Sapelo Island Information

Sapelo Island is steeped in the history that parallels its ownership. Early Guale

Indian Native American settlements are scattered across the island, and Span-ish, English and French occupation each succeeded one another until Thomas Spald-ing purchased a portion of the island and

built what is now Reynolds Mansion. Tales

of pirate treasure and Civil War battles,

of the glorious old South and the indus-trial magnates that came to end seclusion

and serenity are woven into the story of Sapelo Island. Charles Lindbergh took off

from its shores, and American presidents from Coolidge to Carter have walked the Sapelo beaches. The lush forest and vast beaches surround guests in a sea of green

almost year round, and exploring the is-land’s 11-mile length and four-mile width

is certain to produce sightings of white-tail deer, raccoon, opossum, wild turkey armadillo and other animals. Sapelo is also a birders paradise, with many dif-ferent shorebird and indigenous species calling the island home permanently or seasonally.

Hog Hammock Information

The only private parcel of land is the tiny island community of Hog Hammock, populated primarily by descendants of West Africa. With its dirt roads and tin-roofed houses, Hog Ham-mock is the site of a social hall, two histor-ic Baptist churches, and a former schoolhouse, all built by descendants of slaves. The nearby Behavior Cemetery has burial sites that date back 200 years. The Geechee/Gullah people still maintain many elements of the unique West African culture, language, and traditions such as basket weaving and netmaking. A small general store comprises the business community of Hog Ham mock and the local residents will be glad to see you during your visit. While visiting Hog Hammock, it will be an honor for you to meet Cornelia Walker Bailey, a lifelong resident and author of “God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolita Man”.

Transporation Information:

Vehicles may be included with your

lodging in Hog Hammock. Transporta-

tion can be arranged for scheduled

bikes, or walk. You are welcome to

hang out at the Mansion or use the

game room at any time throughout the

weekend. The Reynolds Mansion can be

reached at 912-485-2299.
