HOBART WOMEN’S
HISTORY WALK The Hobart City Council (CoH) has re
-released a map – Hobart Women’s
History Walk - which was created almost 25 years ago. The Map will let
you wander around the City to 33
sites, with stories about important
women from Hobart’s past, such as Amy Sherwin and Truganini. Copies
are available from the front desk at the
Town Hall.
PETER DEGRAVES - II In 1826, Degraves was imprisoned for
his English debts. A new English
Insolvency Act had been received which the Tasmanian Attorney-
General thought absolved Degraves
but Chief Justice Pedder ruled
otherwise. He remained in prison until 1831 when Lt. Governor Arthur
had him released. During his
detention, he submitted a plan for
improving the Gaol! From about 1822, a piped water supply to the
military barracks, the port and some
houses had been taken from the mill

A SOUTH HOBART NEWSLETTER not kind to the building. From the
lofty claims made in 1823, the
building became so dilapidated that it earned the name of the Rat's
Castle. In 1879 the Rat's Castle was
demolished and the site sold to
Scottish schoolmaster, Alexander Ireland, and, by 1880, the current
Roxburgh House was built, with
Scotch College conjoined to the
rear. A Mercury article from 1886 provides an insight into the tutelage
being provided. At the annual fête &
end-of-year award ceremony,
Ireland noted that great attention was paid to English composition
and “any boy leaving the School
was able to express his thoughts on
any subject with which he was tolerably familiar in concise and
grammatical English." It was also
noted that the boys were “building
up their characters" and that “every path was now open to all". The
College continued at the site until
1900 when it moved premises. In
1913 it amalgamated with the Hutchins School. The Scotch
College building has been obscured
from the community since the
construction of a 1956 building fronting Brisbane Street, which also
linked into the school building. The
1956 building's original function was as the Total and Permanently
Incapacitated Hostel for returned
soldiers, with its later use as a
commercial retail outlet. Successive alterations to the College, over
many years, further hid the
architectural detailing, history and
use of the building. The removal of the 1956 building along with the
conservation and reconstructive
works to the former Scotch College
wing have provided significant
heritage benefits, as has the creation
of a laneway and courtyard which
will separate the new apartment
complex from the historic buildings.
A SOUTH HOBART NEWSLETTER pond of the Sorell Water Mill, located on the Rivulet bank just below All
Saints’ Church - the first piped water
supply in Australia. In 1831, the
Government extended the water scheme by constructing an intake at a
new dam located some 200 metres
above Degraves’ dam, thus avoiding
pollution of the Rivulet by tanneries upstream of the Sorell Mill and
Degraves’ sawmill. The diversion of
the Hobart Rivulet’s flow restricted
Degraves’ activities, although he could still rely on the flow in Guy
Fawkes Rivulet. However, in 1831,
he built the Cascade Brewery on his
property followed soon after by a flour mill. Degraves and/or his
partner owned the land and the water
rights up to the top of the Mountain
and, in 1834, they built a new dam on the property about 1.5 kms upstream
of the Cascades, just above Strickland
Avenue, and ran the flow through an
open channel to a high reservoir formed by a clay embankment on the
hillside above his Brewery and mills.
From there, a pipe carried the water to
an hydraulic turbine 3 metres below which drove the saw mill. The
turbine was an early type of Pelton
Wheel (as used in hydroelectric
power stations to this day) with buckets mounted on the side of a cast
iron wheel and has been described in
the diary of the engineer who built the
Melbourne to Geelong railway! (On a visit to Hobart, he called in on the
operator and sketched the turbine.)
The discharge from the sawmill was
divided, with half going to the government scheme and the rest
going to Degraves’ other mills. (tbc)
THE RAT’S CASTLE A development on the corner of
Brisbane & Elizabeth Streets - The
Rox - has uncovered an important
part of Hobart’s past. The original Roxborough House (cnr. Brisbane &
Elizabeth Streets) was built as a
residence around 1822. It was
described in an 1823 auction notice as a “large commodious three-storey
stone building" that “when
finished”… “will be one of the
delightful Residences in or near Hobart town." Multiple transfers of
ownership and changes of use were
