“The responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society”.

To fully meet their corporate social responsibility, enterprises should have in place a process to integrate social, environmental, ethical, human rights and consumer concerns into their business operations and core strategy, in close collaboration with their stakeholders, with the aim of:

– maximising the creation of shared value for their owners/shareholders and for their other stakeholders and society at large;

– identifying, preventing and mitigating their possible adverse impacts.

CSR Definition

Methodology

Population: 51 “public-interest” companies (listed companies, banks and insurance companies) of strategic importance for the Romanian economy.

Method: exploratory content analysis

Units: corporate websites (all pages, including downloadable annual or CSR reports)

Research Questions:

a) Do Romanian companies already disclose non-financial information required by the Directive?

b) What formats are used for CSR disclosure?

c) How each company performs comparing to others

Scoring companies’ disclosure quality on each of the 18 CSR objectives“1” => Disclosure of the importance of each specific CSR objective

“2” => Disclosure of specific policies and actions

“3” => Disclosure of the progress (outcomes)



Results 1.1: what CSR issues are disclosed by Romanian Companies?

• Discrepancy between commitments and progress => lack of proper CSR management systems

• Cvasi-ignored issues =>divergence with the public agenda: “Fight against corruption and bribery”“Fight against discrimination ”“Social dialogue”“Human rights mitigation in the supply chain”“Local operations’ impact mitigation”“Diversity”“Equal remuneration between women and men”“Re-newable energy use”

• Moderately approached issues => legacy of previous European law’s provisions: “Raw materials, energy or water reduction” “Pollution mitigation”“Waste management”“Ocupational health and safety “
