IN MEMORIAM

Judge W. Don Reader passed away on February 5, 2016. It was a sad day for hundreds of attorneys who practiced before him and thousands of families that benefited from his rulings. While we respect and honor other judges for their work, Judge Reader was much more to many of us. He was our mentor, our friend, our rock. We loved him and will sincerely miss him.

THE EVOLVING COURTS

Courts are evolving. We are evolving into a kind of social service provider. We now have veteran’s courts, mental health courts, drug courts, DWI courts, DUS courts and who knows what is coming next. Most of these “courts” were created to treat a societal problem, largely ignored by society, the legislature and the executive branches of government.

The United States has, in large part, criminalized mental illness and drug addiction. The courts have heroically stepped up to fill the void, but our resources are limited and ethical questions abound.

The U. S. Senate recently passed a bill that would improve access to mental health services for those in the criminal justice system that need treatment. It was sponsored by Sen. Al Frannken from Minnesota. You remember Al. The comedian turned U. S. Senator. He always played the dumb guy. Apparently, he is trying to change his image. Anyway, his bill would provide 18 million dollars a year, for four years to help collaborate treatment for mental health as well as veteran’s services and substance abuse systems. The old phrase “a drop in the bucket” comes to mind. While

the dollars are not nearly enough, any legislative acknowledgment of the problem is sincerely appreciated. Now all we need are solutions.

THIS AND THAT

Welcome to Lori Arnold, the newest member of our SCBA staff. She is our new bookkeeper and replaces Sarah, who left for greener pastures. You will notice Lori

immediately as her smile lights up any room.

The Law, Love & Chocolate event was a smashing success. Thanks again to Lisa Williams, Nicole Richard and each member of the Community Involvement Committee for their hard work. The food was excellent and plentiful. The people’s choice award went to a peanut butter chocolate cream pie, prepared by Baker’s Cafe. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the rebuild to sample it again. Best wishes to Baker’s, as they work through this tragedy and remember to support them when they return.

The major theme for the 2016 ABA midyear meeting is diversity and inclusion. At the annual meeting I attended last year, we had women’s bar associations, black women’s bar associations, Asian bar associations, etc., etc. I understand that each group faces unique issues within our profession, but shouldn’t we be working these out together? I looked long and hard for an Italian bar association, but couldn’t find one. I guess that means we are now “included.” It wasn’t always that way.

.

"Like Us" On Facebook!

You now have an opportunity to follow the Bar Association on Facebook! We are looking forward to using this tool as yet another way to communicate with our members and legal community. If you are a current Facebook user and have not signed up to follow the Stark County Bar Association, please take the time to check it out and “Like” us.

Why did you join the Stark County Bar Association?I wanted to get involved with the profession and community right away, and the Bar seemed like a great place to start.

What practice areas interest you the most? General business litigation is my primary focus at the moment, and fortunately it’s been very interesting. I also really enjoy corporate law – especially as it relates to shareholder disputes, fi duciary duties, etc.

Who are some of your heroes in the legal profession? Both Justice Scalia and Justice Breyer have to be pretty high on the list. Although they were polar opposites, their constant back and forth forced both of them -- and in turn everyone else -- to more clearly defi ne and defend their respective judicial philosophies.

What was your most rewarding experience during law school?Probably serving as President of the Student Bar Association. The SBA had a hand in just about everything, so it made for a ton of responsibility. It really helped leadership and time management skills, among other things. There’s nothing like having 500+ people with type-a personalities analyze your every decision.

What has been your most rewarding or memorable experience while practicing law?Having the opportunity to really get to know clients. When you really know the person you’re going to bat for, it just makes everything that much more rewarding.

What groups or activities are you involved in outside of work? I was born and raised on Cleveland sports and Ohio State football, so watching and/or commiserating over those teams takes up plenty of time. Beyond that, I’m a pretty big movie guy and I try to play pick-up basketball as often as possible.

What is your favorite legally-related movie or book?A Few Good Men

What motto will shape/has shaped your legal career?Excellence is the gradual result of always wanting to be better.

Are you a stark county native? Not Stark County, but I grew up nearby in Green, Ohio, so I’ve spent plenty of time in the Akron-Canton area.

New Member Spotlight: Matt Doney, Esq.

What is your favorite place to spend an evening in Stark County? Recently I had my fi rst trip to Gervasi. Great atmosphere – I’m looking forward to going back.

If the SCBA gave you a blank check to plan a bar outing, what would it be?

Probably tailgating and attending an Ohio State or Browns game. Both are a terrifi c time – the results tend to be better for one of the teams, though.

If you could work for any client today, who would it be and why?Tesla. Some pretty interesting legal work must follow all the innovative things they’re doing.

If you could clerk for any U.S. Supreme Court Justice in history, who would it be and why? Justice Scalia. Generally, I either strongly agree or disagree with his opinions, so the opportunity to go back and forth on this or that point would be pretty incredible. That, and he could make an opinion on railroad taxation read like a Harry Potter book.

Kent State University Paralegal Studies Advisory Board.

