Church Plaza Tree Removal Notice Due to safety issues and to prevent further damage to the sewage and water system pipes from the tree’s roots, the Magnolia Tree closest to Our Lady of Guadalupe Statue near the stairs leading down to the Rectory was removed on August 1st.

Backyard Theology Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make this year’s Backyard Theology another success, especially Kay Kenson who continued to organize this event while recovering at Lake Forest Nursing Center. Through your involvement, many people have been enriched both spiritually and socially. A special thank you to all who attended the sessions. We hope you have gained a new insight to many topics. We are looking forward to seeing you again next year!

Eagle Scout Service Project Fundraiser August 13th and 14th

Joel Kattapuram, a long-time altar server and a Boy Scout from Troop 604, is fundraising for his Eagle Scout Service Project. The project is landscaping a 2,000 square foot area across from the Rectory here at the church. This includes removing some of the existing ground cover, replanting with

drought tolerant and native plants, and installing additional drip irrigation system. Joel will be in the plaza on August 13th and 14th after all Masses trying to raise funds for his project. Any extra funds collected will be donated to the church.

Thank you for your support and God bless!

Summer Yoga Class Hiatus Due to a large drop in attendance this summer, most likely because of families summer vacation schedules, Meleena’s 9:15am to 10:15am Monday Yoga Class will be taking a break as well. Classes will resume on Monday, September 12th. To contact Meleena, please email [email protected].

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Between 9am Monday, July 25th and 8am Monday, August 1st, the parish was robbed of the candle offertory money from the locked boxes on the front of each of the candle stands. We need you to be aware since each week in those donation boxes there are usually a few personal checks made out to the church. If you lit a candle last week and wrote a check for your donation and dropped it into the box, you may wish to put a stop payment on your check to prevent further fraud. Furthermore, if you find that your check was cashed, or if you were in the church and witnessed any suspicious activity near the candle stands, please immediately call the Parish Business Manager, Shirley Burgos, at 949-951-8599 ext. 224 or email her at [email protected]. We are changing our policy and will be randomly collecting those donations to prevent future incidents.

Message From Music Ministry My dear parish family, as many of our music ministers take July and August off to refresh and renew themselves, I’d like to take this opportunity to speak to your hearts. We are always in need of growing our music ministry family. Each year, we

gain some wonderful members and we also lose some treasured members. I would like to reach out to you to ask you to search your heart and see if God is calling you to join our music family. We are in need of new friends to join us; especially our adult choir and our youth band, Kyrie. If you’ve been thinking about it for a while, or if this is the first time you’re giving it a thought, now is the time to respond to that call because we need you!

Please contact Vanessa Brockman in the Music Ministry Office at 949-951-8599 ext. 229 or email:

[email protected]. Also, our Children’s Choir, for ages 6 to 13, will have their first rehearsal on Wednesday, October 5th at 6pm.

We are looking for someone in the parish who has a special talent that would like to share their gift with our participants one evening (i.e. ceramics, story telling, dance, exercise, arts and crafts, etc.). Contact Kathleen Collins at 949-230-4424 or Dottie Gannon at 949-689-3020. If you know of anyone who would like to be part of this ministry, please call us. Thank you for your support and prayers.

2016-17 Registration Important Message from Faith Formation:

Religious Education sign-ups continue through July 31. In August, children go on a “wait list” for space available. Please sign up this month! Did You Know classes are offered for all children 1st thru 8th grades, even those who have already made their First Communion?

Parents and Grandparents: Please encourage student participation every year. To carry on Jesus’ Message of Love--so needed in our world today-- we seek several more teachers of faith on Mondays, plus a special person with a passion for the Old Testament on Wednesday evenings. Please pray with me for a great response. For more information, contact Gloria Fetta at 949-951-8599 ext.230.

Thank You for a Great VBS Week! Thank you Gloria Fetta and Suzanne Loberg for organizing and providing another fun and faith filled week for our children. Thank you to all of the volunteers, adult and youth. We hope

this week touched all of your hearts as you lit the way for our children on their Cave Quest, following Jesus the Light of the World! Thank you parents for bringing your children and encouraging their experience, and thank you to all of the parishioners who donated items that made this week successful.

Teachers and Aides Needed for Religious Education Classes

Is God calling you to teach or aide in Faith Formation? If you are hearing that tiny whisper saying, “You can do it, you can do it!” like I did so many years ago, then maybe God is nudging you to find out about our Religious Education program for children. This summer is a perfect time to come in and chat with me to discover how you can become a perfect fit into our on-going Faith Formation program for children. ~ Gloria Fetta, 949-951-8599 ext. 230 or [email protected]

RCIA/RICA Registration As the Church liturgical year trends to study and reflection, we, the Santiago faith community, once again prepare for those who seek knowledge and information about our Catholic Christian tradition.

The process of welcome and education in the Catholic Christian tradition is called the Order of the Catechumenate. The Order of the Catechumenate dates to the days immediately after the death of Christ. It’s a process whereby unbaptized and those baptized in another Christian tradition come to know, understand and embrace the Catholic faith. Many know and recognize this process as the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). Are you aware we also have an adapted RCIA program for children grades 1 through 12? We offer the adult process in either English or Spanish and the Children’s process is bi-lingual.

Registration forms for Adults and Children are available in the Parish Office or through the parish

website: www.sdccatholic.org. Call the Office of Catechumenate for additional information at 949-951-8599 ext. 231

Be Not Deceived Do not be disturbed by the clamor of this world, which passes like a shadow. Do not let the false delights of a deceptive world deceive you. —St. Clare

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2016

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday’s “Parable of the rich fool” delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing—now: “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to find. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also filled with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus’ warning not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally! But what changes do I need to make, right now, so that the many people outside “the Master’s house” will want to come inside to experience the healing comfort of Jesus’ own mercy in the compassion of Jesus’ modern-day disciples? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
