Q. What about interlibrary loans?A. Institutions October use hard copies derived directly or indirectly from the electronic edition of the publications for the purpose of inter-library loan with the same limitations that apply to paper copies for that purpose made from the print edition of the journals. Specifically, copies must be made in compliance with Section 108 of the Copyright Act of the USA and Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works (CONTU Guidelines), the text of which is available as part of USA Copyright Office Circular 21. The electronic transmission of copies of articles for inter-library loan purposes is not allowed.

Current IDS Availability Server

• The Good– Allows for searching of all Project libraries from

within ILLiad– Shows holdings information for each library– Has licensing information for each publisher– Is currently the only way to access this type of

information– No member work to update the ejournal database

• The Bad– A lot of work to update licenses – currently an

annual process– No one is really happy with the solution – it’s

clunky – Staff time – staff needs to check 866 fields for

each publisher’s holdings and licensing information

• The Bad, continued…– Lender strings and workforms need to be

generated manually (memorize 5 three letter symbols)

– Adds steps to borrowing process instead of eliminating them

– Does not use ejournal url that is in the Serials Solutions data

These are the lending problems:• No url in ILLiad so staff need to search for article• PDF conversion adds a few steps. We need to be able to import pdf’s directly into ILLiad.

But…• No need to go to the stacks and search for the volume• No need to scan or photocopy – already have a perfect digital version

• Take ALIAS Open Source– Have a web based service (Jake) that will allow other libraries to update the licensing

information– Cufts?– Other libraries and consortia will gain the benefits of the system while helping to

improve the system– Work with NISO (SERU) to adapt ALIAS to use their license formats
