Thank-you

It’s funny in this day and age to think of Sonny and Cher every time I think of the work that has been done this past year.

“The Beat Goes On” was very popular when I was growing up. This year it was the theme for our December event—A Star Affaire…The Beat Goes On. What a wonder-ful theme for our Cardiac Program and the joining of our community around our new Cardiac Catheterization Lab. I get goose bumps every time I remember standing in the Cath Lab watching one of our skilled cardiologists performing a lifesaving procedure here at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center right before my eyes. Now, with the gen-erosity of so many, we have two functioning Cath Labs for our patients who deserve the best heart care close to home.

Along with our Cardiac Cath Lab, the Foundation was able to transfer approxi-mately $1.5 million to St. John to benefit a number of its programs. The Foundation Board is proud of the work it does and feels blessed to be a part of an exciting time in the history of St. John. On behalf of all of the Board members, our staff, and our patients—“The beat goes on, the beat goes on. Hearts keep pounding a rhythm to the brain. La-de-da-de-da.” Thank you!

cathy Barr, cFre

St. John Foundation

executive Director

The work of the Foundation has had a tremendous impact on PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center over the past few years, raising $3.4 million for the hospital renovation and nearly $1 million for our Cardiac Catheterization Lab. We are thankful for all of the support we have received from the communities that we serve.

This is an exciting year as we change our focus from a single project to a menu of opportunities that will benefit the entire medical center. We will focus on what is important to you, the donor—the patient. Where do you think your dollar will make the most difference? The opportunities are endless. Your medical center needs your help now more than ever. Our partnership has no boundaries, and your help will con-tinue to allow us to provide compassionate care to all of our patients and families.

Staff education, heart, nutrition, dialysis, and cancer care, just to name a few, are all vital services that we provide. They can be made better with your help. Thank you for your past and future support. Our community is only as strong as you make it, and for that we are truly grateful.

From left, Dr. richard

Nau and rob Quoidbach

created a special caregiver

education endowment.

Take a tree farmer and a retired physician, and put them together—and what do you get? An endowment! Rob Quoidbach and Dr. Richard Nau both have a passion for education. Specifically, education for St. John Medical Center caregivers.

Quoidbach’s original gift, about 10 years ago, created an endowment to assist St. John in maintaining its facilities. But last year Quoidbach sat down and talked to the Foundation’s Executive Director, Cathy Barr, and said that he wanted to change his focus. “There are so many people that need help with education costs to make their lives better and that’s where I want my endow-ment to go,” says Quoidbach. “I want to pay it forward and encourage others to do the same.” So after several conversations, the St. John Medical Center Staff Education Endowment Fund was born.

Quoidbach was very specific that this fund is to be used for assisting caregivers interested in obtaining continuing education to include degrees, certification,or assistance in attending LCC or other educational facilities.

Three months later, Dr. Nau sat down with Barr to talk about the same desire—to assist caregivers who just need an extra boost to help them reach their potential. While working as a pathologist at St. John, he came into contact with some wonderful people. “I saw single moms trying to raise their kids while working full time and they just couldn’t seem to get ahead,” he says. “I met others who wanted to get their degree or take some college courses, but they couldn’t afford it.”

The two were introduced, and with the generosity of these two men, the fund is in full swing and will be awarded to caregivers who need a hand up. If you would like to make a contribution to this program so that others can benefit from continuing education, give Cathy Barr a call at the Foundation office, (360) 414-7900.

TWO HONOrED WITH rECEIvING THE TOM MANNING AWArD

www.peacehealth.org/lowercolumbia/foundation 3 St. John Medical Center Foundation

We teed up for the first St. John Foundation Golf Tournament in 2002. As the first Tournament Chairman, Board member Tom Renaud set the wheels in motion for a successful fundraising concept.

In 2005, Mark Purcell became the chairman; the success continued and through the next two tournaments nearly $250,000 was raised. The event had grown so much that in 2007 Chris Searing was recruited to co-chair the Tourna-ments. Together, Chris and Mark have raised dollars for our Birth Center, our Critical Care unit, and, most recently, our Cardiac Catheter-ization Lab. Working together to build our Golf Tournament, Chris and Mark have been respon-sible for impacting our community’s health by presenting St. John Medical Center more than $750,000 raised as a result of these golf tournaments!

Because of their exceptional leadership as Board members of St. John Foundation, we have honored Mark and Chris with the Tom Manning Award. The St. John Medical Center Foundation’s Tom Manning Award was created in the spring of 1987. Tom Man-ning’s dedication and commitment to the hospital and to the community exemplified excellence in volunteer leadership. Now, each year a Foundation Board member is honored in Tom's name. Mark and Chris received this honor because the level of healthcare for our community has been transformed by their generosity and determination. They have earned the respect of their peers and the admi-ration from a community that is healthier by their kindness and compassion. Congratula-tions, and thank you Mark and Chris!

supportive care

Patient-focused supportive care

“Supportive care is

about the caring catching

up with the technology.”

—Amanda, family member

ann Wright shares with Kris

Keough, coordinator of St.

John Supportive care Team,

how important supportive

care is to the families of

patients with life-limiting

illnesses. The Palliative care

Program, named in honor

of Dr. David c. Wright, at

St. John Medical center is

available to all of our patients.

In January, St. John Medical Center’s new inpatient palliative care team began offer-ing care for inpatients diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

Palliative care (also known as sup-portive care) is a medical specialty where a multidisciplinary team with expertise in palliative care, along with the patient’s primary care physician (PCP), follows the patient with a life-limiting illness from time of diagnosis through death and bereavement. This team provides the 4 C’s of palliative care:

• Compassion—treating the whole person, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

• Communication—helping patients and their families understand the medical situations and choices.

