FROM THE CEOIn 2018 our agency celebrated its 175th anniversary. We’ve come a long way since 1843, and yet – for every service we add and family we meet – the new steps we take are always guided by the values instilled in us by our founders. The team at Maryhurst exists today to be what it has been for 175 years: passionate advocates and mentors for children and families who are hurting.

I’ve been moved by the stories of transformative success I’ve seen this year. One child came to us with burns covering half of her body; she arrived at Maryhurst struggling with verbal and physical aggression. Now, that same girl is an active participant in yoga exercise therapy, extracurricular studies, and creative expression courses on campus. A family who could not have children of their own have fostered through

Maryhurst and are set to adopt a sibling pair who previously had no loving or stable home for their entire childhoods. Maryhurst Academy, the JCPS school on site at our campus, graduated more students in 2018 than in any year since 2009.

2018 has also been a year of collaboration. Our outpatient family counseling program, Renewal, has continued to see growth through the partnerships we’ve formed with JCPS schools, Home of the Innocents, and other organizations. Our outreach to families in Louisville’s neighborhoods has never been larger, and we look forward to bringing wellbeing resources to even more families in 2019.

As always, this work would not be possible without our many volunteers, supporters, and benefactors, each of whom are named in this report. Thank you for collaborating with us to make our 175th year a special celebration. We hope you’ll continue to partner with us as we continue our journey of hope into next year.

All youth who completed Maryhurst’s program were able to step-down into a less restrictive setting. 65% went home or to foster care. The remainder went to community-based settings that are focused on indepdence.

Children in our residential program attend an onsite JCPS school, Maryhurst Academy. Our data shows that 82 percent of Maryhurst Academy students tested at grade level or made progress in the areas of either reading or math during their enrollment.

The children who are discharged from a Maryhurst program do so having fullfilled 88 percent achieved treatment goals as defined by clinical supervisors, state workers, and other specialists. This number grows to 89% for planned discharges.
