heridan Conley was excited to meet her baby boy on June 5, 2008, the day he was delivered at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH). But when River was born, he cried out once, then turned blue. Doctors told Sheridan and her husband, Jaime, that River suffered from Persistent Pulmonary

Hypertension of Newborns, a disorder where the lungs do not adapt to breathing outside of the womb. River was whisked to the SVBGH neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU), where he spent a month fighting for his life. During this month, the doctors feared River would need to be moved to a hospital in Richmond or North Carolina to receive specialized treatment for his heart. But thanks to the dedicated care of the doctors and nurses in the NICU, that transfer

was not required, and the family was able to avoid the risk of transporting their fragile newborn. River fully recovered and is now a healthy 1-year-old who loves his older brother Griffin and big sister McRaye. But McRaye felt that she could do more. She wanted to make sure all babies at SVBGH would continue to receive excellent care as did her brother. In April 2009, McRaye asked guests at her 10th birthday party to make contributions to SVBGH instead of buying her gifts. She raised over $500 to use toward purchasing special equipment for the NICU at the hospital. McRaye is no stranger to philanthropy: this is the third year she has asked guests for charitable contributions in lieu of birthday gifts. McRaye can’t wait to show off her brother to the NICU staff, and the staff can’t wait to show off the result of McRaye’s generous spirit!

evin Price, a Petty Officer First Class from Washington state, was enjoying his annual Outer Banks vacation with his family. One evening, Kevin felt ill, but attributed it to too much sun. Within minutes, however, he was experiencing excruciating

pain in his left arm. Kevin was having a heart attack at the age of 36. As his wife drove him to the Outer Banks Hospital, they contacted the sheriff, who called an ambulance to meet them. The eMTs quickly made the decision to request the Sentara Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance to transport Kevin to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he would undergo emergency catheterization. The Nightingale crew landed in Duck, immediately began treating Kevin en route and reached the hospital in only 16 minutes. In less than three hours, Kevin was in the cath lab at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital undergoing a lifesaving procedure. Kevin’s story depicts the importance of an advanced air ambulance service, in a way he understands only too well – Kevin’s own father died at age 36 from a heart attack. Kevin says, “I was happy to see the Nightingale crew before I left the hospital so that I could thank them. The staff at Sentara is awesome.” This was one family legacy that Kevin’s family is happy to be without!

iving was a large part of Mr. Arnold McKinnon’s life. He contributed great knowledge to Norfolk Southern Corporation

as its chairman, gave his time by volunteering on local non-profit boards, and made financial gifts to many non-profit organizations, including Sentara. Hampton Roads will certainly miss this Norfolk resident’s generous spirit—on May 18, 2009, Mr. McKinnon died of heart failure at the age of 81. The McKinnon’s interest in Sentara began with Mr. McKinnon as a patient in the Sentara Heart program; Arnold had his first heart bypass in 1987 and second in 1996. His wife, Oriana, says, “We were so completely happy with the care Arnold received from Sentara.” The McKinnons believed in the value of Sentara as a premier healthcare

provider to the community. To express their sentiments, they made a gift of $50,000 to Sentara which was used to support the purchase of a sculpture for the Sentara Heart Hospital titled “Life Dance.” The gift of art was especially appropriate for the McKinnons, since both art-lovers, served on the board of the Chrysler Museum. Mrs. McKinnon states, “Sentara offers the highest quality care and places an emphasis on excellence in the cardiac division.” Thanks to the generosity of the McKinnons, other heart patients can see “Life Dance” as they enter the Sentara Heart Hospital and feel a sense of inspir-ation and joy in life and health.

n On April 8, 2009, Tawanda Drone and her husband, Herman, received the shock of their lives. A doctor at Sentara Port Warwick emergency department told them that Herman’s heart was only functioning at 10

percent capacity. At age 40, he was experiencing congestive heart failure and cardiomegaly as a result of a virus, and would need to be out of work for several months if he hoped to recover. Tawanda, a financial counselor for Sentara Central Billing Group, had to figure out how to overcome the financial gap left by Herman’s disability and provide for them and their 4-year-old daughter, Amiyah. In May, Tawanda decided to apply to Sentara employee H.O.P.e. Fund for assistance. She was thrilled to see how quickly the H.O.P.e. Fund responded to her need. She says, “I wasn’t expecting that. It was such a burden lifted.” Thankfully, Herman began healing with the right medications and care. In July, Herman was healthy enough to return to work. His heart is at 50 percent capacity and continues to heal. Tawanda is so grateful for the assistance her family received from the H.O.P.e. Fund and plans to increase her donation amount. She says, “I want to help someone else.” Tawanda wants everyone to know that, thanks to the H.O.P.e. Fund, her family made it through this unexpected hardship: “It’s a blessing.”