• Coordination of Care—arranging seamless care among providers, family members, and care facilities.

• Choices—focusing on the patient’s life goals and assisting with advance care planning. The program is named after Dr.

David C. Wright, a Longview native, who died from metastatic esophageal cancer in June 2009. Dr. Wright was trained as a neuroradiologist, and as a physician member of the patient care team; he was involved in the care of patients with a life-limiting illness. As a patient, Dr. Wright and his wife, Ann, were aware of the difference palliative care made in the quality of his life during his final illness. After his death, Dr. Neville, Medical Director of the program, approached his widow asking

her and his children if they could honor Dr. Wright by naming the program after him. Not only did they agree, but Ann joined the pal-liative care team as a community representative.

In addition to philanthropic support from Dr. Wright’s colleagues, friends and family for this program, the pal-liative care team at St. John received a $17,500 grant from the regence Foun-dation for continued development of the program. If you would like to be part of helping this program grow at St. John, please contact the St. John Medical Center Foundation. Together we can provide training, education, and care to improve the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illness and their families.

A humble, quiet man sat next to his Guard-ian Angel in the new Ocean Beach Clinic on a sunny day in August. “I don’t like public speaking, and even coming here to talk about this is way out of my comfort zone,” says Dale Burleson. “But, Kathy is a very spe-cial person and I want everyone to know it.”

Earlier this year, Dale honored Kathy Davis, Certified Medical Assistant, through a contribution to our Guardian Angel program. Kathy, who has worked as a Certified Medical Assistant for almost 40 years, started working for Dr. Stan Norquist when it was the Columbia valley Medical Group. She now works with Dr. James Crider of PeaceHealth Medical Group.

Dale decided to honor Kathy because of the support she gave him after the death of his wife, Nancy. Dale sees Kathy every six months for his own healthcare and says

I feel so blessed to have you on my healthcare team.

You and your staff make going to the doctor a pleasure.

Thank you!

Thanks so much for always being available. It means so much to me.

We are grateful to have you.

What a wonderful difference you made in my life!

that Kathy was there, giving him moral sup-port every step of the way. “She is not only medically competent, but she’s very much a people person.”

Kathy says the gift in her honor “surprised and overwhelmed me. I don’t do anything special. Part of who I am and what I do is taking care of our patient’s needs. It’s our family here at the clinic, taking care of your family. It’s a team approach.” When Dr. Crider was asked about Kathy, his answer was quick: “I wouldn’t know what to do without her.”

Dale’s gift to dialysis in memory of his mother and in honor of Kathy, is an exam-ple of the relationships that are formed between St. John’s caregivers and their patients. It is an honor and a privilege to

provide this care to our community.

She is one of the most car-ing physicians I have ever

met. She listens, and she includes me in all of my

healthcare plans.

A physician and friend—a hard act to follow.

weekend.

At the end of a long week and in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a busy cardiac catheterization lab, Arun Kuchela, MD, stops for a minute to talk about why he came to Longview, why he chose this specialty, and what it was like to be a part of history at St. John.

Dr. Kuchela, an interventional cardiologist for almost six years, came to St. John because he said he “wanted the opportunity to help build and create a program here.” The other hospitals where he worked had been doing these procedures for years, and this presented him with a new challenge. He is suited for this specialty because he enjoys the patient interaction. “I always wanted to be a surgeon, and interventional cardiology is one of the most surgical medical specialties. I get to do the consultation as well as the acute care, and I really don’t mind being called in the middle of the night to take care of the patients.”

On June 14, George Briggs entered the Cath Lab for what Dr. Kuchela described as an uncomplicated 40-minute procedure. Two stents were placed in Briggs’ arteries, and afterward he wanted to know: “Where’s the party? Who has the cake?” A car enthusiast, Briggs is grateful that he now has enough energy to do what he loves most. “Before the stents, I couldn’t breathe. After speaking just three words I would gasp for air, had no energy and had a hard time just staying awake,” he says. He described being half awake during the procedure and saw the balloon inflate and the stent put into place. He was surprised that instantaneously the blood started flowing freely to his heart, where before there was 70 percent blockage in his artery. Now he and his new bride travel to car shows every weekend. “I was dying,” he says, and then continues with a huge grin, “but I’m alive now thanks to Dr. Santo-Domingo and Dr. Kuchela.”

A sea of pink greeted a dozen breast cancer survivors as they entered the Mark Morris High School gymnasium last fall.

Basketball players from Mark Morris and Woodland high schools and their fans dressed in pink to honor the survivors. Arleen Hubble and ruth Melvin, Director of Lower Colum-bia Breast Center, were thrilled by the enthu-siasm of the students. To make a difference for the women of their community, the students raised more than $1,000 for our local breast cancer program.

For a hands-on experience, three Kalama High School girls volunteered at the annual Breast Cancer Survivors Luncheon where they were struck by key-note speaker Heidi Marble. Marble talked about how cold she was during her radiation treatments; she even brought her own robe for comfort. The Kalama students decided to use their annual “Mr. Kalama” fundraiser to help cancer patients in their own community. In one week of Mr. Kalama pageant activities, the students raised $3,000 and purchased 100 soft, comfortable robes for patients receiving radiation treatment at their local hospital—PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center.

All these students are shining examples of the next generation of fundraising professionals and philanthropists. They understand the need for local dollars and have worked hard to realize their dreams of making a difference for local people they don’t even know. When the students met Bernice LePage at the radiation treatment center, she was touched by their projects and said, “It’s like a chain of inspiration. I marvel at these kids. It shows how interested they are in what happens to people.”
