Heartfelt gratitude for a wonderful year of support and dignity for domestic workers.

– With love and warm holiday wishes, the staff of NDWA

Page 3: A Season of Change

Dear Friends,It has been an exceptional year of breakthroughs for domestic workers, the women who do the work that makes all other work possible.

A little more than 6 years ago, the National Domestic Workers Alliance was founded in Atlanta, Georgia by 50 domestic workers and organizers who gathered from six cities to support and learn from one another. Since that time, our movement has grown tremendously. Today we represent 44 affiliate organizations in 28 cities and are leading campaigns on everything from immigration reform to long-term care.

I’m so proud to say that after many years of local, state and national organizing, domestic workers have captured the imagination of people around the country. Seven states introduced domestic workers legislation this year. This year alone, we passed state legislation in two states—in the Aloha state, Hawai’i, and after 7 years we finally have an historic win in California!

In September, the Department of Labor finalized a regulatory change that will bring 1.8 million home care workers and caregivers under the protection of the Fair Labor Standards Act, after 75 years of exclusion. We were so proud to be a part of the phenomenal coalition that moved this change forward.

And our movement is breaking through globally. This year, together with domestic worker representatives from 47 countries, we were part of creating the first global federation of domestic workers —The International Domestic Workers Federation. Founded in Montevideo Uruguay, the IDWF is the first global federation of women workers.

This is just the beginning. We believe a tide is turning and working women will define the next generation of social change work. We look forward to continuing to build the momentum with you.

Here’s to celebrating many more victories together. Thank you!

With love, Ai-jen Poo
