A SPECIAL CELEBRATION AT THIS YEAR’S PARISH MEETING!

In two weeks, on December 10, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip will hold our annual parish meeting. I look forward to that day for two special reasons! Of course, I always enjoy welcoming a new class of chapter members, and I enjoy seeing all sorts of parishioners in one place. Usually I see parishioners at one of the many services – 7:45, 8:45, 9:00, 11:15, 4:00, 5:00. On most Sundays, different parishioners show up at different times; that is fine!

However, on Sunday, December 10, we ask all parishioners to be in the Parish Hall at 10:00 for one grand meeting: our official and legally necessary annual parish meeting. The business part of the meeting is not long. We elect six new chapter members (see their biographies elsewhere – and pray for them!), we hear a brief treasurer’s report, we hear a wardens’ report, and I deliver a report. And, there is usually some special report.

This year, the special report will indeed be special! We are planning to honor the wonderful and irreplaceable Judy Johnson! Judy has been the Executive Assistant to the Dean for fourteen years! Before that, she served four years here in the areas of liturgy and membership. Eighteen wonderful years! Some of you have heard by now that Judy, who has surely been one of my closest colleagues here, is retiring. I tried for a while to avoid that reality! She would be too hard to replace! But the time has come for her, and her dear husband, Bill, to move to Peoria, Illinois, her home state, and enjoy a more restful life than the one she has served here at the Cathedral!

I will miss Judy and Bill, as will so many of you. They have been exemplary parishioners, neighbors, ushers, acolytes, thurifers, chalice bearers, vergers, altar guild persons, lector/intercessors, daily office leaders, and Godly Play story tellers! Wow, what a list! At one time, Bill was the driver of our bus bringing people from Lenbrook, Canterbury Court, and other places. Together, Judy and Bill used to serve Wednesday night dinners at Holy Comforter; they served at Peachtree Pine, and they served at the earliest “Eucharist without walls” in downtown Atlanta parking lots. Bill served at many an Antiques Show event and Book Store event.

Judy, of course, has been the beautiful and steady voice and presence in my office. As some of you know, she was the one making sure I got to emails and telephone calls and requests and letters and calendars and pretty much everything! Thank you, Judy!

So, on Sunday, December 10, I want to celebrate the ministry and service of Judy Johnson at our annual parish meeting. I will not ask her to be the recording secretary! Do join us. We have a fine chapter class to elect, and we have fine parishioners to greet during this Advent season.

Sunday ADULT EDUCATION

LIVING FAITH

Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another.

This week, Canon Cathy Zappa will lead our continuing discussion of Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit.

SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY

Room 122Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. This year, we are reading the book of Genesis. For more information, please contact Jim Bingham at 404-373-3273 or [email protected].

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL

Child HallThis Sunday, we will spend our time together talking about the Christmas Pageant and the wonderful Biblical characters who bring it to life. You may be surprised to learn where some of those characters live in scripture, and the roles they play in their native infancy narratives. We look forward to seeing you there.

BIBLICAL GREEK

Room 356Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis most Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m., including this Sunday, for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries. For more information, contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith at [email protected].

Unless otherwise noted, these adult Sunday School classes meet from 10:10–11 a.m.

WORSHIP

This Sunday afternoon, December 3, at 4 p.m., the Cathedral will offer its annual Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols, sung by the Cathedral Choir. Those who have attended this candlelight service in past years know what a perfect opportunity it is to step back from the hectic pace of the post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas season, and take a few moments to contemplate its real meaning.

The singing of carols within the context of Anglican and Episcopal liturgies is a relatively recent phenomenon. Across the pond, it was only in the 1870s that carols began to be sung in London parish churches, and in 1880 Truro became the first English cathedral to hold a carol service. Our two services of lesson and carols (for Advent on December 3, and for Christmas on December 17) are adapted from the famous carol service

at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. For our Advent service we include the ancient O Antiphons, one after each of the seven lessons. These Christian texts invoke the Messiah to return and have been sung through the ages at Vespers on the seven evenings leading up to Christmas, and each is sung to equally ancient and beautiful plainchant. Whether you best sense the eternal through timeless chant, or wonderful choral music, or popular carols sung by all, there is something for everyone in this service. Why not practice a “random act of kindness” and make the service a gift to someone this year by inviting them to attend? It may turn out to be one of the best gifts you give.

2018 STEWARDSHIP Campaign

TOY DRIVE 2017

Fellow Members of the Household,We start with thanks. Thanks for being a member of this community and thanks for choosing to financially support our sacred home. Your presence makes this place more perfect and we are grateful.

We want to extend a personal invitation to participate in the 2018 Stewardship Campaign. We want to Welcome Home all parishioners, guests, and strangers. Home is a great metaphor for all that we do at the church.

As we all know, a good home has a strong foundation. A church is no different. At the Cathedral, our foundation is built on Worship, Education, Mission, and Community. These marks of the church reflect the mission and programming that we are engaged in on a daily basis. Of course, at the center is Community—church is not a building, activities, or beliefs. Church is our people. Everything we do builds this beloved community.

Can you join us in making a financial pledge to our Cathedral home? In our Cathedral home, we baptize parishioners. In our Cathedral home, we tend to others. In our Cathedral home, we can disagree and reconcile. In our Cathedral, we welcome those who return.

Yours in Christ,Sara & Donnie ChapmanMichelle & Austin Hall2018 Stewardship Co-chairs

SPIRITUALITY

PREPARING THE HEART IN ADVENT

Come spend time preparing your heart for the birth of Wisdom at an Advent Quiet Day, Saturday, December 9. The heart is a doorway that can be prepared to welcome the Christ, born in the poorest corner, in the most unlikely place. This day will include opportunities for wisdom practices that prepare and open the heart for transformation: chant, extended silence for individual reflection with readings, the labyrinth, creative expression, and body prayer.

The Quiet Day will be led by Lisa Persons, M.Div., who is a spiritual director and coordinator at Amerson House Spirituality Center behind St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. She studied intensively with the Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault for several years and has been an active associate of Green Bough House of Prayer since 1996. She has organized monthly Taizé prayers in the Atlanta area since 1992.

The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, December 9. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Please register before December 4 online at stphilipscathedral.org/quietday or by contacting Jeannie Mahood, [email protected] or 404-365-1031.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT SIGN-UPS

It is time to sign up for the Christmas Pageant, held every year at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. All children registered in Sunday School, from the 4-year-olds through fifth grade, are welcome to participate. If your child is not registered for Sunday School, please contact Lisa McNamara, [email protected], or register online at stphilipscathedral.org/children. A pageant sign-up table will be in the Atrium on Sunday, December 3. All casting will be complete by December 10. Dress rehearsal will be Sunday, December 17 at 12:45 p.m. If you have any questions, contact Sara Chapman, [email protected]. The Christmas Pageant is a tradition not to be missed!