n February 4, 2009, Rhonda Townsend was in her car, stopped at a red light, when she was rear-ended by

another vehicle traveling at 45 miles per hour. Her car was totaled, and Rhonda suffered severe injuries to her neck that required surgery. Unfortunately, Rhonda had exhausted all of the paid leave at her nursing job at Sentara Heart Hospital, and disability payments would not begin until 43 days after the surgery. As a single mom to two children, the six-week gap without income weighed heavily on her, and she knew that she would not be able to manage all of her expenses on her own. Rhonda applied to the H.O.P.e. Fund for assistance and was relieved to receive the money for one month’s rent plus $100 for groceries. Rhonda has worked as a

nurse for Sentara for the past seven years, and says, “Sentara has been very good to me.” She herself is a donor to the H.O.P.e. Fund and now understands its value firsthand. “I have no family here, and I didn’t know what I was going to do,” Rhonda says. “The money from the H.O.P.e. Fund got me over the hump until disability kicked in. Thank you to everyone who is a part of the H.O.P.e. Fund – You were there when I needed you most.”

arolyn Whitaker has worked hard over the past 13 years to move up from kitchen assistant to cook supervisor at Sentara Life Care in Portsmouth. In those years, she has faced many challenges, but

she credits the H.O.P.e. Fund with helping her through the greatest challenge of them all. Carolyn’s financial difficulties began when her mother suddenly died after a heart attack in January 2007. Carolyn needed to pay funeral and other unexpected expenses, which set her behind on her mortgage payments. A year and a half later, Carolyn suffered a back injury that forced her out of work for nearly three months and deepened her financial woes. As Carolyn struggled to meet her increasing obligations to creditors, she soon was in danger of losing her home. In February 2009, she sought advice from her supervisor, who suggested that Carolyn apply to the H.O.P.e. Fund for assistance. To her amazement, the H.O.P.e. Fund paid her mortgage and power bill for February. Because of this critical assistance from the H.O.P.e. Fund, Carolyn could save her home. Carolyn is deeply thankful for the assistance she received from Sentara, and she wants other employees to understand how important their donations are to the H.O.P.e. Fund. “A lot of people don’t know much about the H.O.P.e. Fund,” says Carolyn. “Most employees don’t really know until you’re in that situation. We need to spread the word and keep people donating. Had it not been for the H.O.P.e. Fund, I would have lost my house. The H.O.P.e. Fund gave me hope.”

ust this past May, the Sentara Health Foundation hosted its second annual Members’ Celebration of the Sentara Legacy Society for Healthcare excellence. Held at the Virginia Oncology Associates’ Lake Wright location, the members

and guests came together to celebrate the powerful impact of their philanthropy in the Hampton Roads community. The Sentara Legacy Society is a giving circle dedicated to supporting new programs and innovations that benefit our community’s health. Legacy Society contributions support programs and projects not included in the Sentara operational budget, but that represent compelling opportunities for incorporating new, high-impact technologies, processes and services within Sentara. This year the attendees celebrated the 2008 Legacy Society program winner, “Journey Beyond the Diagnosis.” “Journey Beyond the Diagnosis: The Path to Survivorship” is a cancer survivors series that addresses many concerns that patients experience after cancer diagnosis and treatment, including financial stress, nutrition and intimacy. The presentation was led by Dr. Michael Lee, an oncologist and fellow cancer survivor, and

by Dr. Louise Lubin, a clinical psychologist who leads many of the workshops. Charlene Cattoi, a participant and cancer survivor, ended the evening with sincere thanks to the members of the Legacy Society, who made this program possible. Charlene said, “My heart was broken, and you have helped me heal.” This program typifies the margin of excellence that the Legacy Society fund supports. Sentara Patient Assistance Fund Comes to the Rescue

t could happen to anyone. As a volunteer firefighter, Chester “Chet” Bailey thought that by helping his neighbor burn trash on Hatteras Island, N.C., he would be able to prevent a disaster. Yet, in a moment, an explosion created a flash fire that resulted

in second- and third-degree burns covering half of Chet’s body, primarily on his face, neck, chest, arms and knees. Chet’s firefighter buddies responded to the 911 call. He was airlifted by Sentara Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Burn Trauma Center. “When I woke up, I didn’t know where I was,” Chet says. “I thought I was going to die.” Skin grafts were needed for his knee, and special dressings for severe burns were applied to his arms and fingers. Unfortunately, Chet’s insurance didn’t cover all of the expenses related to these supplies. Once again, firefighters came to his rescue. The Red Knights Motorcycle Club is an organization for firefighters which raises money for the Sentara Patient Assistance Fund. The Patient Assistance Fund is for people just like Chet, whose insurance doesn’t cover all the costs of critical medical needs. Because of the Patient Assistance Fund, Chet was able to go home wearing special healing garments that drastically reduced his burn disfigurement, as well as soaps, ointments and dressings to aid in the healing process. Chet’s story shows just how much donations to the Sentara Patient Assistance Fund can mean to a patient. Today, other than
