 1. He is the son of William Cumming and Elizabeth Carson. The other Alexander Cumming, Row 2 Grave 5, was probably buried originally with one of the unreadable fieldstones in the Cumming group in Row 2. It is unlikely that a footstone of this type would have been used with a fieldstone maker.
