Variety Village has a rich history in the community and a reputation for delivering exceptional programs and services to a demographic whose needs and opportunities have changed over time. The strength of Variety Village is our commitment to the population that we serve, our flexibility to respond to changing needs and our relentless advocacy for inclusion and accessibility.

The achievements of the organization are impressive and include: an inclusionary model of excellence for fitness and sport development, an all-ability facility that is replicated across the Province, a knowledge centre for accessibility and inclusion, and a home for elite athletes.

Variety Village has a strong brand, a loyal community and offers a place of belonging for everyone. Our strategic plan is aspirational but achievable. The plan will inspire not only what we do but who we are as an organization. There is no other organization that can do what we do so our success is critical. When Variety Village achieves its plan and realizes its Mission and Vision the benefits to the community and the City will be significant.

Our operating themes are accessibility and inclusion, centre of excellence, partnership, participation, and education.

I look forward to implementing this plan and reporting back to the Board of Directors and the community on our joint success. This plan will ensure that we are working together to make a difference in the lives of the members we serve, the children we train, the teams we coach, the young adults with disabilities we support, those who we rehabilitate and the active agers we keep young.

message from THE CEO

Variety Village offers a diverse range of adaptive and inclusive programs, as well as pre-competitive and competitive sports teams, ranging from swimming to wheelchair basketball to the specially designed Children in Motion program. We are advocates for access, diversity in ability and inclusive environments, informing national policy and educating students, professionals and the wider community.

Variety Village is a great place to get fit, learn, socialize and, above all else, enjoy participation. We deliver inclusive and adaptive recreation, education and social skills programs for people of all ages and abilities, focusing on ability and not disability. We are more than a workout, we are a community, and our achievements define us.

Variety Village is a not-for-profit, charitable community, dedicated to people of all abilities. In 1981, we opened with the mandate of creating a centre where ‘every youngster would have the opportunity to be physically fit and [be given] the chance to participate in competitive sports’. Since then, athletes, instructors and coaches have focused on developing skills, strategies and attitudes that reflect a competitive spirit, now encompassing all ages and abilities.

5 year Strategic Plan

This five-year Strategic Plan – sets out the organizational direction for Variety Village and explains how we will achieve the targets set out in this plan.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT> Aquatic centre with 25m, six-lane competition pool, 10m training pool and hot pool> Fieldhouse with 200m indoor track and three-court gym> Martial arts training complex> Cardio and weight rooms with accessible equipment> Multi-purpose spaces for education, meetings and community activities

PROGRAMS> Over 100 programs tailored for our members> Classes and courses delivered for all ages - from birth to active agers> Members can participate in a fun, safe and respective environment> Trained staff delivering adaptive, inclusive classesOutreach and Education> More than 10,000 participants annually participate in activities to increase their awareness of inclusive and accessible opportunities> Creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to become actively involved in recreational and competitive sport and physical literacy> Participants partner with their able-bodied peers in inclusive physical activity programs and events> Educating participants, staff and volunteers of the importance of inclusion, accessibility, acceptance and equality

WE WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD ON OUR ROLE AS ADVOCATES FOR ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION

> Improve accessibility and inclusivity throughout our facility and programs with a goal of increasing the number of participants and improving their level of physical activity

> Investigate our operating hours to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our members and service users

> Review the programs that we deliver to ensure that they are inclusive to all members of the community and accessible to participation

> Enhance our brand to become a place of belonging for our community

> Communicate with members on a number of platforms to ensure they can receive our messages in a method of their choice

> Be fully compliant with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act by December 2016 and continue to train and educate others to meet this standard

> Be a financially-accessible facility, conducting annual price and subsidy reviews, investigating all financial support options and annually awarding over $500,000 in subsidies

> Maintain and expand the current adaptive equipment, services and program offerings for individuals with disabilities

Variety Village is committed to enhancing opportunities for all members of the community to actively participate in recreation and education without barriers. We firmly believe that our facility should be accessible and inclusive to all and we will educate others to help build a society that encourages these values. > Rigorously deliver our facility improvement plan to continue to meet the growing demands of our programs and members, providing a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting international competition and training

> Identify areas of improvement to ensure our facility and the way in which it operates maintains the standards laid down by the Canadian Government, including AODA, PCI and CASL compliance

> Enhance our brand and be synonymous with the term “all-ability”, becoming a reference point for accessibility policy

> Be financially healthy and self-sustainable, whilst being a transparent and well-governed organization

> Continue to build a skilled workforce which is robustly trained, recognized and dedicated to meet national and international standards
