The Twelve Steps of Narcotics Anonymous

1. We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The Twelve Traditions of Narcotics Anonymous

1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends on NA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority—a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants, they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or NA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry the message to the addict who still suffers.

6. An NA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the NA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, or prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every NA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Narcotics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers.

9. NA as such, ought never be organized, but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Narcotics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the NA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

WELCOMEMontgomery Area is honored to host this year’s Chesapeake and Potomac Regional Convention of Narcotics Anonymous (CPRCNA XXXI) which has brought us together to share our experience, strength, and hope in the spirit of NA unity. Enjoy the Convention and be sure to come back next year!

Clarity Statement

We are presented with a dilemma when NA members identify themselves as “addicts and alcoholics” or talk about “living clean and sober” the clarity of the NA message is blurred. To speak in this manner suggests that we have two distinct diseases, or that one drug is somehow separate from the rest and requires some kind of special recognition. Narcotics Anonymous makes no distinction between drugs. Our identification as addicts is all-inclusive and lets us concentrate on our similarities instead of our differences.

Responsibility Statement

Another facet of recovery is responsibility. There have been NA conven-tions where members acted carelessly, and the reputation of Narcotics Anonymous has suffered. Some damage can be repaired financially but not the public’s view of our fellowship. We need to remember that our personal conduct is a direct reflection of our fellowship, and our behavior may be the first and last impressions that the public has of Narcotics Anonymous. Shirts and shoes must be worn in the hallways and public areas at all times. Please keep in mind that not everyone stays up late. We need to have peace and quiet in the hallways of the hotels between 11:00 pm and 8:00 am. Please keep the noise level in the hotel rooms to a minimum. PLEASE DO NOT crowd the corridors and meeting rooms, block entrances to meetings, or gather at the top or bottom of escalators or stairs.

Our Theme

“Seeking a God of our understanding is a personal experience, but we need to know that we are not alone in our search. There is a part of this that is very private, unspeakable in a wonderful way. There are times when we must walk alone with our Higher Power. As we study the traditions, we learn that nothing which affects our personal recovery is an outside issue, and also that our unity must come first. These spiritual principles are not in conflict, but might take some thought or prayer to reconcile them. When we are living spiritually, awareness and empathy guide us in our recovery and in our sharing.” (Living Clean – The Journey Continues, page 54)

Media Statement

“Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films” (Basic Text, 6th Edition, page 75). This tradition protects the membership and reputation of Narcotics Anonymous. We do not disclose last names, nor appear in the media as members of Narcotics Anonymous. If members of the press approach you, please direct them to the Conven-tion Information Booth.

Social Media Statement

If you plan to post photographs taken at this event on social media websites, please be mindful and respectful of our Traditions and principles, particularly anonymity. Consider that you may break someone’s anonym-ity if photographs or statements posted online include the NA name or symbols. When someone is tagged in a photograph, notice of that may be sent to that person’s friends, including family, co-workers, fellow students, church members, or professional and business associates who may not know the person is in recovery.

The purpose of maintaining personal anonymity is to protect the fellow-ship as well as the members. If someone is publicly identified as an NA member, they may be seen as a representative or spokesman for NA. Our personal conduct may reflect negatively on NA’s image and reputation as a spiritual program of recovery. In addition, a still-suffering addict may be discouraged from seeking recovery in NA if he or she sees posted photo-graphs identifying members by their full names.

For more information, we suggest you consult the service pamphlet entitled “Social Media and Our Guiding Principles.”

Social Media Statement (continued)

Adjusting your privacy settings and grouping friends can help protect the fellowship and others’ anonymity and allow us to use the many benefits of social networking to enhance our recovery.

JUST FOR TODAY

JUST FOR TODAY my thoughts will be on my recovery, living and enjoy-ing life without the use of drugs.

JUST FOR TODAY I will have faith in someone in NA who believes in me and wants to help me in my recovery.

JUST FOR TODAY I will have a program. I will try to follow it to the best of my ability.

JUST FOR TODAY, through NA, I will try to get a better perspective on my life.

JUST FOR TODAY I will be unafraid, my thoughts will be on my new associations, people who are not using and who have found a new way of life. So long as I follow that way, I have nothing to fear.

THIRD STEP PRAYER

Many of us have said, “Take my will and my life. Guide me in my recovery. Show me how to live.” (Basic Text, 6th Edition, page 26)

THANK YOU

CPRCNA XXXI would like to thank you, the addict, for helping our Con-vention to become an acceptable, responsible, and productive function in society. It is because of you that we are invited back to this facility each year, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of Narcotics Anonymous for his or her cooperation and participation.