Did this passion guide you to your present position as Director of Stark County Honor Court (A Veterans Treatment Court)?Actually, it was my role in helping to start the Honor Court Program that showed me that our Veterans returning home need help and many fi nd themselves involved in

the criminal justice system. Veterans Treatment Courts guided me to help Stark County Veterans and continue to educate our community and state by actively speaking at the Ohio State Bar Association, Ohio Attorney General’s Offi ce, Ohio Reentry panels and CLE’s about the benefi ts of Veterans Treatment Courts.

What are the time commitments and what advice would you give to others wishing to get involved in the community? Most of the committees that I participate on consist of monthly meetings with a lot of follow-up and networking. However, I do enjoy it very much. I would encourage others to get involved in not just helping within your community, but to fi nd something you are really passionate about so that when it gets stressful and busy it is still enjoyable! I would also encourage people to fi nd a mentor to help them fi nd what it is they are passionate about, act as a sounding board, and open doors to opportunities that are diffi cult to obtain.

Has your service enhanced your career?Absolutely! Just in the networking alone I have made many valuable resources and contacts that I will utilize throughout my career, not to mention the wonderful friends that I have made! Involving myself with the local Veteran organizations has really helped me to be a more effective director to Honor Court and the Veterans it serves.

Thank you, Lisa, for all you do!

What social causes are you passionate about?I enjoy helping others and participating in community events and programs that align with my interests as well as what best supports my community in a positive way. I am especially passionate about helping Veterans and fi nd it to be the most rewarding thing I have ever been involved in. I actively participate on several boards and committees to keep myself informed of current issues and growing concerns in my community: Ohio Attorney General’s Criminal Justice and Mental Health Task Force Subcommittee on Veterans Treatment Courts; Rebuilding Together Northeast Ohio Stark Advisory Council—Serving Veterans; Stark County Veterans Task Force--Homeless Veterans Initiative; Stark County Bar Association Military Affairs Committee; V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 1036; Stark County Bar Association Community Involvement Committee and Law, Love & Chocolate Co-Chair;

Pinterest was launched six years ago, in March of 2010, as a collective “digital scrapbook” of shared online content and quickly became a mecca for hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts. The site gave users a unique platform to “pin” or post imag-es to virtual, themed bulletin boards from anywhere around the Web and engage with other pinners, as well as their posted content. While recipes, fitness tips, and wedding planning ideas remain popular staples of Pinterest, the site has evolved significantly into not only an inspirational and social outlet, but also an educational and business marketing resource.1 With over 50 million registered users in the US, statistics released by Pinterest in late 2015 demonstrate that two thirds of pinned content comes from business websites or blogs, indicating professional use is growing, as well as the popularity of business-related content.2 This article will ex-plore a variety of examples how attorneys can utilize Pinter-est in a professional context to grow their network, gain knowledge, and market themselves to prospective clients.

Visual Learning Pinterest is the ideal platform for sharing and discovering infographics, and there are plenty on the site to explore. Aside from the usual guides on how to can vegetables and make homemade laundry detergent, a number of profes-sional legal organizations and law libraries (like LexisNexis and the Oklahoma City University School of Law Library, to name a few) pin insightful infographics that condense practice management concepts and legal research topics into convenient, visual how-to resources, tackling things like launching a business app and various workers’ compensa-tion statistics.3

Information Gathering By 2018, Pinterest is projected to triple its global user base to over 300 million, matching the pace of Twitter and surpas-sing Facebook’s rate of new user registrations.4 This is good

news for attorneys who use social media to research potential jurors, as Pinterest can reveal clues about an individual’s per-sonality, interests, and potential biases that may not be evi-dent elsewhere online.5 Likewise, as more businesses estab-lish an online presence, corporate counsel may also find Pin-terest to be a useful tool in monitoring a company’s brand and intellectual property.6 Networking Sharing common interests is one of the fundamentals of Pinterest, and developing creative pinboard themes that speak to a particular area of legal expertise can be a fun way to engage with colleagues, potential clients, and other attor-neys in similar practice areas. An attorney representing small business owners might create a pinboard of inexpensive of-fice supplies, for instance. Liking and repining other users’ content and following specific users are other easy ways to start establishing personal connections.7, 8 Marketing Opportunities Pinterest started distinguishing between personal and busi-ness accounts in 2012 and later introduced several new fea-tures, including built-in analytics, promoted pins (adver-tisements), and “rich” pins (containing interactive content) specifically designed to make marketing on the platform easier.9 However, experts agree that marketing efforts on Pinterest are most effective for attorneys and firms who serve specific segments of the general public that typically use Pinterest, like families, couples, small business owners, etc. Success-ful Pinterest marketing campaigns often use relevant content that is both appealing and useful (like infographics demysti-fying legal jargon, book recommendations, or even inspira-tional quotes) to attract these target audiences.10 Nonetheless, any visibility on Pinterest can be beneficial when it comes to brand control, establishing a reputation, and attracting a younger gener-ation of clients who tend to rely heavily on the internet and social media to find service providers.11
