LANTERN THEATER COMPANY: IN CONVERSATION

FROM THE DIRECTORS

Leenane (population…around 20?) is a little village in Connemara, County Galway, on Ireland’s ragged western coast. Unsheltered from the Atlantic’s buffeting winds, Leenane squats in the mud where a coastal road meets the N59 highway. It’s a routine spot for Connemara travelers to pass through, usually on the way to someplace else.

Martin McDonagh’s Leenane is populated with gossips and troublemakers, outcasts and deviants. They pepper their conversations with curses and insults, besmirch their neighbors’ names, and trade blows mere moments after shaking hands. Not even the local priest is above reproach - the town’s moral state having driven him to drink.

So how are we, the audience, to spend an evening here? McDonagh challenges us to be sympathetic, to let his humor help us to look past petty little things like murder. That moment-to-moment struggle to accept and forgive is intrinsic to life in Leenane, and McDonagh invites us to take part in it.

“The Ireland I know is more the West,” McDonagh said in 2002, well before Ireland’s recent economic collapse. “I’ve never been madly keen on Dublin, and whatever you think about the whole Celtic Tiger thing, my natural instinct would be to see the underside of all that - the people who fall through the cracks. None of my plays are especially accurate pictures of the other side either - they’re all just stories - but I think it’s more interesting to start from a darker place and see where that goes.”

This trip through Leenane starts in Mick Dowd’s house, stops in a local cemetery, then goes to a darker place still - we hope you enjoy your stay.

ELLEN MULRONEY (Maryjohnny) comes to the Lantern stage following an extensive tour in Kate Walbert’s dramatic monologue, Year of the Woman, evoking Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress (1916). After its premiere at the Provincetown Fringe Festival, she has performed the piece in a variety of venues. Ellen’s career includes roles in productions in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Philadelphia and Cape Cod. Roles include Amanda in The Glass

Menagerie, Lady Alice More in A Man For All Seasons, Eliza Gant in Look Homeward, Angel, Mother Miriam in Agnes of God, Mrs. Venable in Suddenly, Last Summer, and Margaret in The Perfect Ganesh. STEPHEN NOVELLI (Mick) is delighted to make his first appearance on the Lantern stage. He has been a member of the resident company of artists at The People’s Light & Theatre Company for over 30 years as an actor and director, and currently serves as an Artistic Associate. He most recently played Voltaire in the People’s Light production of Legacy of Light. Other work for Philadelphia stages includes appearances at Arden Theatre Company, Walnut Street Theatre, and

The Wilma Theater where he played The Father in Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice.

WHO’S WHO

MARTIN McDONAGH (Playwright) was born in 1971 to expatriate Irish parents. Raised in London, he often visited his parents’ native Galway, where many of his plays are set. These include The Beauty Queen of Leenane (1996), the first in his highly regarded Connemara Trilogy, which also includes A Skull in Connemara (1997) and The Lonesome West (1997). Other plays include his Aran Islands Trilogy and The Pillowman (2003). One of the most popular contemporary playwrights today, McDonagh is celebrated not only for his aggressive style, but also his keen ear for the language and habits of rural Ireland. “The Ireland I know is more the West,” he explains. “I’ve never been madly keen on Dublin, and whatever you think about the whole Celtic Tiger thing, my natural instinct would be to see the underside of all that - the people who fall through the cracks. None of my plays are especially accurate pictures of the other side either- they’re all just stories - but I think it’s more interesting to start from a darker place and see where that goes.” McDonagh has won numerous awards, including the Evening Standard Award and Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright, and was twice nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. His short film, Six Shooter, won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.

M. CRAIG GETTING (Co-Director) is a Philadelphia-based director and teaching artist. Local directing credits include Act Without Words II, Molloy, Lady with Lapdog (Lantern Theater Company), Really Rosie (Theatre Horizon), and assistant direction with Theatre Horizon, Lantern Theater Company, and PDC. He teaches with the Lantern and Curio Theatre Company, covering everything from basic storytelling to Shakespeare. Craig received his BA in Drama from Kenyon College. Thanks to the Lantern for this opportunity, and to KC and the cast for being such generous collaborators. Much love to his friends and family.

KATHRYN MacMILLAN (Co-Director) This is KC’s tenth season with the Lantern and her second as the Associate Artistic Director. Previously Literary Manager, she is also the founder of the Lantern’s education program, Illumination. Directing for the Lantern: Uncle Vanya, The Breath of Life (seven Barrymore nominations including Outstanding Overall Production of a Play), The Hothouse (Barrymore nods for Direction & Overall Production), The School for Wives, QED, and The Lady from the Sea. Other credits include The Violet Hour and The Laramie Project (Theatre Horizon) and The Miser (Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company). Upcoming: 26 Miles (Flashpoint).

DIRK DUROSSETTE (Scenic Designer) has been designing sets in the Philadelphia area for the past ten years. He has worked for Temple Theaters, Temple Opera Theater, Villanova University, University of the Arts, Rock School, West Chester University, Drexel University, Amaryllis Theatre Company, Act II Playhouse, 1812 Productions, InterAct Theatre Company, Azuka Theatre, Gas and Electric Arts, Luna Theater Company, New City Stage Company, Freedom Theatre, Mum Puppettheatre, Theatre Horizon, Enchantment Theatre Company, and Philadelphia Young Playwrights.

NATALIA de la TORRE (Costume Designer) This is Natalia’s first costume design for Lantern Theater Company, where she also resides as costume shop manager. Past credits: Neighborhood 3 (Azuka); The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Fringe 2010); The Miser (Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company); Purr, Pull, Reign (Johnny Showcase); The Little Dog Laughed (Flashpoint); Scapin (puppet costumes, Lantern); This Is Our Youth (Simpatico); Naked Cocktail and Very Merry Children’s… (both Brat Productions). LARRY D. FOWLER, JR. (Sound Designer) is a Philadelphia-based sound artist who’s designed for many of the area’s thriving theater companies and has performed as a DJ/designer with some of the city’s prominent dance companies. Recent designs include Theatre Horizon’s Spelling Bee, Lantern’s Scapin and The Screwtape Letters, and Simpatico Theatre Project’s Cryptogram. He is currently the sound engineer at Arden Theatre Company. Larry is proud and thankful to be back at the Lantern for A Skull in Connemara.

J. ALEx CORDARO (Fight Director) is thrilled to be working with the Lantern once again. Other Lantern productions include last season’s Henry IV, Part I (Barrymore nomination), Hamlet, Othello, and The Lonesome West. Recent productions include Macbeth at The Wilma Theater and The Duchess of Malfi at Philadelphia Artists Collective. MARLA BURKHOLDER (Dialect Coach) is a Philadelphia-based actor, dialect coach, and teaching artist. She holds an MFA in Acting from Temple University and is certified as an associate instructor of Fitzmaurice Voicework. She has done dialect coaching for People’s Light and Theatre Company, The Wilma Theater, Theatre Exile, and Delaware Theatre Company, among others. Marla is proud to be the Co-Artistic Director of Shakespeare in Clark Park, a theater venture that brings thousands of Philadelphians together to see live Shakespeare in West Philadelphia each summer.

TIM MARTIN (Production Manager & Props Designer) joined the Lantern in the 2009/10 season. He has worked with many companies including Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company, Rebecca Davis Dance Company, Mum Puppettheatre, International Opera Theater, Enchantment Theatre Company, and sundry others. In the academic world, Tim has also worked for Drexel University, The Shipley School, and Swarthmore College. A playwright, several of his plays and adaptations has been seen in the Philadelphia area. He would like to thank this wonderful cast and creative team.

REBECCA SMITH (Stage Manager) is in her third season at the Lantern. She is a graduate of Temple University with a BA in European History and a minor in Theater. She has worked as production manager at Theatre Exile, and as stage manager at Brat Productions, Kaibutsu, and Temple University Theater. Previous Lantern shows include The Hothouse, Sizwe Bansi Is Dead, Hamlet, Happy Days, Scapin, The Breath of Life, Henry IV, Part I, and Uncle Vanya.

CHARLES McMAHON (Artistic Director) co-founded the Lantern and serves as artistic director in addition to acting and directing for the company. Previous roles include Heisenberg in Copenhagen, Lucky in Waiting for Godot, Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Edmund in King Lear, and Pete Seeger in Un-American. Lantern directing credits include Henry IV, Part I, Hamlet, Othello, La Ronde (also translator and adaptor), Richard III (Barrymore Award, Outstanding Production of a Play), Much Ado About Nothing, The Comedy of Errors (Barrymore nomination), King Lear, A Doll’s House, and the upcoming A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Charles is a graduate of NYU’s theater department where he studied acting and directing before returning to Philadelphia.

ANNE SHUFF (Managing Director) is in her second season as Managing Director following seven years of service on the Lantern’s Board of Directors, including four years as Treasurer and three years as Personnel Committee Chair. As founding managing partner of MindLabs.net, she has guided online marketing strategy for theater companies across the country, and her work has been highlighted by WIRED magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia City Paper, and the design reference book Web Site Design Goodies.
